Ned's Acoustic Dustbin / Fri 24 Jan / Night & Day

Ned\'s Acoustic Dustbin to release album and play dates... In September 2017, Neds were about to announce their first UK tour for 28 years with The Wonder Stuff. Miles and Erica from TWS were ready to play acoustically for that live Facebook broadcast to make the announcement, so Miles suggested that Neds play a couple of their songs acoustically too. We dont do acoustic says Jonn. We dont do acoustic says Rat. Ill play guitar for you Jonn says Miles, cunningly. No, Ill play guitar! says Rat. Neds Acoustic Dustbin was born. Jonn hates to hear his voice laid bare, Rat was never a fan of playing acoustic guitar hes the noise monger, the guy with infinite delay, chunky distortion and a wrist that does 200rpm. How on earth do you squeeze the essence out of songs written with Alex and Mats two bass guitars and Rats effect-laden sound? Take away Dans drums too? Rat likes a challenge. He has got the acoustic bug you can hear it in spades through these masterful interpretations. Now Miles has bullied them into recording 14 songs in 4 days at the foot of the Long Mynd and somehow, hes captured this Neds Acoustic vitality with aplomb. What a happy little tale huh? The album is released on Friday 13th December on Good Deeds Music. Presales available now: gooddeedsmusic.bigcartel.com/product/ned-s-acoustic-dustbin Rat and Jonn are playing live dates - tickets on sale now. 7th Dec Leicester, Firebug: https://bit.ly/2PMEZbx 24th Jan Manchester, Day & Night: https://bit.ly/2WStsLm 30th Jan Bristol, The Exchange: https://bit.ly/2Cop9hq 31st Jan Wolverhampton, Newhampton Arts Centre: https://bit.ly/2JZ0Z14 8th Feb London, Lexington: https://bit.ly/2rncFoa

The Teskey Brothers - Manchester, Gorilla

THE TESKEY BROTHERS FIND THEIR COLLECTIVE VOICE ON HIGHLY ANTICIPATED SECOND ALBUM RUN HOME SLOW Opening with a false start and a song called Let Me Let You Down, you might be wondering if Australias The Teskey Brothers are trying to hint at something. But any concern about their second album, Run Home Slow, the highly anticipated follow up to their much-loved 2017 debut, is immediately allayed once the band kicks in, for real this time, all shuffling rhythm and guitar stabs coated in Josh Teskeys era-defying, honeyed croon. Over the next ten wide-ranging songs, The Teskey Brothers more than deliver on the promise of their first record, Half Mile Harvest, and manage to pull off a feat that has eluded many other bands: theyve followed up a breakthrough debut with an album that not only pushes their music in new directions, and in the process solidifies their sound into something truly theirs, but theyve done it without sacrificing any of the charm and authenticity that endeared them to their audience in the first place. We were really aware that we didnt want to alienate fans, drummer Liam Gough says. We love our fans and feel really proud of the first album, but the second album needed to be a step up. To help them navigate this process they enlisted the help of producer Paul Butler (Michael Kiwanuka, St Paul & The Broken Bones, Andrew Bird) who flew in to work with the band at their home studio in Warrandyte, Victoria. In Paul, The Teskeys found a mentor and critic who would allow them to progress sonically without losing the raw simplicity and space they had achieved on Half Mile Harvest. Bassist Brendon Love adds: There was trust from the very first phone call. He really tapped into who we are but also found a way to push us out of our comfort zone. The result is a bold and sophisticated album featuring the same classic song-writing but introducing new elements like strings, saxophone, banjo, lap steel and even the musical saw. Paul is a zen-master, Brendon says. As far as coming in, knowing how to take control when needed, but also allowing space for everyone to be creative and have their opinions fully realised. What they have produced together is The Teskey Brothers most collaborative effort yet, with all members contributing to the song writing and bringing musical and lyrical ideas to the table. Its definitely representative of the band as a whole, says Brendon. Its a very collaborative album and includes everyones aesthetics and writing abilities as well as sensibilities musically. Largely written over the last two years, while relentlessly touring the world in support of their debut, Run Home Slow finds the band in a contemplative and reflective mood. Having spent the previous decade quietly honing their craft in relative obscurity while holding down day jobs, The Teskey Brothers suddenly found themselves in new territory. For the last two years weve been touring and playing music and been lucky enough to make music a vocation, Brendon says. But with that has come challenges in our personal lives as far as the pressure it can put on your home life and the balance you need to find. Songs like Let Me Let You Down and Paint My Heart deal with that directly. Of the latter guitarist Sam Teskey says, that ones about trying to hold a relationship together from a distance. Man Of The Universe similarly touches on the dislocation you can feel when youre constantly on the move, not sure where you call home. But it also revels in this freedom. The simple subject of the song is, stop trying to label everything, and say were from here, or this place is better than that or these people are better than those, singer and guitarist Josh Teskey says. Its a real coming together of everything song, saying Hey, dont put a label on me! Avoiding labels is something that The Teskey Brothers have also strived for musically on Run Home Slow, incorporating elements of southern rock (Paint My Heart), Americana (San Francisco), psychedelia (Sun Come Ease Me In), Dixieland jazz (Sunshine Baby) and gospel in the glorious, celebratory and near-acapella lead single Hold Me. Stripped back to its most rudimentary form, boots stomping on floorboards, claps holding the beat, and four friends harmonising around a single microphone, Josh Teskey rouses the pack with opening line: That storm coming down hard, Im your shelter anytime it starts. Its a primal, haunting reminder of what the band can do in a room with only a few instruments around them. Perhaps the most striking departure is album centrepiece, So Caught Up. When the band first started jamming on the song they were a bit disarmed by the poppy new territory they found themselves in. I guess we were a bit worried about it being too much of a pop song and wanted to make sure that it didnt sound like a huge departure from our previous stuff, Liam says. It was a bit different to what wed normally play, Brendon says. But we were also quite excited about that. Not sure where this more modern soul sounding tune fit, they tried lots of different things with this track to see where it fits with The Teskey Brothers, Sam says. But no matter how hard we tried to steer it away from being a pop banger, it just came out in the song laughs Josh. Its just this song that is a bit of a pop banger. Sam continues, Everyone weve shown that track to says, Thats a banger, thats a cool tune. Weve learnt to embrace what that song is. We dont want to stifle or get in the way of that. Choosing to end the album with That Bird, a song that came to Josh in a dream while camping in the Colorado wilderness, is the perfect closer. A gentle reflective groove, with a sentiment that Brendon reckons sums up the mood of the album perfectly. Its basically a conversation ruminating on this idea, he says. Is it better to live in the present and forget about the past or is it better to learn from the past and try and use those mistakes to grow from? In Run Home Slow, The Teskey Brothers have made an album that honours their past, resonates wonderfully in the present and looks forward to a continually brighter future.

