Way Down Wanderers / Wed 8 April / Night & Day

DHP Family present The Way Down Wanderers On Sale 9am Friday 6th December // Info: https://tinyurl.com/NaDWDW2020 Combining elements of alternative folk, newgrass, rock, pop, and more, The Way Down Wanderers take the time-tested roots formula and dare to add their own unique ingredients and shake it up a bit. As a result, we get a refreshing contemporary take on an esteemed vintage sound, [with] polished, quality songs and an organic sound made up of lush strings, excellent picking, strong bass, tight drumming, and trade-off vocals that transition easily from grounded to soaring No Depression The Way Down Wanderers are from the very heartland of America central Illinois, Peoria, to be exact which is reflected in their distinctive sound, which draws on elements of bluegrass, but also touches on classic rock influences including the multi-part harmonies of the Beach Boys and The Bands hybrid soul, as well as the roots qualities of The Avett Brothers and Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, with surprising elements of jazz, classical music and even hip-hop. Often referred to by fans as one of the hardest-working, hardest-touring bands on the circuit today, the 5-piece Illinois-based act not only proves that classification with their jam-packed tour schedule but also on stage every night, with youthful exuberance and a lively stage show, and totally infectious. High energy percussion, mandolin, guitar, bass, banjo and fiddle weave seamlessly together to create an experience for fans that has sold out shows across the UK and the United States, filling the front rows with fans not just singing along to one tune, but singing along to all of them. Everybody says it. Wed be nothing without our supporters. Yeah, they buy tickets and of course we love that, but when weve been on the road for 10 hours and walk onto a stage road weary and we see familiar faces singing along, its hard to describe. Its everything, really. Theres a whole lot of love there. Music enthusiasts are not the only ones taking note. Critics and tastemakers alike have awarded the young artists an impressive number of accolades ranging from official showcases at AmericanaFest (2018) and International Bluegrass Music Association (2016) to Whitstable UK Session of the Year (2017), a BBC Scotland Session (2017) as well as Finalist, International Song Writing Competition (2015 & 2016), Chicagos Best Emerging Artist, Deli Magazine (2014) and Songpickrs Best Songs Spotify Playlist (2016) among others. The young men are no strangers to the festival circuit either, having played major National and Regional Festivals such as Merlefest, Summer Camp, Red Wing Roots Music Festival and Saskatchewan Jazz Fest all across the United States, Canada and the UK. The band has also graced the stage of coveted venues such as Bluegrass Underground (TN), The Fox Theater (CO), Park West (IL), The Vogue (IN) The Station Inn (TN) The Ark (MI), and countless others. Their acclaimed live shows are truly unique, communal experiences with acoustic encores taking place out in the audience and drummer Merikoskis famous spoon solos! Come and see why theyre one of the hottest new Roots acts out of the USA! The Way Down Wanderers intricate, hypnotic rhythms call to mind Bittersweet Symphony more than bluegrass traditional Rolling Stone Country Somewhere on the spectrum between Old Crow Medicine Show and Mumford and Sons lies the spirited bluegrass-based artistry of The Way Down Wanderers. It is joyful, daring and occasionally sublime Associated Press In addition to songwriting skills wholly impressive for their youth, and their equally admirable musicianship, there is a charisma in their sound accompanied by a positivity that proves infectious No Depression The Way Down Wanderers is a group who demonstrates its arrived with firm mastery of its own vision on the bands sophomore release, illusions Pop Matters Infectious there is an energy in this music that brings a smile AmericanaUK We are really liking this Ricky Ross Deacon Blue / BBC Radio Scotland The best new discovery Philadelphia Folk Festival 2019 #1 of 10 New Artists You Need To Know in 2019 Rolling Stone https://thewaydownwanderers.com

Hes a busy man, running his label Menagerie - featuring some of the countries most forward thinking DJs and live acts - alongside being in the genre-spanning band A Broken Camarilla and producing independently as Tommy Tickle, as his darker alias Meles Meles, and other collaborations such as with Silent K and Joey Bricks. LDOT b2b MUZZY Both revered selectors, playing out across multiple genres up and down the UK, they have often shared lineups - this is the first-ever time they will play back to back. Having spent 2019 being booked in places as far out as Val Thorens, Muzzy will be making his Manchester debut. Ldot, holding down a residency on online radio station Underground Kollektiv, will be joining him behind the decks to launch North Report. MILDRED Boasting a selection rich in house, garage and techno; there is rarely a week where MilDred isnt causing damage on dancefloors. This will be her Manchester debut - expect the same euphoric selection she is known for in other cities.

Geno Washington & The Ram Jam Band

GENO! After the raging success of the last show we are bringing back Geno and his spectacular band to the Twisted Wheel Club, a tradition that stretches way back to the early 60's! Ourselves and Pete Roberts have just about recovered from the last Geno show, and after the wonderful evening with PP ARNOLD and the almost sold out SMALL FAKERS show in February we thought we better keep the hot streak going. Amazing Support acts TBA shortly and The Wheel DJ's will be spinning records well into the early hours after the show. Get your tickets nice and early! Geno originates from Evansville in Indiana, USA and first came to England in the 1960\'s as part of the US Air Force. His love of Blues and Soul music led him to team up with some of London's hottest musicians and Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band very quickly became established asthe most exciting live band in Britain. His live shows were immortalised in two of the biggest selling albums ofthe 60s - "Hand Clappin' Foot Stompin' Funky Butt Live" and "Hipsters Flipsters and Finger Poppin' Daddies". His status as the undisputed "King of Soul" was cemented forever by Kevin Rowland and Dexy's Midnight Runners in the 1980s with the World-wide No.1 smash hit single "Geno". Ultrasound In Manchester : Deaf Institute Wed 15 April

