African Heritage Day At Band On The Wall, Manchester

African Heritage Day at Band on the Wall, Manchester Sunday 22nd September Sosoe's kitchen and Phill Morgan (Mr Savana) present a celebration of African Heritage Day, a reminder that the struggles against injustice and inequities of the past are part of our identity and culture. Expect an engaging, welcoming, informative and enjoyable day for the whole family, packed full of African food, music, culture and entertainment. Traditional African dress is encouraged! When our first democratically-elected governments decided to make Heritage Day one of our national days, we did so because we knew that our rich and varied cultural heritage has the profound power to help build our new nation. Africa is a rainbow continent where creative expression flourishes, and its endless cultural diversity is embodied through traditional and modern interpretation of song, dance, theatre, designs, fashion and food. If indeed our continent is, through our children, to rise from the ashes of division and conflict we have to acknowledge, appreciate and celebrate who we are. ==== FOOD AND DRINK ==== Open from 5pm on gig nights, our bar is the perfect pre-show meeting place. Every gig night we serve up a range of freshly-prepared pizza, bar snacks, over 50 speciality gins with paired tonic waters, beers, wines, fine spirits and more. Get down early and sample our delicious food and renowned gin menu. ==== HAPPY HOUR ==== Sun-Fri 5-7pm / Sat 12pm-7pm Pint Carlsberg Pilsner £3 Bottle House Wine £12 Prosecco £15 Two Cocktails 12 House doubles £5 Pizza & Pint/Soft Drink £9 Two Pizzas & Bottle House Wine £20

Studio Ghibli Special: The Red Turtle + Spirited Away

Above The Line presents: Spirited Away + The Red Turtle Were taking over the basement for YES Fam this September and bringing you two of our favourite and most pertinent Studio Ghibli films, Michal Dudok de Wits The Red Turtle and Hayao Miyazakis iconic Spirited Away. 12.20pm: The Red Turtle (2016) (PG) (Director: Michal Dudok de Wit) The minimalist masterpiece, The Red Turtle, is the first non-Japanese film to be produced by Studio Ghibli. The story follows an exploration of existentialism, hope and humanitys relationship with the natural world through the story of a man shipwrecked on a desert island and his encounter with a red turtle washed up ashore. The film is a beautiful visual experience and a storytelling triumph worthy of the greatest of fables. 14.10pm: Spirited Away (2001) (PG) (Director: Hayao Miyazaki) Miyazakis fantasy epic follows the story of 10-year-old Chihiro as her family stumble across an abandoned theme park, plummeting her into a world ruled by gods, witches, and spirits, and where humans are changed into beasts. Spirited Away is Studio Ghiblis finest and most recognisable production, changing the course of Japanese animation and garnering critical acclaim on an international scale. FREE ENTRY

Partisans // The Whiskey Jar

Since their formation in 1996 Partisans have been thrilling audiences the world over with their ferociously energetic performances of tightly knit themes, with great freedom coming from their years of playing together. Hailed as breaking ground for the new wave of British jazz in the late 1990s and described by BBC Radio\'s Jazz on 3 as \'One of the most exciting all star experimental groups in Jazz today\', Partisans is co-led by two of the preeminent musicians of their generation, Phil Robson (guitars) and Julian Siegel (tenor sax & bass clarinet), alongside the mighty partnership of Thaddeus Kelly (bass) and Gene Calderazzo (drums). Partisans are a real band known for bridging the gap between New York Swing, European Improv and UK Rock, developing a distinctive sound of its own wherein the combination of each members influences feeds a genuine creative spark generating huge excitement and energy. Watch/Listen: https://youtu.be/12lEz5ew4yE https://partisansjazz.bandcamp.com/album/nit-de-nit This tour promotes Partisans\' latest album, \'Nit de Nit\', the band\'s first live album (recorded at The Vortex, via Whirlwind Recordings), released to critical acclaim in May 2019. "This is compelling music, and some of the very best to be heard anywhere on the planet." All About Jazz Julian Siegel // Tenor Sax & Bass Clarinet Phil Robson // Guitars Thaddeus Kelly // Bass Gene Calderazzo // Drums Partisans present some of the most refreshing music I\'ve heard in a long while, uncompromising, very well written and very well played. It demands serious attention. I hear in these players a sense of common purpose and resolve, and a strong command of a dialect uniquely suited to this music. It\'s heartening to hear music that looks to find its own particular place. Steve Swallow. Doors 8 // Live Music 8.30 // Entry just 8/5 students

Big Zuu Live At Soup Kitchen

Robomagic Live presents Big Zuu + DJ Jampack + special guests On sale Fri 10am via DICE Big Zuu may have titled this release We Will Walk, but the momentum behind him approaching summer 19 is more of a sprint pace. Content With Content, his scintillating debut mixtape, dropped late last year to strong reviews, praised for its ferocious flows (The Guardian) and top tier bars, holding his own against mainstays of grime (Trench). His collaborators include JME, P Money and Craig David. BBC 1Xtra gave him a residency thats become unmissable radio. And thanks to a searing viral freestyle about his communitys regret and rage over the 2017 Grenfell disaster, the tower block fire that claimed at least 72 lives in 2017, he arrives at We Will Walk with a reputation for fearless truth-telling: an artist unafraid to speak up for his ends.