Kate Davis / Gullivers, Manchester / Mon 27 Jan

Kate Davis picked up a violin at age five, a bass at age thirteen. She entered the Portland Youth Philharmonic before puberty, the Grammy Jazz Ensemble before adolescence. By the time she graduated high school, Kate won the Presidential Scholar in the Arts Award and a full ride to the Manhattan School of Music. By the time she graduated college, ASCAPs Robert Allen Award and slots at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. As a young adult, the virtuoso claimed enthusiastic endorsements from NPR, MTV, PBS and BBC as well as coveted invitations to the stage from Herbie Hancock, Ben Folds, Alison Krauss, Jeff Goldblum and the like. Most recently, she co-wrote Sharon Van Ettens hit single Seventeen and contributed to the soundtrack for blockbuster Five Feet Apart. Yet, Kate Davis considers her debut indie rock album her hardest-earned accolade to date. Kate grew up as a jazz darling, but she grew into something significantly more dynamic. Days spent practicing and performing became nights spent writing cathartic indie rock music simultaneously informed by and rebutting of her training. Forbidden chord progressions emerged like diary entries, documents of an internal reaction to routine. Time intended for technique slipped into secret listening sessions of Beach House, Elliot Smith and TV On The Radio. In the same bright, arresting croon that ignited her youthful stardom, Davis created confessionals. Now 28 and audibly matured, Kate is prepared to properly share the artefacts from her late night craft, a full length reaction to ritual required of perfection, an outburst from the pedestal. Throughout twelve tumultuous tracks, she poetically reflects upon the intricacies of what it is to live, ruminating on topics too close to her heart identity, self-worth, loss. Trophy will be released November 8, 2019 on Solitaire Recordings. Price: 7.50 adv Info/tickets: https://www.heymanchester.com/kate-davis

Keeley Forsyth Live At YES, Manchester.

DHP Family Proudly Present... Keeley Forsyth live at YES, Manchester. Tuesday 28th January 2020. Doors: 7pm 18+ The songs comprising Keeley Forsyths debut, an intimate document of personal change, are, she states simply, like blocks of metal that drop from the sky. The images severity is indicative of the album which provoked it. With its minimal arrangements placing her recollections and dissections of sometimes harrowing experiences front and centre, Debris showcases her elemental voice and an outpouring of candid, haunting lyrics detailing the seismic ruptures which take place behind closed doors. There was a lot going on in my life that was heavy and hard, she adds. Songs were made under that moment. Born and raised in Oldham in the north-west of England, Forsyth first made her name as an actor, but while the creation of music has been a constant feature in her life, shes taken the long road to its release. A deeply intuitive and singular musician, she began writing several years ago, accompanying herself on harmonium and accordion, but reveals that I never really acknowledged that I was making music. It was just something I did that was a bit more private.

The Harmaleighs Live At The Castle Hotel, Manchester.

DHP Family Proudly Present.. The Harmaleighs + Support TBC live at The Castle Hotel, Manchester. Wednesday 29th January 2020. Doors: 7.30pm 18 + The Harmaleighs have crafted a sophomore record that exists beyond the boundaries of any one genre. At times, the album is loud and tenacious while other moments require a more vulnerable cadence. Its a new path for the Nashville pair, but it remains rooted in their respective roles. Haley Grant who takes on lead vocals and guitar, often pushes melodies to a more raw and tender edge while Kaylee Jasperson, on bass and backup vocals, guides the heartbeat and overall structure of the music. Past versions of the band have been sparser, but the groups newest album calls for a bigger backing. The record, titled She Wont Make Sense explores new territory in sound and subject matter. The latter deals directly with Haleys mental health, documenting the many forms depression can take. Opening tune, Anthem for the Weak introduces Haleys anxiety, which she named Susan. Its a preview of whats to come, as the record continues like a conversation between the two. The whole album is me talking to Susan or Susan acting on my behalf, says Haley. Its that dialogue with your inner self and how at times it feels like that inner voice has more control over you than you do. Musically, the track opens with a Wurlitzer-esque melody that feels bright yet disconcerting. That kind of juxtaposition is found throughout the entire arc of the record, and is something the two intentionally played with: We definitely wanted the musical aspect of it to make you feel anxious. What comes next is the lead single for the record and one of the more powerful tracks on the album. With a pulsing rhythm, Sorry, Im Busy drives into the listener an impending sense that a tipping point is near. The dialogue between Haley and Susan is on full display with lyrics like, Youre holding my breath, making me red, I want to go to bed, is it night yet? Cancel the plans, theyll understand, until they dont understand. It is a full on rock song, but the more hushed moments before the big drops are a reminder of The Harmaleighs dynamic range. Musically, The Harmaleighs have evolved from their acoustic beginnings, bringing in synths, strings and an overall heavier sound to parallel the emotional weight behind the album. We use to tour just the two of us, and do more of an acoustic thing, says Kaylee. Were going to lean more towards a full band with a bigger sound. Its a natural progression for a band to experiment, but Haley and Kaylee attribute much of their transformation to producer (and Lucius drummer) Dan Molad. Kaylee describes working with Molad as amazing and you can hear throughout the record the many ways that both Haley and Kaylee pushed the confines of their instruments and aesthetic. Many of the tracks contain an almost vintage, horror pop quality and this is no better displayed than on Dont Panic. Driven almost entirely by a retro sounding synth, the tracks feels both spacious and distressing with lines like Im biting my nails till they bleed, as Im watching my love sleep comfortably. It is beautiful and eerily dissonant, and requires more than one listen to fully absorb. At the heart of the record, is the act of letting go and most poignantly addressed in album closer I Dont Know Myself. It asks a bigger question about whether the darkest parts of ourselves are vital to who we are. Haley describes seeking treatment and the prescriptions that followed. As I started taking all of this stuff, it was like all of the parts of my personality that I really enjoyed, were no longer there. I didnt feel creative, I wasnt dreaming. So when I wrote that last song, it was like do I need this aspect that makes my life so difficult but also so rewarding, or do I let that go and live more peacefully? Its still an open-ended question. She Wont Make Sense is out August 2 (2019) and signals a real period of growth and evolution for The Harmaleighs. Relationships ended, a bigger sound was discovered and ultimately, the album reaches a more nuanced level of emotional depth. Requiring a remarkable amount of openness from both Haley and Kaylee, the two have started a new conversation with their audience for all of the unease the album transmits, a sense of resilience shines through, even in the most vulnerable of moments.

Lower Dens Live At YES, Manchester.

DHP Family Proudly Presents... Lower Dens live at YES, Manchester, Wednesday 29th January 2020. Doors: 7pm 18+ The Competition, the fourth album from Lower Dens, is a pop album with a concept both emotionally and politically urgent. The title is lead singer and songwriter Jana Hunters term for a sociopsychological phenomenon that, in different ways, binds us all. Modern capitalism by nature generates a kind of psychosis an inability to process its constant stimuli and contradictions that accelerates our insecurities and anxieties to the point of total overload, corroding our intimacies, our communities, and our senses of self. The Competition speaks, in various ways, to the necessity of socially de-conditioning ourselves and learning how to be people, Hunter says. The issues that have shaped my life, for better or for worse, have to do with coming from a family and a culture that totally bought into this competitive mindset.