Ultrasound : A band. Not any band, a band emitting a swaggeringly ambitious whirlpool of Sui Generis. One part audacity, one part a call to arms and of course one part cherry lipstick. Pucker up people. PR humans have sought to define the band and fallen short as journo perplexity saw them reference post-Britpop, prog, glam and punk but Ultrasound will always bewilder and confound as they surf the chromatic spectrum. Factoid number one is that the band initially came together in London during the Summer of Britpop, after meeting at College in the North of England. After releasing their first single on legendary indie Fierce Panda they became the "victims" of music industry buzz, culminating in them signing to Nude records, and releasing their double album Everything Picture. The sheer ambition of releasing a double album as their debut confused the hacks but with support from the Nude gang, the album won hearts and minds and reached number 17 in the charts (thats factoid no.2 folks). With public and press recognition they made appearances at all the major festivals and played a slot on "Later with Jools Holland" look it up on YouTube folks. Having accomplished all they set out to achieve the band went their separate ways for TEN years and allowed the legend to simmer. Over the course of time, Everything Picture grew in popularity and the anthems Same Band, Fame Thing and Floodlit World began to be recognised as lost classics. Upon hearing that Tim Smith of the Cardiacs was ill, Ultrasound decided to reform for a benefit gig and discovered that the world seemed to have caught up with their music, and their debut album was starting to be regarded as a cult classic of the 90s. Since then they have recorded two highly regarded albums "Play For Today" (2012) and "Real Britannia" (2017), and toured several times headlining their own sell out shows. Having bought up the rights to their first album, the record label One Little Indian have decided to commemorate its 21st anniversary by re-issuing it along with many exciting extras, and to coincide the band will be playing live in 2020. Preacher Lawson Plus Special Guests

Preacher Lawson was born In Portland, Oregon, but raised most of his adolescence in Memphis, TN. He moved 20 times before the age of 10, but if you asked him what city he\'s from he\'d say Orlando, FL. Because that\'s where he grew as a comedian. He started writing jokes when he was 16, then decided to perform for the first time a year later on a bet with his mother. Best decision of his life. In 2015 Preacher won the title of Funniest Comedian In Florida, in 2016 he was crowned the winner of the Seattle International Comedy Competition. He\'s continued the wave of momentum on into 2017 and he\'s on quite a roll this year so far - having made his television debut on NBC\'s "Last Call with Carson Daly" followed by an appearance on Comedy Dynamic\'s "Coming To The Stage" soon after. In 2017, Lawson made a big splash on NBC\'s "America\'s Got Talent" where he made it to the final ten contestants. Preacher can currently be seen on America\'s Got Talent: The Champions where he was a top 5 finalist on NBC highest-rated season to date. // Doors 19.15pm // Performance 8pm

Ron Pope | Manchester

Bone Structure is not the album that Ron Pope set out to release. While parenthood has a way of softening hard exteriors and forcing more than a few lifestyle changes, Pope found himself almost unrecognizable after becoming a father in early 2018. Before hed gathered his footing in this extraordinary new reality, a jarring incident on tour forced him to reckon with his own mortality and consider what it would mean for his newborn daughter if he were to die. Within a few months, hed effectively shredded his notebook, tossing aside an albums worth of recording sessions, no longer satisfied with generalizations and lyrics light on context. Fresh notebook in hand, a deluge of deeply personal reflections on his own life poured through his pen. A change of heart? Navigating a sea change is more apropos. Pope found renewed purpose in writing songs to explain his perspective on the world to his daughter as if he were whispering his secrets to her from the other side. This is the crucible in which Bone Structure was forged. The first utterance on the album, flesh of my flesh, blood of my blood, the only part of me Ive ever loved can seem like a shocking departure for fans that know Ron as a self-assured, confident narrator. Bone Structure finds Pope on a new path, examining everything he knew about life and more so, what he didnt know. Popes own parents were barely nineteen when he came along; he was a child in the care of children. As a boy, he felt saddled with responsibility and adult worries; his formative years were spent watching family members fall victim to drug addiction, mental illness, and death by misadventure. Resentful of the baggage that was heaped upon him, Pope began to rebel against anything resembling responsibility. Letting go of the idea of marriage and children early on in his journey allowed him to survive along the margins and exist in a construct of how he felt musicians were supposed to live. He turned to alcohol in his teen years, often stashing empty liquor bottles under his twin bed, next to baseball gloves and old copies of MAD Magazine. His ability to function normally at school created a glossy veneer, masking inner demons and buried trauma. With his emotions dulled but still buzzing, he began scratching out poems in an intuitive effort to uncover how he truly felt about the world and what his place was within it. He rumbled into his twenties fixated on oblivion, pinballing around America in search of words that always seemed just one more exit down the highway. Poems eventually turned into songs, which led him to chase the muse from Georgia to New York City. It was there in Gotham that he stumbled upon the first inkling of a change of course - this is where he fell in love with his wife, Blair. While both rebelled against the idea of any sort of permanent partnership, they eventually gave into what felt blindingly obvious. Two years into their partnership, his nagging obsession with freedom caused Pope to blow up the life they had built together, putting him squarely back at the place he started - alone. The half-year that they spent apart was a dark time for him - not only mentally, but also creatively. While he had once again achieved a sort of freedom from responsibility, the framework of his life had corroded beneath his feet; he was back on a vision quest, forever in search of some kind of truth that he couldnt define. For a long time, I broke my own heart living like I didnt need anyone. Somewhere inside, I knew that what I really wanted was to build a less volatile life for myself than the one Id been born into. As clich as it seems, all I wanted was to be happy; I just didnt know how. Eventually, he and Blair found their way back to each other and knew that this time, they were playing for keeps. In a massive leap of faith, Blair left corporate America behind and became Popes manager. They gave up their laughably tiny New York apartment for a life on the road, fully supported by Popes music. Not being constrained by a label or publisher allowed them to grow a business together on their own terms. Brooklyn Basement Records was born from this partnership; the pair are devoted to shepherding both emerging and established artists through the shark infested waters of the music industry. Five years into their adventure on the road, Blair became pregnant and the duo decided to settle in Nashville. Rather than causing those old feelings of unrest to creep back in, this new family life fostered a heightened sense of belonging in Pope and for once, he felt truly at home. The intense feeling of purpose provided by the birth of their daughter shined a light into the darkest crevices of his mind. The fact that this was the first time in his black and white life that things truly burned in Technicolor made Popes brush with extinction all the more striking. It was with this gut punch of inclusion and with the echoes of abject terror still ringing in his ears that Pope began re-writing the record. While some songs speak directly to his daughter, others illuminate long buried recollections in an attempt to exhume the life lessons that were interred alongside the memories themselves. The albums title track, Bone Structure, is a cinematic epic that drops the listener squarely into the springtime of Popes own New York City fever dream, as he recalls coming face to face with the reality that love and lust are not always one and the same. Practice What I Preach finds Pope on the precipice of his daughters birth recounting all of the ways he is not yet qualified to raise a child while also trying to parcel out any wisdom he may have to offer, along with a greasy side of Memphis horns. In the hauntingly sparse Wait and See Popes trembling voice asks himself, the listener or the universe at large Was I chased all this way by my chemistry? What will become of me? Even with songs that are deeply meaningful and introspective, Bone Structures overall impact is still optimistic and heartening. Using production elements that are at once directly tied to his Southern roots and somehow also push the boundaries of Americana have allowed Pope to create something that feels rooted in history while still absolutely vibrant and of-the-moment. Taken as a whole, Bone Structure is the stunning account of a life spent searching; it ebbs and flows, breathing deeply, weighted by narrative accounts of harrowing experiences while also reveling in the remembrances of an unselfconscious joy that one can only know when their past is considerably shorter than their future. These recordings, while ultimately personal to Pope and his family, are universal in their themes. Writing these songs reminded me of where Ive been and how hard it was to claw my way out of that pit of my own creation, he says. I dont miss who I used to be; that version of me was constantly on guard, willing to do absolutely anything to keep himself unburdened by the weight of other people\'s needs. Having to stare at those ancient reflections of myself through this process has not always been so easy, but Ive tried to be as honest as I can stand to be. God forbid Im not here when my daughter grows up, this is where she should start when shes ready to know what I wanted to tell her about the world.