The Felice Brothers - Manchester, Gorilla

With Undress, their first new album in three years, The Felice Brothers manage to walk that delicate tightrope between timely and timeless, crafting a collection thats urgently relevant to the modern social and political landscape without ever losing sight of the larger picture. Offering moral clarity and sober reflection through nuanced character studies and artful parables, the band tips their caps to the biting wit of Mark Twain and the keen observation of Woody Guthrie here, presenting a series of portraits that mix the mundane and the fantastical in such a way as to blur the line between reality and metaphor: a man tosses all of his possessions into a smoldering crater; a White House spokeswoman stands naked before the nation; a small town kid turns to crime when his neighbors forsake him. In the world of The Felice Brothers, the traditionally powerfulpoliticians, preachers, punditsare comical at best, rendered impotent by their own narcissistic ambition, while those who traffic in kindness and generosity are larger-than-life heroes, cast as everyday saviors walking the streets of a thankless society. In that sense, Undress fits neatly into a long tradition of American folk storytelling, embracing what came before it even as it offers its own unique 21st Century twists along the way. Folk music has been a part of every era in American history, says guitarist/singer/songwriter Ian Felice. When you work within that folk idiom to tell a story about the human condition, you can hopefully end up with something that feels classic and current all at once. While Undress contains many of the musical hallmarks The Felice Brothers have come to be known for since first emerging from New Yorks Hudson Valley more than a decade ago (ragged guitars, weighty lyrics, a Replacements-esque sense that the wheels might come off at any moment), the record marks something of a new chapter for the group after undergoing major personal and professional changes. During the break between albums, Ian became a father and released both his first solo record and his first book of poetry, while new bassist Jesske Hume (Conor Oberst, Jade Bird) joined drummer Will Lawrence in rounding out the rhythm section following the departure of two longtime members. Jess and Will make for a truly solid rhythm section, and having that kind of strength really frees up Ian and me onstage every night, says James Felice, who plays keyboards and accordion in addition to sharing writing and vocal duties with his brother. Theres nothing quite like the feeling of being completely supported by great musicians. Supportmusical, emotional, familialhas been at the heart of The Felice Brothers from the very start. Inspired as much by Hart Crane and Walt Whitman as Pete Seeger and Chuck Berry, the band first began performing on subway platforms and sidewalks in New York City in 2006. Within just a few years, they were playing Radio City Music Hall with Bright Eyes and appearing everywhere from the Newport Folk Festival to Levon Helms Midnight Ramble. Theyd go on to release a series of critically acclaimed albums that pushed the boundaries of modern folk, with The New York Times likening their music to the rootsy mysticism of the Band and The Guardian hailing their songs as impeccably crafted, with literary-minded lyrics that are both playful and profound. The band shared bills with Old Crow Medicine Show and Mumford & Sons among others, took their blistering live show to Coachella, Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, and countless other festivals across the US and Europe, and backed up Conor Oberst extensively in the studio and on the road. For a perpetually touring band like The Felice Brothers, the stage is an essential barometer for any new material, so before recording a single note of Undress, they packed up their van and took the songs out for a three-week test drive. A bunch of revelations happen when you start to play a song live, explains Ian. Its really important way for us to figure out what works and what doesnt. By the time they headed into the studio in upstate New York, theyd locked in arrangements and culled their pool of 30 new songs down to a still-ambitious 20. Recording live to tape with producer/engineer Jeremy Backofen (Frightened Rabbit, lf Arnalds), songs were generally captured in three or four takes, with raw, loose performances that emphasized vocal harmonies more than ever before. We just played all day every day for about two weeks in the studio, says James. Weve worked with Jeremy in the past, and hes a great architect and boss for us. He lets us do what we want, but he pays really close attention to performance and has such a good ear for feel. Undress opens with the sardonic title track, a tightly grooving stream-of-consciousness that strips away the faades of money and power to confront the ugliness underneath. Republicans and Democrats undress / Even the evangelicals, yeah you lighten up, undress, Ian sings, juxtaposing Caesars of wall street and trigger happy deputies with Native American genocide and nuclear winter. Politics weighs heavily on the album, but its often tackled from surrealistic perspective that highlights the absurdity of it all. The Jack Spicer-inspired Socrates finds a songwriter sentenced to death for questioning a tyrannical government, while the cutting Special Announcement sees its narrator saving up my money to be president. Dark as its depiction of the halls of government may be, Undress ultimately believes in the inherent goodness of mankind, chalking our failings up not to malice but rather to being victims of a system rigged against us going all the way back to Adam and Eve. Over waltzing pedal steel on The Kid, Ian contemplates our own complicity in the wrongdoing of those we turn our backs on, while the banjo-driven Hometown Hero finds a petty criminal daydreaming of the parade that awaits his release from prison, and the tender Poor Blind Birds depicts humanity as helpless, innocent, fumbling for survival. Its perhaps the infectious Salvation Army Girl, though, that offers the most hope for the future. I wanted a song about a female superhero, explains Ian, one whose superpower is charity. In his stark 1982 masterpiece Nebraska, Bruce Springsteen concluded, I guess theres just a meanness in this world. The Felice Brothers might not disagree, but with Undress, theyd like to remind you that theres a kindness, too.

DRAMA / Wed 29 Jan / Night & Day

Pre-Sale 8pm Wednesday here : http://gigst.rs/DraMcrpre General Sale 10am Friday here : gigst.rs/DraMcr -------------------------------------- The simple power of DRAMAs musical expression is matched only by that of their work ethic. Since 2014, the Chicago-based duo have bootstrapped a subtle rise on their own terms, self-releasing several EPs and mapping multiple tours with Midwestern grit. A multicultural collaboration between producer Nael Shehade and vocalist Via Rosa, the project plays to the complementary dynamics of their unlikely pairing, blurring the lines between R&B and dance-pop, heartbreak and bliss. Rosa grew up in a musical household; her parents played in a reggae band, they toured as a family, homeschooling Rosa into her early teens, limiting her listening primarily to Sade, oldies, Brazilian and Afrobeat music. After moving to Chicago, she connected with hip-hop collective THEMPeople. Born in Chicago, Shehade fell in love with DJ culture as a kid and took up music production and engineering; his interest eventually led to professional opportunities, including studio work with Chance the Rapper, Kanye West, and music projects for MTV and Bravo. In early jam sessions the chemistry was clear; Rosas soulful delivery interlocked with Shehades chic Chicago house-infused production style. A lovesick sound emerged over two EPs Gallows in 2016 and Lies After Love in 2018 and caught the ear of Ghostly International. With its founding roots in the Midwest, independent philosophy, and wayward approach to electro-pop and dance music, the label proved to be the logical home for the next era of DRAMA. www.thedramaduo.com www.facebook.com/TheDramaDuo https://soundcloud.com/dramaduo www.twitter.com/thedramaduo www.instagram.com/thedramaduo