Marisa And The Moths / Finding Kate / Izzy Thomas

Advance Discount Tickets:£ 9 + bf OTD Tickets: £12 Marisa And The Moths Cute band name, you say? Trust us: theres nothing moth-like about these guys. Featuring soaring vocals from Marisa Rodriguez and satisfying (yet sparingly deployed) lead flashiness from virtuosic six-stringer Sophie Lloyd, occasionally grunge, it\'s also the sort of sharp, chunky modern hard rock that makes you think of Halestorm, Foo Fighters, Audioslave, alongside touches of various rock heavyweights. Marisa And The Moths are a new band on the scene, and yet they\'ve already rapidly gathered a following which continues to grow at pace. They were recently played as a featured artist on Kerrang! radio and written up as a featured artist in Classic Rock magazine, where their debut single \'Skin\' was included on the front cover CD. Their debut self-titled album (released 15th November 2019) has been met with an incredibly positive response from the public. The album charted in the UK album downloads chart to number 66. They were also awarded Album Of The Year 2019 by Female fronted rock and metal revolution. As well as their own impressive social media presence, Sophie Lloyd, the bands lead guitarist has an impressive 248,000 subscribers on Youtube, 60,000 followers on Facebook, and 140,000 followers on Instagram. Juniore / Thu 23 April / Night & Day

The yy noir of Juniore has always been rooted in the cinematic as much as the musical. The Paris outfits blending of 1960s French pop, hazy psychedelia, seamless pop, surf grooves and lush orchestration feels as intertwined with big screen aesthetics as greatly as it does being found in the grooves of vinyl. So it makes perfect sense that the band would sooner or later find themselves appearing on more film and TV soundtracks, including the universally lauded drama Killing Eve. It marks a period of continuous upward trajectory and forward momentum for the band who, since the release of their acclaimed 2018 album Magnifique, have been exposed to more people all over the world via stages, screens and the airwaves (Panique was A Listed on BBC 6 Music a first for a French speaking band). From playing huge venues to thousands of people opening for the likes of the Dandy Warhols, to corners of dive bars with duct tape holding the stage together the band have been solidifying their sound, approach and relationship by playing extensively. Weve become more connected and better musicians, Says the bands songwriter and singer Anna-Jean. I think the new songs are full of that wonderful conversation we have with each other on stage. While that cross-pollination between sultry, sophisticated pop and good-time energy and vibrancy is certainly present, theres also a wealth of other touching points that underpin the record. So much so that Anna-Jean says of the themes that run through the album: It's a mix of everything we have loved and watched and felt in the last few years. It\'s like a laboratory of feelings not really my or our feelings but more universal feelings and emotions it\'s like a nonsensical Frankensteins laboratory." However, as fun as this record is, much like its predecessor, there\'s an underlying lyrical message that remains a key part of the bands identity as they push forward equality-based principles. It\'s the same as we\'ve been trying to state since the beginning, Anna-Jean suggests. The importance of being independent, of counterculture, humour and poetry. Of not taking ourselves seriously but being very serious about it and fighting against sexism, ageism, racism, consumerism all the worthwhile fights. www.facebook.com/heyjuniore www.heyjuniore.bandcamp.com www.instagram.com/heyjuniore www.twitter.com/heyjuniore

This means every performance will be unique and personally tailored not just TO, but BY the crowd. Best known for her "paper-puppetry" flipcharts on Facebook and YouTube and terrible one-liners on Twitter, Bec Hill: Out of Order will not disappoint. She has stripped out the filler, to ensure the whole event is as packed as possible with stand-up, pop-ups and post-its. This is the perfect show for anyone with a short attention spa- ???? Geoff Norcott - Taking Liberties

"Sets himself apart from the liberal commentariat with a sharp, self-knowing wit." - Dominic Maxwell, The Times As seen on Live At The Apollo, Mock The Week, The Mash Report, How The Middle Class Ruined Britain and Question Time. Winner of Best Comedy at the BBC Radio & Music Awards. Biggest UK Tour to date - EXTENDED! Geoff Norcott\'s acclaimed Taking Liberties tour has been doubled in size, with 25 new dates added in 2020. "There\'s been a lot of talk about extensions", says Geoff, "well, despite my political allegiances I\'m delighted with this one. It\'s time the people were given another say...on whether or not they want to see my show." Beyond left/right party politics and Brexit, Geoff Norcott has realised the main thing that motivates his political persuasion is that he hates being told what to do. Whether it\'s Eurocrats, ministers, cultural icons or his wife of 15 years, Geoff just can\'t stand anyone having power over him. It\'s a bad time to feel this way. With rising \'Nanny State\' legislations coming from a supposedly right-wing government and ever greater controls on food, lifestyle and language choices, \'Taking Liberties\' is both a statement on what Geoff fears is happening and his intent to playfully push the envelope. // Doors 7.15pm // Performance 8pm

Show Me The Body | Manchester, Gorilla

Tickets onsale Show Me The Body started as a band in 2009 consisting of Julian Cashwan Pratt (banjo and vocals), Harlan Steed (bass), and Gabriel Millman (drums). Noah Cohen-Corbett (current drummer) joined the band in 2014. Their unique sound is heavily influenced, both sonically and in attitude, by the city that reared them: New York. The band has been at the forefront of the city's underground since the release of their 2014 EP Yellow Kidney. Over the ensuing years Show Me The Body established themselves as one of the most exciting bands in the city, through their torrid live show and distinctive sonics. Dog Whistle, Show Me The Body's most immediate and critically acclaimed body of work to date, is heavy yet honest. The album was produced by Chris Coady, Show Me The Body, and Gabriel Millman (original drummer and current in-house producer). Dog Whistle was written in Long Island City, Queens and recorded in Los Angeles, California in the summer of 2018. "Dog Whistle is a call-to-arms directed at the community, its sonic urgency reflecting the mounting challenges of surviving in the city," writes The FADER. The album was released on March 29th, 2019 and follows Show Me The Body's debut album Body War. https://www.facebook.com/smtb.official/ https://showmethebody.bandcamp.com/ https://www.instagram.com/showmethebody/?hl=en https://corpus.nyc/

Strauss/Schnittke/Shostakovich

On 21 July 1985 Russian composer Alfred Schnittke was declared clinically dead three times after a colossal stroke but somehow he survived. Tonights Cello Concerto was the first work he completed after his recovery and is one of the most intense and astonishing works of the late 20th century. Cellist Jan Vogler joins Omer Meir Wellber and the orchestra for a programme that also takes in Richard Strausss sassy homage to a German folk hero and Shostakovichs Sixth Symphony, written as the storm clouds of the Second World War were gathering on the Russian horizon.

Far Caspian: The Deaf Institute, Manchester

SJM Concerts Present Far Caspian plus support Far Caspian has announced hell be playing Manchesters Deaf Institute on April 30th. Started from a basement home studio in Leeds, Joel Johnston launched Far Caspian in Summer 2018. Now 2 EPs in, the distinct melanjolly sound of Far Caspian that combines a hazy blend of intricate guitars, smart melodies, honest and introspective lyrics with a focussed lo-fi feel on production has led to sold out venues across the UK and EU and landed plays on Radio 1, 6 Music, Radio X and numerous Spotify and YouTube playlists generating a dedicated and growing fanbase across the world. Although laid back and modest in sound on record, Far Caspian as a live act is a different story. Joel brings in friends to turn the bedroom project into a full band resulting in a more driven and upbeat performance. The exciting sound live has been reflected in sell-out shows on the bands first UK and EU headlines including London, Manchester, Leeds, Paris and Berlin. Currently releasing a third EP solely written and produced by Joel and planning a debut album to follow Far Caspian promises to be an act that will keep pushing the boundaries of what \'lo-fi\' or \'bedroom pop\' can be and who this kind of music can reach. This tour news follows the announcement that Far Caspian will be releasing a brand-new song, July, on December 10th.

Darwin Deez - Manchester, Gorilla

SJM Concerts Presents darwin deez + guests 1st May 2020 Gorilla, Manchester 14+ show "a giddy live act for which he and his virtuosic backup band bring the dance party onstage with disarming sincerity. Deez's syrupy vocals skip playfully above highly danceable indie-pop grooves." The New Yorker Prince-meets-Jonathan Richman. Artfully artless, his songs sound as if they have burst out of him, fully formed snap-crackle-pop gems that are somehow both disposable and enduringly resonant - The Sunday Times Darwin Deez, totally f***ing awesome - NME Exhilarating...simple, yet irresistible - Q [Darwin Deez's] heartfelt guitar pop is pretty universal. Brooklyn Vegan Upon its release in April 2010 Darwin Deezs wonderfully off-kilter debut album, which featured hit singles Constellations and Radar Detector, was met with universal praise from international radio and press. By turns joyous and heart tugging, winsome and wistful, glorious and gorgeous, buoyed aloft by Deezs ear for a soaring chorus and a catchy tune, not to mention his knack for a killer couplet, Darwin self-proclaimed the album as being happy songs for sad people. Now, in order to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the release, Darwin and band are excited to be touring the album once more. The album will be performed in its entirety at each show, in addition to a number of select songs from Darwins other releases to-date. Singularly a brilliant, hilarious, complex, entertaining individual, Darwin Deez writes songs that will make you want to bust out your dancing shoes while also cutting to that raw, emotional nerve. Renowned for the most entertaining of live shows, with added choreographed dance routines, dont miss your chance to witness a rare insight into everything a pop star should be, and yet so rarely is.

The Voice Of The Whale: Manchester

In 1969, George Crumb heard a tape recording of undersea sounds emitted by a humpback whale. The experience never left him, and eventually inspired one of his most enigmatic pieces of music: Vox Balanae, or, Voice of the Whale. Its a perfect Manchester Collective piece, performed under blue light by anonymous, masked musicians, on instruments that are amplified and modified. Its music from another world, an undersea world that audiences will experience on stage, together with our players. Alongside Vox Balanae, we perform newly commissioned music by Alex Groves, Molly Joyces exuberant High and Low for solo piano, electro-acoustic madness from Andrew Hamilton, and Toru Takemitsus magical piano trio, Between Tides. Blackballed / Special Guests