DHP Family Proudly Presents... JOHN + Support TBC live at The Deaf Institute, Manchester. Wednesday 29th January 2020. Doors: 7.30pm 14+ Taking the mundane spirit of their name as a manifesto, Crystal Palace based two piece JOHN (both members aptly named John) offer a deadpan approach that has become the recognisable force of their live shows, with an almost mechanical solidity rare for only two bodies. Alongside the rhythmic synchronisation of guitar and drums, introspective lyrics suggest that literature and spoken word are just as important influences as the Punk, Noise and Rock genres they might comfortably fit into. The New Nostalgia // Night & Day Cafe, Manchester

The New Nostalgia return to Manchester to celebrate the release of their new single "Nothing Is New". Full lineup TBC soon. Tickets available on the door. THE NEW NOSTALGIA The reflective and aggressive sound of The New Nostalgia was born on the streets of Amsterdam when four old university friends tried to comprehend the existential haze of their mid-twenties. Stained with echoes of Foals and Gang Of Youths, established Yorkshire songwriter Patrick McCallion, along with James Sands, Sam Bramhall and Charles Adey are storming into 2019, bringing their explosive new live show to smoke filled rooms across Europe. With haunting lyrics that will get under your skin, The New Nostalgia are questioning what it means to be young at heart in a Post-Brexit world. Debut single Fragile Bones is a reflective song about the post-university haze that many twenty-somethings find themselves in. Lead singer Patrick McCallion says Its a song about getting home after an embarrassing night of heavy drinking and having a talk with yourself about life in the bathroom mirror. I think a lot of people in their early twenties start to realise that when their parents were their age they had careers, houses and kids. You realise that youre still essentially living the same way that you did when you were a student and it hits you over the head like a tonne of bricks. For a band so early in their career, The New Nostalgia have wracked up and impressive list of achievements. One week before the release of Fragile Bones, they were shortlisted by NME and DIY Magazine in their unsigned Mad Cool 2019 contest as one of the Top 50 entrants in the UK. They have also headlined a stage at Long Division Festival on a bill that was fronted by Peter Hook & The Light, We Are Scientists and Asian Dub Foundation, as well as performing to packed out rooms across Europe. Their sold out debut show in Amsterdam was met with high praise, What an amazing evening: the birth of a great band gave me goosebumps, the strong voice of the singer, intelligent lyrics, beautiful bass lines and a guitarist who knows how to orchestrate musically... You are going to hear more from these guys, that\'s for sure: welcome to The New Nostalgia! The band are currently working on their debut album, which will be out in 2020. Their highly anticipated second single "Nothing Is New" will be out early in 2020, complete with a full tour in January. #TheNewNostalgia #NothingIsNew

The Monofones / Snakerattlers / Bones Shake / Thee Windom Earles

Down in the belly of The Peer Hat where you find all genuine trash from Abattoir Blues, weve got a huge party lined up for you at the end of January, to beat those blues. Beat it with a stick. Youve got to beat it with a stick. THE MONOFONES are a rumbling drum, a heavily distorted guitar which sounds like a dying tractor and a female voice by which you wouldnt like to be told off. The trio produces loud and wild 60s garage trash which is served with a pinch of punk. MONOFONES live shows are a sweaty & entertaining low-fi inferno of a different kind. SNAKERATTLERS is a Dirty Water Records band, comprising of married couple Dan and Naomi. It\'s a hellbound voyage of trash rock and roll, punk potency and fragments of the oldest, dustiest rockabilly. Those genres combine to make the band\'s own frenzied and furious take on music, known as Rattlerock. The sound of Snakerattlers is acerbic, ruthless, erratic and uncompromising. The band hails from the deepest, darkest depths of ghost-ridden York, in the heart of North Yorkshire, England. BONES SHAKE is a Scuzzed Fuzzed Blues three piece formed in 2011 from Manchester. They play everything into the red; violent bottle neck blues riff, drums kicked, pounded and twatted and squeals of reverb drenched vocals all combine to help save your soul. Since they started, theyve never taken a rest from playing around the UK either as Headliners or supporting bands (Black Lips, King Brothers, Walter Lure, Guitar Wolf,). They have also been in demand in Europe where they have toured numerous times including a tour of prisons in France They have released 4 EPs and 2 LPs so far with a new LP, Sermons, out now. THEE WINDOM EARLES comprise trash garage-punk, greasy rockabilly and exotica surf in a hot dog water cocktail. Their debut album, \'Mai Tai Pink Eye\' laid down in one hot day in July 2018, is a red-eyed testament to the redeeming power of three-chord psychosis and transistor fuzz set to a Benzedrine beat. Expect tales of messy sex, greasy food, shit jobs, girl trouble, boy trouble, single entendres, hair products and, above all, rock and roll salvation. THE RED STAINS We couldn\'t have pulled an amazing bill together without including Manchester\'s hottest new post-punkers who smirch your head, your clothes and just about everything they touch. The Manchester band most likely to inspire a whole generation of guitar-wielding girl groups. Feisty, fun and ferocious, all-female quartet The Red Stains have been kicking up a storm on Manchesters DIY scene with their no-nonsense take on post-punk, glam, new wave and Riot grrrl. Their sound is ramshackle, meandering and determinedly lo-fi but, proving that charm will always overcome technical prowess, its hard not to be seduced by their freewheeling, girl-gang energy. Emanate Audio: Nectax W/Sl8r & Max Baker

After the resounding success of our pilot event, EMANATE AUDIO are bringing NECTAX down to Manchester for what promises to be another huge night of Drum & Bass at CUBO! Line Up: Nectax Sl8r b2b Max Baker olleh_uk K-Bo b2b Decibel illMattic b2b Fingers Nectax has achieved remarkable success in the Drum & Bass scene for someone of his age. Having cemented himself as one of the top names in the North East, his releases on Serial Killaz & Chronic have proven him to be one of the hottest prospects in the genre. With the excellent reception to his release on V Recordings sister-label, Chronic, its easy to see why Nectax has blown up recently. These tracks have had support and resounding reviews from some of the biggest names in the scene: S.P.Y, High Contrast, DJ Marky & Dillinja to name a few. His forthcoming collab with Drum & Bass legend Bladerunner is definitely one to look out for! Were looking forward to a big set from him at CUBO this January... Sl8r is no stranger to the Manchester DnB scene, frequently appearing on line-ups across the city. His catalogue as a producer is even more impressive, with releases on Skankandbass, Chronic as well as one forthcoming on Ray Keiths own Dread Recordings & many more. These tracks have had an excellent reception and received support from the likes of Benny L, Unglued and Kenny Ken. He will be going Back To Back with up and comer Max Baker. Max shutdown CUBO at our pilot event, so its only fair he gets another slot. He continues to go from strength to strength in the scene, and now has a host of label releases including tracks on Incurzion Audio and Bass Legion. With their complementary styles, Sl8r B2B Max Baker is not a set you will want to miss... Support for the night will once again be provided by Emanate Audios own residents, who have been doing the business around Manchester this year. Kokoroko Live At Gorilla, Manchester

KOKOROKO at Gorilla, Manchester Thursday 30th January 2020 London has long been a hotbed for experimentation for music from West Africa, and its into this global-local story that we can situate Londons newest afrobeat innovators: KOKOROKO. In the 40s World War Two veteran Ambrose Campbell and his West African Rhythm Brothers, were enticing Soho music lovers with sweet palm wine sounds. The following decade, a young Fela Kuti (and his Koola Lobitos outfit with drummer Tony Allen), would jam with Campbell, and the seeds for his global Afrobeat revolution were sown. The bands name is an Orobo a Nigerian tribe and language word meaning be strong. Sonically living up to their name, KOKOROKO are an all star band featuring leading lights from the London jazz community. Powered by seismic horn section (Maurice Grey, saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi, trombonist Richie Seivwright), guitar (Oscar Jerome), keys (Yohan Kebede), drums (Ayo Salawu) and percussion (Onome Edgeworth); Kokoroko are on a mission to fashion new languages using the medium of afrobeat. This is not idle music! says Sheila Maurice-Grey, reflecting on the rich history of sounds that have inspired the band. Whether it's the social commentary, the political stance of acts like the Black President, or the high power energy of afrobeat nights: the music is teeming with a potent energy the band want to propel forwards, London style. Make no mistake, this is not a band interested in performative tributes or pastiche. For Maurice Grey, part of the drive behind their creative impulse to is ask: what does this music sound like for my generation? This is a standing show.

Penelope Isles + Francis Lung / Gullivers, Mcr / Thu 30 Jan

Hailing from the Isle of Man via Brighton, Penelope Isles is the collaboration of brother and sister Jack and Lily Wolter. The band mix waves of ambient delays and fuzz guitar noise, sonic dynamics and melodic pop hooks entwined with girl-boy harmonies. Their self-produced home recordings portray an honest lo-fi approach when capturing their own music. Their live set is hypnotic, captivating and moving, smeared with glistening psych, dreamlike chimes, and potency that will transfix and satisfy. After self-producing/releasing their debut EP Comfortably Swell in 2015, Penelope Isles have consistently toured the UK/Europe off their own backs, working with some of the best promoters in the UK. As well as selling out shows both in Brighton and London, the band has opened for The Magic Numbers, Lost Horizons, Walter TV, Airwaves and British Sea Power. Nostalgic, but undeniably new, Penelope Isles debut LP Until The Tide Creeps In was released in March 2019 via Bella Union Records. For the lovers of early Arcade Fire, Grandaddy and Mogwai. Special guest is Francis Lung. Manchesters own Francis Lung, the nom de plume of former Wu Lyf member Tom McClung, releases his new single I Wanna Live In My Dreams. his debut release for Memphis Industries, where he joins the likes of the Go! Team, Polia, Field Music, it comes with a gorgeously intricate self-produced video. Following on from the home-recorded Volumes 1 + 2 EPs, which contained titbits written during his time in Wu Lyf, I Wanna Live In My Dreams sees Francis Lung return with a bigger, more expansive sound. Recorded at Low Four Studios with Brendan Williams (Dutch Uncles, Go Go Penguin) on production duties, its a baroque pop rocket that signals Francis Lungs new-found ambitions. Presents Kill Your Boyfriend & Guests

KILL YOUR BOYFRIEND Kill Your Boyfriend is a two-piece band formed in 2011 in Venice, Italy. (Matteo Scarpa on guitar and vocals, and Antonio Angeli on drums). After spending the last years performing across Europe, opening for The KVB, ZU, Zola Jesus, Civil Civic and many others, the band released their Single "Ulrich" via Other Voices Records, such a perfect follow up for their previous EP "Ghosts"(Shyrec Records). The song comes from the need that each of us has in seeking his own role in modern society. The B-side "Werner" is a slope of EP "Ghosts". It deals with the theme of ghosts generated by past mistakes. They reach you anyway, slowly strangulating you to death. https://www.facebook.com/kyboyfriend/

Man Of Moon - Manchester - Independent Venue Week

Man of Moon are a two piece psychedelic rock band formed in Edinburgh, Scotland. Chris Bainbridge and Michael Reid met in college in 2014 when they formed the band and starting writing and gigging almost instantly after first jamming together in class which led to them dropping out of college to focus completely on the music. In 2015 they released first single The Road on Manchester label Melodic Records which The New York Times said was the best debut single from a UK band since Ceremony by New Order. This gave the band a huge step up in the industry and they started getting impressive support slots with bands such as The Phantom Band, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Frightened Rabbit and more. In 2016 the band released their first EP Medicine on Melodic Records which saw the band embarking on their first UK tour up and down the country and playing major festivals such as T in the Park, Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival and The Great Escape Festival. In 2018 the band went on tour with one of their favourite bands Django Django, the bands biggest tour to date consisting of 20+ shows all over Europe and the UK playing to huge crowds every night. 2019 is the year that Man of Moon have been building up to. The band released EP \'Chemicals\' they are currently on tour with The Twilight Sad and they have recorded their debut album set for release in 2020!