BLACKBALLED are an English rock band from Manchester. Formed in 2012 by New Model Army guitarist Marshall Gill. Support - TBA YouTube Video: https://youtu.be/8QWEBnWKmdg A scorching desert crossroad, vultures circling high above three heat shimmering ratrods, windows down in the haze. Winding around the sound of roaring engines, hard hitting rock riffs and filthy blues grooves, wrapped in a gauze of pyschedelic soulfullness. A squeal of acceleration breaks free from a blast of streaking colour and scorching tyres, exploding into one huge melting pot of highly tuned, well oiled musical mastery. That my friend is the sound of Blackballed.... Blackballed's sound has been built by experienced musicians Marshall Gill (Guitar/Vocals) brother Leon (Drums/Vocals)and Tom Wibberley (Bass) who have appeared in their own right at the Pyramid Stage, Maida Vale, Sonisphere and toured Europe, Australia, Brazil and America In the middle of all this, sometime and somewhere in 2012 the brothers Gill realised that their "faffing about" in between their discussions of lamps, baggage and fish bands had resulted in a shed load of ideas and riffs they were keen to explore. So began the hunt for a bassist. Tom Wibberley soon completed the triad and Blackballed emerged with support gigs for Phil X (Bon Jovi) and Triggerfinger just weeks later. As Blackballed\'s reputation quickly grew their live shows rose in number and the band recorded a self titled EP in early 2013 to meet demand, setting off on an 11 date tour of Germany the following year. They returned with a sold out merch box and full order book which they used to fund the recording of their 10 track album Collosus, mastered in 2015 by Bunt Stafford Clark. "Blackballed have released a debut album that is full of epic sounding rock and Collossus has built upon the strong foundations heard in the previously released EP. This is one of those albums you are definitely going to want to hear." Rock and Roll Creations Once again the band, and newly acquired support camel, hit the road in 2015, tearing through double the number of shows across the UK and Europe and reaching fans further afield in America, Brazil and Australia. High octane appearances at Beautiful Days, Bearded Theory, Willowman, Strummercamp, Harefest, Deerstock, Jurrassic Fields, Maryport Blues and Rockstock alongside regular support slots at Holmfirth Picturedrome continued to carve out the bands reputation. Fans regularly travelling hundreds of miles to see the band and tattoists across the country doing a roaring trade in the bands unmistakeable logo. In 2016 the band spent time at Greenmount Studios pulling together - over just 5 days - the epic Fultons Point album. With an eyecatching hand drawn old school cover and whitewall disc the 10 tracks of the album signalled a new maturity and depth. The album begins with anticipation and haunting feedback, covering themes of manipulation, frustration and hope, ending with majestic closer House That Misery Built. With shades of Free, the Stones, QOTSA, Clutch and Led Zeppelin Fultons Point is an album that leaves you repeatedly rushing for the replay button. Following a packed out appearance at Bearded Theory the band scored an on the spot offer of the headline show at Deerstock in 2018 and have extended their third European Tour to 20 plus dates across 4 countries, closing with a return appearance at home town Strummercamp in May. Blackballed's reputation as a band not to be missed grows as they continue to smash down the walls at every show, leaving a line of converted fans in their wake. "Blackballed stunned all of us first timers with the energy of their performance...to make it entertaining - you need to be good. You need to be an expert before you can break the rules, and, happily Blackballed are expert musicians. " B Side Music Magazine A sharp silhouette, blistering performances, razor sharp musical skills and ear worm riffs.. Make no mistake. Blackballed are fresh blood in an anodyne world.

The Districts Live At YES, Manchester.

DHP Family Proudly Presents... The Districts live at YES, Manchester. Sunday 3rd May 2020. Doors: 7pm 18+ "You Know I'm Not Going Anywhere is an unachievable promise, says The Districts bandleader Rob Grote. Its about a dream for love to last forever and a yearning to postpone death. It is about wanting to escape everyday life while also craving time with one whos present. Its a plea to remain the same in the face of constant change, and the certainty of going nowhere fast. Written after playing nearly 200 shows over two years in support of their 2017 album, Popular Manipulations, The Districts fourth full-length You Know Im Not Going Anywhere almost never arrived. As they began to contemplate a new album, Grote and his longtime bandmates Pat Cassidy (guitar), Connor Jacobus (bass), and Braden Lawrence (drums) faced a transitional period that was painful for both personal and professional reasons, and found themselves fatigued and disoriented as a group. Grote also felt dysphoric from the anxiety-provoking state of the world today, while facing a daily battle with the dire health problems of his beloved dog. The Districts were forced to rethink everything. This album was written as an escape and as reassurance. I was falling in love with someone new and trying to juggle this desperate desire to escape with the need to show up in my life. Its pretty damn hard to be present and completely checked out all at once, Grote explains. It felt like much of my world had reached such a pitch that all I could do was try to tune it out. I felt really uncertain about the future of the band and super detached from much of what I used to identify with, on a personal level and with our music. I was thinking, Do I want to keep doing music? Do I want to keep doing it in this context? He ended up with a batch of 32 songs; but, these songs didnt sound like The Districts. Yet to his surprise, when Grote later played early demos for his bandmates, they loved them. Turns out these were Districts songs, and the Philadelphia-based band later decamped to a cabin in Red Hook, N.Y., where they recorded and produced the lions share of the album themselves alongside frequent collaborator Keith Abrams. While You Know I'm Not Going Anywhere builds on preceding albums, it takes an ambitious leap to a new level, exhibiting a widened sense of experimentation and expansiveness at its heart. Theres Rhodes, Mellotron, strings, samples, drum machines, tape loops, Wurlitzer, ambient swells, piano, synthesizers; Grote lists 12 instruments next to his name alone. Airy and understated, discordant and exuberant, and earnest all at once, You Know Im Not Going Anywhere is the culmination of The Districts growth and maturation through milestones and setbacks alike. Pulling from the propulsive Popular Manipulations, the jagged indie rock of 2015s A Flourish and a Spoil, and the rootsy vibe of their 2012 debut, Telephone, the band here followed their creative instincts every step of the way, resulting in their most sophisticated and adventurous record to date. I really just needed to be myself instead of being what someone else thought I should be, whether that was like some masculine bar-band singer or I dont know, Grote says, laughing. I just want to be myself, and I want to try and do that as best as I can. This record is paradoxically the most-Districts record ever with no intention of ever being one at all. Its about breaking free from how youre seen, always being yourself first and holding on to who you arebut also about coming together as a whole and putting your \'self\' aside. Doing all that, Ive realized, Oh, this is how I want to make music from now on!