Sam Lee / Night & Day Cafe / Sat 1st Feb

DHP Family present Sam Lee + special guests ------------------------------------ Sam Lee plays a unique role in the British music scene. A highly inventive and original singer, folk song interpreter, a passionate conservationist, committed song collector and a successful creator of live events. Alongside his organisation The Nest Collective and fellow collaborators Sam has shaken up the live music scene breaking the boundaries between folk and contemporary music and the assumed place and way folksong is heard. Hes injected a renewed passion into this old material, helping to develop its ecosystem by not only inviting in a new listenership but also interrogating what the messages in these old songs hold for us today. With his forthcoming album, Old Wow, hes summonsed up a truly compelling and emotional album that takes his work to yet another level. He may not intend to, but Sam Lee always surprises. When he released his first album Ground Of Its Own in 2012, he dared to dramatically re-work old songs by matching his direct and rich singing style against an extraordinary backdrop of sound, making use of anything from Jews harps, trumpets, fiddles, banjo or the drone effects of an Indian Shruti box. This bravely original set made possible by a prestigious Arts Foundation award, set up to support artists at a breakthrough moment in their careers made an immediate impact and the album was short- listed for a Mercury Music Prize. Three years later, Sams second album The Fade In Time saw him break further new ground and receive accompanying accolades including a Songlines Award for artist of the year. This time the backing included cello, ukulele, Japanese koto, willow flute, and, most startling of all, an exquisite acapella treatment of Lovely Molly backed by the massed ranks of the Roundhouse Choir. This song received much attention being performed at the 2016 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards at Londons Royal Albert Hall winning Best Traditional Track and subsequently performed on BBC TVs Later with Jools, NPR\'s Tiny Desk sessions and in 2018 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Proms where Sam hosted a Folk Prom alongside Julie Fowlis. But possibly the largest audience Sam found himself being heard by was when Guy Ritchie chose him to write the lead song for his epic Hollywood fantasy King Arthur: Legend of the Sword from which The Devil and The Huntsman was born receiving tens of millions of plays internationally. And now comes Old Wow, yet another dramatic change of musical direction where, for the first time, Sam includes the instrument most notably absent from his recording career, the guitar and electric guitar at that, played by the albums producer Bernard Butler (of Suede and McAlmont & Butler fame). Sam explains, but only because its played so beautifully and sensitively and you wouldnt necessarily know it was guitar at all. Other musicians involved include what he calls the classic line-up of piano (James Keay), bass (Misha Mullov-Addado) and percussion (Josh Green), along with Caoimhin Raghallaigh of the acclaimed band The Gloaming (on Hardanger violin). Guest vocals are also contributed to the album with a remarkable appearance by Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins, plus splendid harmonies from Cosmo Sheldrake and spoken word poet Dizraeli. Its a thoughtful, soaring and moving set of songs, dominated by Sams soulful and sensitive vocals and no clich in saying its his most assured recording to date. This is no coincidence being an album devoted to his love and passion for the natural world; a commitment that has dominated Sams heart and non-musical practice for many more years than hes been singing. Old Wow has become for Sam an epithet to that quality innate within nature to create wonder and connection. It came to him, he says, while on a vision questing journey on a Scottish mountainside during a time of questioning of what was going on between me and nature, a bit of relationship counselling with an old lover if you like in a moment of existential crisis a buzzard came swooping down and screeched right over my head then circled above me for some while sounding down onto me. At that moment I felt the presence and reassurance of this magical power and suddenly at that moment the name appeared, Old Wow, and Ive held onto it ever since. Many of the album songs deal with that beauty and importance of nature, our wounded relationship to her and the threats brought by the ecological crisis we are just waking up to. With lyrics to traditional songs often re-written or re-imagined with new relevance for today Sam has distilled out of these old songs a new potency and communique, through polished up old wisdoms almost lost, now with a renewed sense of heart and orientation. Unlike many of those in the current folk scene, Sam was brought up in North Londons Kentish Town. He forged a unique love of music and nature when packed off on summer holidays with the children's charity Forest School Camps, where kids of all backgrounds go deep into the wild and sing every night around the campfire. Though his first musical loves were Michael Jackson and Joni Mitchell, once he connected, aged 25, that the songs he sang as a child during those formative summers had older roots in our national heritage I realised I was as free as anyone else to sing these songs, it became an obsession. Through chance circumstance, he formed a close bond with the Scottish singer Stanley Robertson, (nephew of the legendary ballad singer Jeannie Robertson MBE), and was effectively mentored for four years being gifted literally hundreds of songs and the ancient way in how to sing them. After Stanelys death in 2009, he became an avid collector of traditional songs, spending time seeking out the elders of the Gypsy Traveller community recording thousands of songs in England and Ireland from the last generation to sing this repertoire. It is from this unique collection, held within his public digital songcollectors.org archive, that Sam set out through his own albums to highlight the beauty of these songs through unusual and contemporary settings. Sam is, he agrees, a restless workaholic. He may be best known for his unique re-interpretation of traditional songs but is also involved in a staggering array of other projects. As an entrepreneur, he has created new and unusual avenues for a vast range of acoustic musicians, whether established or up and coming, via The Nest Collective and its associated events such as the Campfire Club, the Unamplifire festival, his political & social justice singing Fire Choir and more. He was the first-ever non-North-American board member of the pioneering industry conference Folk Alliance and in the UK sits on the Featured Artist Coalition board alongside Imogen Heap, Radioheads Ed OBrien, Pink Floyds Nick Mason, Blurs Dave Rowntree, and many others. As a broadcaster, he has presented several acclaimed BBC radio documentaries about music in the UK and beyond. Sam has now appeared on stages, festivals, conferences, and gatherings in virtually every corner of the globe singing lecturing and generally being a storyteller and advocate for the things he loves. As a campaigner, Sam has used music to promote his love of the natural world in a typically bold and unexpected way. His annual sell-out Singing With Nightingales immersive experiences now take place across the South-East every spring for 6 weeks and have helped to highlight through song and artistic means the threat to these and other endangered species. He played a key role in the RSPB 2019 campaign to highlight this issue with Let Nature Sing a recording Sam composed entirely of bird song which made it to the top 20 in the UK music charts. Sam is also a founding member of the organisation Music Declares Emergency, in which the UK music industry is convening to acknowledge and address how it can combat the climate and ecological crisis. His close involvement with Extinction Rebellion led to a memorable finale to their two-week International Rebellion in April 2019. Thanks to Sam, nightingales really could be heard in Berkeley Square, at least for one night, as he led a 1500 strong crowd for an evening celebrating the uprising and bring the awareness back to the endangered species and the environment. It culminated in the communal singing of his revised version of A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square while the birds song was streamed through everyone\'s mobile phones in a scene reminiscent of that great musical eco-warrior who went before, Pete Seeger. Yes, Sam plays a unique role in the British music scene. And now, with Old Wow he has re-worked traditional songs to create what he describes as a timeless bridge, music that can be looking both backward and forwards, and a soulful accompaniment to an urgent need to fall back in love with nature if we are to know how to protect it.

Leeched - Manchester, The Deaf Institute

LEECHED celebrate the release of mighty new album, To Dull The Blades Of Your Abuse with an abrasive show on 1st February 2020. Support from GEIST and Tuskar. LEECHED return with their second album, To Dull The Blades Of Your Abuse. If you thought their debut was everything abrasive and cathartic about modern extreme metal, then prepare yourself - theyve taken things up a notch or ten. On their sophomore album, LEECHED prepare to broach uncomfortable topics in a way that is as unflinching as it is emotive. Since the release of You Took The Sun When You Left, LEECHED have honed their craft, embraced a far denser production ethos and have edged much closer to the sound they envisaged when they first formed as a band. By pushing the boundaries of their own comfort zones during the writing and recording, they have created an album that fizzes with discordance and teeters precariously on the precipice of the abyss. The industrial overtones of their debut remain; cold, desolate, inhospitable. The trio have created a seemingly impenetrable exterior of expansive bleakness. Yet underneath the surface there is a white-hot mass of barely controlled aggression, writhing under the scrutiny of their collective creativity. Throughout the album, the lyrics are shot through with anatomical references, lending themselves to creating an ever-more visceral listening experience. Invoking the bleakness of a dystopian landscape, the album confronts topics we are predisposed to shying away from. Dissecting the intimate layers of abuse, and the emotional hinterland where the lines between cause and effect become blurred. Combining extremely personal experiences with a broader commentary on society, as seen through an overtly stark lense, To Dull The Blades Of Your Abuse is uneasy listening; claustrophobic, furious and all-consuming. LEECHED have capitalised on the response to their debut release, playing shows both home and abroad, sharing stages with the likes of Full of Hell, Employed To Serve and Harms Way - delivering their sonic violence purposefully and powerfully. With live shows planned around the release of To Dull The Blades Of Your Abuse, this winter is looking bleaker than ever. To Dull The Blades Of Your Abuse will be released via Prosthetic Records on January 31.