Lauren Ruth Ward

We are thrilled to be bringing Lauren Ruth Ward back to Manchester, following on from her sold out show at The Rose & Monkey Hotel, just before Christmas 2019. Special guests to be announced shortly. Tickets on sale now Lauren Ruth Ward Everyone remembers the first time they see Lauren Ruth Ward sing. Not many singers has that effect. The thing is, you?ve never seen someone sing from every cell in their being and well, it changes your own chemistry for a moment. You think, if she can be bigger than her body, why can?t I? And just like that, you are empowered. What?s better, you never expected it would feel this fun. Critics have declared Lauren Ruth Ward as a cross between Janis Joplin, Florence Welch and Courtney Barnett. And while the consumer compass inside of us grasps at these to feel safe, comparisons don?t feel just when trying to describe such a singular presence as Lauren. Her debut album ?Well, Hell? garnered accolades from NYLON, Noisey, Consequence of Sound, the Los Angeles Times, Indie Shuffle and more. It introduced this Maryland native turned LA transplant to a world wide audience. Viral clips spread quickly of this new phenom?s visceral live performance. Singing in the faces of fans, songs like Blue Collar Sex Kitten, Make Love to Myself and the soul crushing Did I Offend You. I have a lot to say, she howls in the title track. An oriflamme of the tie-dye explosion of energy and emotion that was felt when she hit Echo Park. Fans and bands alike fell for Lauren. Many times taken aback that she would show up to all of their sets and even take her own time to promote the shows of bands she liked, building a whole community around her as this refreshingly supportive East Side music peer. Echo Park folk powerhouse Alicia Blue even released a song about LRW titled The Queen of Echo Park. In no time, LRW was playing to sold out crowds in the US and overseas, sharing stages with artists as diverse as the Yeah Yeah Yeah?s, Shirley Manson, Eddie Vedder, LP, Shakey Graves, Liz Phair and even Keith Urban; with a growing reputation for stealing the show. Now, having falling in love with the process of recording to tape, she is set to record her next album with LA producer/guru in the making, Matt Linesch. Talent met in equal parts with work ethic and a prolific writing process that she shares with guitar wizard Eduardo Rivera. We have already gotten a taste of her new material in songs like Valhalla, Wise Gal and Super Bullshit;in tact with that voice? sounding just as visceral but even more focused and mature. Lauren?s music videos are extensions of her art and serve as calling cards for a woman that will continue to have a lot to say. From the new material already released, it is evident she will deliver these messages of female empowerment and self discovery with honesty, beauty and poignancy.

Blancmange: Gorilla, Manchester

Blancmange was formed in Harrow, Middlesex in 1979 by vocalist Neil Arthur (born 15 June 1958, Darwen, Lancashire) and instrumentalist Stephen Luscombe (born 29 October 1954, Hillingdon, Middlesex). The duo released their first EP "Irene and Mavis" the following year, but had their first real exposure via a track on the seminal Some Bizzare Album, alongside fellow acts Soft Cell and Depeche Mode. This led to them signing a recording contract with London Records. The duo found minor success with their 1982 double A-sided single, "God\'s Kitchen"/"I\'ve Seen The Word" which peaked at no.65 in the UK. This was followed by "Feel Me" which peaked at no.46. Later that year, they broke through with "Living on the Ceiling", which reached no.7 in the UK Singles Chart. Their debut album, Happy Families (which featured a sleeve painting in the style of Louis Wain) also reached the top 30. Further hits followed with "Waves" (no.19), "Blind Vision" (no.10), "That\'s Love That It Is" (no.33) and "Don\'t Tell Me" (no.8), while their second album Mange Tout also reached no.8 in the UK album chart. In 1984, Blancmange covered ABBA\'s single "The Day Before You Came", which reached no.22 in the UK (slightly higher than Abba\'s original less than two years earlier). But after this, the band\'s fortunes declined. Their 1985 single "What\'s Your Problem" only reached no.40, and the subsequent album Believe You Me spent only two weeks in the UK Albums Chart, peaking at no.54. Blancmange formally split up in 1987.

Murder By Death 20th Anniversary Show Live At Night & Day Cafe

DHP Family present Murder By Death Advance tickets via TicketWeb UK Friday 10am here: https://tinyurl.com/MBD2020 On the surface, Murder By Death is a Bloomington, IN quintet with a wry, ominous name. But behind the geography and moniker is a band of meticulous and literary songwriters matched by a specific brand of brooding, anthem-riding balladry and orchestral indie rock. Murder By Deaths path began in the early 2000s as most Midwestern college-town groups do, by playing to small crowds at ratty venues and frenzied house parties. While many of their formative-year scene-mates failed to make it much further than campustowns borders, Murder By Death translated their anonymous beginnings into a 10+ year career founded on a bedrock of five full-length albums, tireless D.I.Y. touring and performing ethics, and, most importantly, a dedicated, cult-like fanbase. Since the band began in 2001, their audience has blossomed due in part to extended tours alongside similarly hardworking musical kin such as Against Me!, Gaslight Anthem, Lucero, William Elliott Whitmore, Ha Ha Tonka, and others. Through more than 1,000 performances across the United States, Canada and Europe, Murder By Death has gained word-of-mouth devotees and support from the likes of media outlets like SPIN Magazine, who said of the band, They brawl like Johnny Cashs cellmates or dreamily swoon like Nick [Cave], stomping saloon floorboards in 4/4 time as grand strings fade into high noon. What resonates most with supporters is the bands energetic, unique, and altogether consistent sound and conceptualized vision. The personnel and ingredients of the group consist of Sarah Balliets throaty cello melodies, singer/guitarist Adam Turlas booming baritone vocals and brawny guitar strumming, drummer Dagan Thogerson and bassist Matt Armstrongs locked-down, post-punk rhythm section interplay, and Scott Bracketts (formerly of Okkervil River and Shearwater) multi-instrumentalist bag of tricks (including piano, trumpet, accordion, mandolin, vocals, percussion). The overriding sound is an amalgamation of textures ranging from dark and desolate to upbeat and brightly melodic, all of it landing somewhere under the orchestrated indie rock umbrella. The other mainstay signature element of Murder By Deaths identity has been built by the overriding concepts behind each individual album. Every successive effort conjures up fresh imaginative and tactile worlds whether its the battle between the Devil and a small Western town (Who Will Survive and What Will Be Left of Them?, 2003), an arid land of death and redemption (In Bocca al Lupo, 2006), or just songs inspired by a retreat into the Tennessee mountains (Good Morning, Magpie, 2010). On September 25, the band releases their newest full-length and Bloodshot Records debut Bitter Drink, Bitter Moon. The album was written throughout 2011 in a basement in southern Indiana, and recorded in winter 2011 in Dallas, TX with producer-in-demand John Congleton (Explosions in the Sky, St Vincent, Black Mountain). https://murderbydeath.com www.facebook.com/MurderByDeath www.twitter.com/murderbydeath www.instagram.com/murderbydeath

Brothers Osborne: Albert Hall, Manchester

Two sons from a working-class family, John and TJ Osborne grew up in a small, Maryland water town writing and playing songs for friends and family in their fathers shed. John moved to Nashville first to play in other bands and two years later, TJ joined him. It was then they formed Brothers Osborne as a duo that blends equal parts country and rock into one of the freshest, most identifiable sounds to come out of Nashville in recent years. The singer/songwriter siblings currently reign as three-time CMA Vocal Duo of the Year in addition to being named ACM Vocal Duo of the Year the past two years. Overall Brothers Osborne have collected four CMA and five ACM trophies including Video of the Year wins for their Top 10 GRAMMY-nominated Platinum single It Aint My Fault. Brothers Osborne's debut album PAWN SHOP was released January 2016 and has been certified Gold by the RIAA. PAWN SHOP features three GRAMMY-nominated tracks including It Aint My Fault, the Platinum Certified No. 1 smash hit Stay A Little Longer, as well as Top 25 hit 21 Summer. Their current Top 40 single I Dont Remember Me (Before You) is included on their sophomore album, PORT SAINT JOE, which continues to receive acclaimed reviews from critics and fans alike and was recently nominated for Best Country Album at the 61st GRAMMY Awards. Brothers Osborne has previously toured with Eric Church, Little Big Town, Miranda Lambert and more. The duo just wrapped their Headlining World Tour which hit over 40 markets including London, Toronto, New York, Los Angeles as well as three sold out nights at the famed Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Later this year they will play select dates with Chris Stapleton and Willie Nelson.

James Manson - New Commission | Haydn - Symphony no 101 in D major \'The Clock\' | Beethoven - Violin Concerto op 61 Tickets: 27-13 | Full Time Students 5.50 | Under 18s Free Superb British violinist Anthony Marwood is equally at home playing the great concertos, chamber music and pioneering new works. We eagerly await his interpretation of Beethovens Olympian Violin Concerto. The concert begins with a new piece specially composed by our principal double bass player and resident composer, James Manson. Previous compositions, Meeting at Nisqueunia and Softly Pleads my Song have been very well received. Haydn was 61 when he visited London for the second time and must have revelled in the huge popularity he had there. His D major symphony has a large-scale grandeur alongside sophisticated wit and broad humour together with his inexhaustible inventiveness.

Tom Robinson 70th Birthday Show At Band On The Wall, Manchester

Tom Robinson: Never Too Late 70th Birthday Tour Wednesday 20th May 2020 Tickets on sale now via bit.ly/trobinsonbotw Although many of Tom Robinson's 70s contemporaries such as The Jam, Elvis Costello and Ian Dury have spawned tribute bands, to the best of his knowledge no such act has ever attempted to cover his own back catalogue. Which of those songs, he wondered, would a Tom Robinson tribute band choose to assemble a full-on crowdpleasing set? There'd have to be the songs co-written with Elton John and Peter Gabriel. Also those unexpected comeback hits of the 1980s such as War Baby and Atmospherics. Not to mention the stone-cold punk-era classics that launched his career: Motorway, Power In The Darkness, Up Against The Wall, Too Good To be True and of course the anthemic Glad To Be Gay. In 2020 the veteran broadcaster and songwriter will mark 70 years on the planet by embarking on a month-long tour with his incendiary live band playing highlights from his own 45 year career in music. There may not have been a Tom Robinson tribute act until now - but as the chorus of his debut single puts it: "2-4-6-8... ain\'t never too late". After a stint in the acoustic trio Caf Society, culminating in a 1975 album produced by Ray Davies, Tom founded his own group TRB (Tom Robinson Band) with the late Danny Kustow in 1976. The group were early supporters of Rock Against Racism and the following year their debut single 2-4-6-8 Motorway became one of the landmark singles of the UK punk era. Mild notoriety followed in 1978 when Radio 1 banned Tom\'s follow-up anthem "Glad To Be Gay" and subsequent hits included Up Against The Wall and TRB\'s debut album Power In The Darkness which went gold in the UK and Japan. His third band Sector 27 was produced by Steve Lillywhite and and went on to play Madison Square Garden in 1981, opening for The Police. After the group\'s management went bankrupt, Tom fled to Hamburg to avoid going the same way, and then became first UK musician ever to tour East Germany, backed by local musicians. Tom returned to chart success as a solo artist in 1983 with War Baby and Atmospherics: Listen To The Radio; and co-wrote songs with Peter Gabriel, Elton John and Dan Hartman. In the 1990s, following a one-man tour of Ireland, he signed to Cooking Vinyl records and released three critically acclaimed solo albums. As a broadcaster Tom won his first Sony Radio Award in 1997 for his BBC London documentary "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away". Ever since helping launch BBC Radio 6 Music in 2002 (and helping save it from closure in 2010) he has worked full time at the station, where he won a second Sony in 2011 and currently presents three shows a week. This is a standing show.