Keep It Unreal: Mr. Scruff & Andrea Trout

The original Manchester residency, 20 years & counting! Mr. Scruff will be rolling up his sleeves for a 5 hour DJ session of jazz, soul, hip hop, funk, disco, deep house, reggae, afrobeat, latin, electro, techno, new wave and plenty of goodies that dont fit into any category. Andrea Trout is taking care of business in a soulful style in room 2 from 9pm-1am. All welcome, regardless of age, nationality, mobility, gender or sexuality. Regulars & first timers getting down together... mixed up music for a lovely mix of people! Please dont use phones on the dancefloor. We ask this because we want the dancefloor to be a place where everyone can be in the moment. If youre tweeting, texting, bidding for a pair of socks on eBay or taking a picture of your friends, youre not only out of the moment, you also might be making it hard for someone else to be in the moment. The bar or balcony is a much better place for this. Be nice to everyone. Tip the lovely bar staff. Say excuse me if you bump into someone. We have reduced the capacity by 50 people to give more space to dance. Use this space to throw some extra special moves. Respect other people\'s space. If someones making you feel uncomfortable in any way, please let Security or someone whos working know. We will try our best to nip it in the bud. We always hold back a few spaces on the door, so do come down early if you don\'t have a ticket. If you have a wheelchair, please let us know in advance (at least a weeks notice is ideal) & we will do our best to reduce the number of tickets on sale to give more room to manoeuvre. Please contact the BOTW operations team on 0161 830 3888 or email info@bandonthewall.org. The same contact should be used if you need to bring a personal assistant. More info on venue accessibility here: https://bandonthewall.org/about/access/ ==== TICKET EXCHANGE ==== We know that sometimes you can\'t make it to a show you\'ve got tickets for. If you would like to pass on your tickets for a sold out show to someone else, we recommend listing them via Twickets, an ethical and secure face value fan-to-fan ticket exchange. If you are looking for tickets to a sold out show, we strongly advise you DO NOT PURCHASE from people you don\'t know online - particularly those advertising spares on Facebook, due to a sharp rise in scammers and touts. Smoke Fairies / Soup Kitchen, Manchester / Sat 1 Feb

Smoke Fairies have announced the release their first album for four years. Darkness Brings The Wonders Home will be released on 31 January, coupled with new tour dates for the band. The first single to be taken from the album, Disconnect, has also been released on all streaming platforms. Jessica and Katherine travelled to Seattle to record Darkness Brings The Wonders Home with producer Phil Ek (The Black Angels, Fleet Foxes, The Shins) and, over the course of a rigorous month-long session in Seattle, adopted a purposely intimate approach to achieving a singular sonic tone. In the making of Darkness Brings The Wonders Home, Smoke Fairies drew inspiration from mysteries both real and imagined: sea monsters, flocks of crows taking flight in extravagant formation, strange creatures dwelling in the mud near their new South London abode. Times of darkness are when people are often the most imaginative, says Jessica Davies in reflecting on the albums title. It helps you to see all the wonders of the world you hadnt noticed before the things youve been blind to because youve been on autopilot for so long. To celebrate the albums release Smoke Fairies have announced a tour starting in Manchester on 1 February. The band dropped new track Out Of The Woods in August and follow it with first single Disconnect. Price: £12 adv

Isobel Campbell: Deaf Institute, Manchester

The main thing with this album was to find my own voice, says Isobel Campbell. A record without reference points. Any influences were sub-conscious. Even if what came up was strange or odd, it was just me. After a prolonged absence and major changes in her life, the Glasgow-born singer-songwriter and cellist has made her freest, finest album yet in There Is No Other, 13 tracks of hook-driven melody across a wide spectrum of subtle, alluring arrangements and moods, from intense to mysterious to carefree, topped by her trademark gorgeous soft-spun voice. One word I had in mind for this record was, psychedelic, Campbell says. A dreamy, otherworldly feel. Take the lead single, Ant Life; shimmering folk-pop with woozy synths over a metronomic pulse with decorative handclaps. Or the forthcoming second single Hey World, a silken southern-soul odyssey that builds to a soaring, gospely climax. Subconsciously or otherwise, each song acknowledges the different paths that Campbell has travelled down the years: the twists and turns, various guises and collaborations. There Is No Other is also a very grown-up record; a life has been lived. Shes not a 19-year old ingnue anymore. That was Campbells age when she first emerged, as a founder member - and inspirational muse - of indie royalty Belle & Sebastian. Going solo in 1999, she called herself The Gentle Waves for two dream-folk albums before two more expansive records under her own name. But its 14 years since her last solo album, and Campbells much better known for the trio of albums (2006-2010) of brooding torchy Americana she made with Americas favourite grizzly crooner Mark Lanegan - a Beauty-and-the-Beast scenario turned on its head since Beauty was calling the shots. Campbell subsequently moved from Glasgow to Los Angeles, got married to studio engineer Chris Szczech and got down to making There Is No Other. But whilst she has fought fiercely to control her own destiny, shes met resistance from outside forces, most notably the label/legal complications that has held up the album for three years.

At the vanguard of industrial metal, the Los Angeles based five-piece have had an uncompromising vision since their inception. From day one, the whole project was intended to be more of a multimedia art project built on the chassis of a band, explains 3TEETH frontman Alexis Mincolla. Being the creative director of downtown LAs infamous tech noir club night known as LIL DEATH, Mincolla regards how this party served as the primordial black ooze that eventually gave way to 3TEETH.