The Orb At O2 Ritz | Manchester

The Orb are an English electronic music group known for being the pioneers of ambient house and were founded in 1988 by Alex Paterson and The KLF member Jimmy Cauty. The Orb virtually invented the electronic genre known as ambient house, resurrecting slower, more soulful rhythms and providing a soundtrack for early-morning ravers once the clubs closed their doors. Members of the Orb have been fluid over the years, with Paterson remaining the only constant throughout. Paterson is a Battersea resident, punk & acid house veteran. His career in music started in the early 1980s as a roadie for Killing Joke for whom his childhood friend Martin Youth Glover played bass. After leaving the Killing Joke crew in 86, Paterson met future KLF member Jimmy Cauty and the duo began DJ-ing together as The Orb. The duo started a residency in the chill out room at legendary London club night The Land of Oz at Londons Heaven. Their style of sonic tapestry DJing soon morphed naturally into making records. Then, in 1988 Patterson and Youth put together the seminal acid house/Balearic label WAU! Mr. Modo Records. In 1990, Paterson (and then Orb member, Youth) released the bona-fide classic Little Fluffy Clouds, which borrowed a sample from Steve Reich\'s Electric Counterpoint, and transported it to another dimension. In 1991, Paterson invited freelance studio engineer Andy Falconer to join the Orb. He was closely followed by studio engineer Kris "Thrash" Weston. Steve Hillage, who Paterson had met while DJ-ing in London, also joined as a guitarist. Along with producer Thomas Fehlmann, the Orb completed several tracks for their first album, The Orb\'s Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld. 1992 saw the single Blue Room reach # 8 in the British charts (despite its playing time of almost 40 minutes). The Orb promoted this single by performing on Top of the Pops playing a game of chess wearing space suits while footage of dolphins whilst an edited version of Blue Room ran in the background. In July 1992, U.F.Orb was released featuring Blue Room. Weston integrated his technical and creative expertise with Paterson\'s Eno-influenced ambience on U.F.Orb, combining "drum and bass rhythms" with "velvet keyboards" and "rippling synth lines". U.F.Orb reached #1 on the British album charts to the shock of critics, who were surprised that fans had embraced what journalists considered to be progressive rock. Despite the Orb\'s success, Paterson and Weston preferred to avoid personal publicity and instead allow their music to be the focus of attention. Longplayers The Orb\'s Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld and U.F.Orb, are often cited as seminal classics and the latter reached #1 in the British album charts in 1992. Paterson also co-wrote the peerless Higher Than The Sun by Primal Scream. During their live shows of the 1990s, the Orb performed using digital audio tape machines optimised for live mixing and sampling before switching to laptops and digital media. Despite changes in performance method, the Orb maintained their colourful light shows and psychedelic imagery in concert. These visually intense performances prompted critics to compare the group to Pink Floyd. Because of their trippy sound, the Orb developed a cult following among clubbers "coming down" from drug-induced highs. Following the success of U.F.Orb, the group signed to Island Records and released the live album Live 93 on the label. The double-disc set -- which hit number 23 in the album charts -- included highlights from Orb appearances in Europe and Japan, and featured another clever dig at Pink Floyd: the cover has a large stuffed sheep suspended over a power station, la Floyd\'s Animals cover. Little Fluffy Clouds and Perpetual Dawn were re-issued and became top 20 hits in the UK. In 1995, The Orbs third studio album Orbus Terrarum was released charting at number twenty in the UK and producing the single Oxbow Lakes. Orblivion followed in February 1997 and peaked at number nineteen in the United Kingdom; it also became the group\'s first album to chart in the United States, peaking at number 174 on the Billboard 200 chart. Toxygene became their first UK top five single and also charted at number 23 in Ireland. The Orbs fifth studio album Cydonia was released in February 2001 following several delays, peaking at number 83 in the United Kingdom. The group subsequently left Island Records and released several albums on assorted labels including Bicycles & Tricycles (2004) on Cooking Vinyl. The same year, the Little Big Horn 12 came out on Kompakt, plus the album Lowflow on Plug Research, before 2005 saw album Okie Dokie, its The ORB on Kompakt hit the shops. In 2007, The Orb released The Dream on Liquid Sound Design and Baghdad Batteries (Orbsessions Volume III) in 2010 on Malicious Damage. 2008 saw long-time Orb collaborator Thomas Fehlmann record his first soundtrack with Paterson as The Orb, for the feature movie Plastic Planet by Werner Boote. In 09, Fehlmann recorded the soundtrack for the documentary 24hours Berlin, which was screened on TV in its full 24-hour form across Europe. He also remixed tracks for Depeche Mode and Sigur Ros, plus The Orb album Baghdad Batteries was released. In 2010, the 24hours Berlin soundtrack album Gute Luft was released on Kompakt and The Orb began work on the opera Moonbuilding with The Orb, which was commissioned by Londons Royal Opera House. Metallic Spheres, a collaboration with English musician David Gilmour, was also released. It gave the group their highest-charting album in the UK since U.F.Orb, peaking at number twelve on the country\'s albums chart. Metallic Spheres also charted in several European countries, including Belgium, Greece and Ireland. 2011 marked the release of symphonic piece Titan One on Kompakt and in 2012, the Orb released The Orbserver in the Star House, their 13th studio album, collaborating with Jamaican reggae musician Lee Scratch Perry. They collaborated again on the follow-up album More Tales from the Orbservatory, released in 2013. In 2015, The Orb released Moonbuilding 2703 AD, a major piece of psychedelic synth bliss, obscure loops and deep ambient textures, driven by swinging breakbeats and powerful basslines. COW / Chill Out, World! followed a year later. Featuring only the occasional presence of buoyant, gently rhythmic pulses and loops, Paterson describes COW as our most ambient album yet. In 2016, The Orb performed their seminal debut album Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld in full for the first time ever, to mark its 25th anniversary at Brixton Academy. For the gig, Paterson and Fehlmann were joined on stage by the original cast of collaborators who helped create the magic on this influential, era-defining milestone including Youth, Steve Hillage, Miquette Giraudy, Andy Falconer, Hugh Vickers, Tom Green, David Herman and punk icon Paul Cook (Sex Pistols), a heavy influence on The Orb. The Orb release their fifteenth studio album, No Sounds Are Out of Bounds, on 22nd June 2018 via Cooking Vinyl. The Orb are confirmed to perform at Londons Roundhouse on 23rd June 2018, for a 30th celebration of the band. ORBFEST is an all-day Orb curated festival bringing together some of the most important, exciting and current acts in electronic music. The day will also feature the classic Orb line-up that includes Fluffy Clouds by co-originator and producer Youth along with Roger Eno, Michael Rendall and special guests. Support and performances will come from Leftfield, Gas (Wolfgang Voigt), Ulrich Schnauss, System 7 and Chocolate Hills. The Orb have released 14 studio albums plus EPs, singles, compilations and live recordings, influencing countless other musicians along the way. Paterson has collaborated with Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd) Steve Hillage (Gong), Jah Wobble (PiL), Lee Scratch Perry and Robert Fripp (King Crimson).

Skipinnish Manchester Academy

Skipinnish encompasses the very best of contemporary Celtic music with a unique and sublime mix of chart-topping, self-penned songs and powerful bagpipe, fiddle and accordion-led tune sets. As a result, the band has built a loyal and strong fan base since its formation, by co-founders Andrew Stevenson and Angus MacPhail, on the Isle of Tiree in 1999. It has evolved into an 8-piece that has been named Live Act of the Year on two occasions at the Trad Music Awards and gained widespread recognition with the 2017 album The Seventh Wave. The Seventh Wave referred to in the bands album title is said to have the power to heal and rejuvenate . their music itself seems to bear the same legendary power. (folkradio.co.uk) Skipinnishs wonderfully evocative song writing coupled with the boundless energy of the live shows continues to captivate audiences throughout the UK and continental Europe.