The Lasters Live In Manchester

Fasten your seatbelts. Lemon Jelly producer FRED DEAKIN is back and will be taking audi-ences into the new decade on a very different kind of trip. Marking his return to the live stage with a series of UK dates in 2020, Fred Deakin proudly presents The Lasters. The Lasters is an ambitious new solo project inspired by classic concept albums like The Whos Quadrophenia\' and Jeff Waynes The War of the Worlds. A wholly original and truly out-of-this-world Sci-Fi concept record to rival the best, The Lasters tells the tale of Earths final family. And in the new year, Fred Deakin will be bringing this story to life with a visionary new live pro-duction set to tour around the UK for the very first time. Following a hugely successful Kickstarter that funded the albums one-of-a-kind vinyl run and subsequent digital release, supporters of the campaign were also exclusively granted access to witness the very first The Lasters live shows at two secret gigs in September 2019. Featuring t-shirt tickets and psychedelic visuals aplenty, Fred has drawn on his years of expertise as a designer and interactive artist to create an immersive and thrilling live experience that defies description. In a musical first for the former Lemon Jelly producer, The Lasters has also seen him collaborate with ex-Ash member Charlotte Hatherley as well as newcomers Abi Sinclair and Steffan Huw Davies in addition to adding his own vocals to the album. Pulling out all the stops, the upcoming live shows will feature all four vocalists singing in character amongst projection-mapped animations. A sensory-popping extravaganza that promises to immerse you joyfully into Freds futuristic world, dont miss the very first Fred Deakin Presents The Lasters shows in all their mind-bending glory on UK stages throughout February 2020

Amigo The Devil At The Deaf Institute, Manchester

If youve ever heard a room full of people yelling I hope your husband dies in a some harmoniously sloppy, drunken unison, youve probably stumbled into an Amigo The Devil show. Danny Kiranos, better known to the masses as his musical counterpart Amigo The Devil, has been challenging the expectations of traditional folk, country music purists, and rock/extreme metal fans alike with his morbid, yet oddly romantic, take on folk that has amassed a dedicated and cult like fan-base. Despite being armed with only his vocals and a banjo/acoustic guitar, the live show is worlds away from what people expect of a folk show. Loaded with sing-alongs and an unsuspecting dose of humor to make otherwise grim topics accessible for fans of every genre, the songs remain deeply rooted in the tradition of story-telling that seems to be slipping away from the human condition. Catch him live at Manchester\'s The Deaf Institute Tuesday 4th February 2020. Tickets on sale Wednesday 3rd July 2019.

Nova Twins At Jimmy's Manchester

NOVA TWINS plus guests Nova Twins return with yet another punch-in-your-face-anthem, Vortex. The track bobs and weaves with effortlessly cool swagger, vocal nods to the Queen of Hip-Hop (Missy Elliott), and headbanging basslines and siren guitar riffs (all of which were created with the use of their vast pedal boards no synths here!) . Take a joyride with Nova Twins in their video for Vortex Vortex follows on from the huge success of their previous single Devils Face which received spins from Annie Mac (declared as her New Name) and Sophie K at BBC Radio 1 and was chosen asSingleOfTheWeekbyJohnKennedyatRadioX. Thebandturnedheadswhentheyperformed to packed tents during this summers busy festival season (Boomtown, Download, Hellfest and Nova Rock festivals and a blistering set at this years Heavy Music Awards t o name but a few) and smashed it every night on t our with Prophets Of Rage a cross Europe and the UK. Nova Twins are also the featured artists in the current Dr Martens A/W campaign you may have already spotted them on posters and in stores around the world! Further to this, the duo have just embarked on a short UK tour supporting legends Skunk Anansie, ahead of their headline UK tour later this September (with London and Brighton dates already sold out). When you've never seen yourself in music, theres an opportunity to build something from nothing. To make tracks that dont sound directly like anyone elses. We had to work out our identities within music because we never had a reflection, says Georgia South, Nova Twins bassist. This is a 21st-century take on rock. Its so many things. Singer and guitarist Amy Love adds with a smile, Its the NOVA sound. The strong and unique bass guitar of Georgia South and the incisive vocals of Amy Love, are the driving force of Nova Twins. Devils Face and Vortex showcasing their unique future-rave-rock sound. The duo refuse to conform to any template, fusing bass-heavy grimey punk and taking inspiration from all corners of audio, from bands like N.E.R.D., Betty Davis, Jack White but also Missy Elliott, Princess Nokia and Rihanna, capturing fans of all demographics with their riotous energy. The best friends have turned rock on its head, injecting their songs with boundless energy, barely controlled rage and heavy riffs. The pair, always dressed head-to-toe in designs theyve made themselves, are uniquely genre-bending. Nova Twins use their platform to champion inclusivity and diversity with their high-octane, genre-warping approach. Effortlessly cool in not only their musical output, but in every element of what they do creatively as artists. From designing and making their own outfits for all videos, photoshootsandstageweartotheartdirectionontheirvideos.NovaTwinsa reaboveall, strong, independent and inspiring women. Their modus operandi is to take socio-political experiences from their day-to-day and turn it into something their fans can lose themselves in. David Wax Museum Live At Gullivers

DHP Family Proudly Present... David Wax Museum Live at Gullivers NQ 05/02/20 18+ It's been nearly a dozen years since David Wax and Suz Slezak played their first show together, kicking off a partnership that\'s led to seven records, multiple Top 20 chart placements, performances alongside contemporaries like The Avett Brothers and heroes like Los Lobos, and most importantly a family of four. As that family has grown, so has the band's sound. Filled with husband-and-wife vocal harmonies, Mexican stringed instruments, melodic hooks, and blasts of brass, David Wax Museum's albums fly the worldly flag for a brand of Americana that reaches far beyond American borders. Early in 2018, after honing a new batch of songs on the road, they found themselves making music in the Nashville-based home studio of Carl Broemel (My Morning Jacket\'s, Ray LaMontagne) who produced David Wax Museum's most compelling work to date, Line of Light. Released in 2019 by the Austin-based indie label Nine Mile Records, the album refocuses on the band\'s two co-founders. Weaving the personal with the political, the global with the spiritual, Line of Light chronicles the landscapes and longings that connect us all. Inspired by current events and personal challenges, Line of Light offers its own mix of message and melody. This is honest, heartfelt music about sweeping ideas, anchored in sharp songwriting and uncluttered by heavy-handed studio production. For those who caught one of David Wax Museum\'s earliest shows long before the group stole the show at the Newport Folk Festival, toured alongside Buena Vista Social Club, and earned an audience that's as international as the band's own sound the album feels like a homecoming of sorts, sweetened with contributions from David Wax Museum's full lineup but still grounded in the raw power of the band's two-member core. It's a bright album for murky times, a reminder of music's ability to drive out the darkness, one song at a time.

Pouya: Gorilla, Manchester

Pouya is single-handedly bringing the raw sounds of the underground to the masses. The bubbling Miami rapper, ne Kevin Pouya, entirely embodies the modern underground rap star: born of the internet, bred on the streets, bored of the mainstream hip-hop world and blessed with those magical bars and flows. To this day, Pouya and his Buffet Boys record label remain fully independent and fully in control: He's never released on a major record label or even an indie outside of his own. Its with this dangerous cocktail of skills and life experiences that Pouya has built a rabid fan base, both via loyal URL and IRL followings, and has created an impressive discography of underground anthems and certified chart-toppers.

Olivia Lane / Thu 6 Feb / Night & Day Cafe

DHP Family present Olivia Lane 18+ When artists present the whole picture, you really get to know them. At one moment, country songstress Olivia Lane might gawk flirtatiously at her man in a cheeky chorus worthy of a hashtag. In the next, the Houston-born and Nashville-based singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and performer may pen a verse targeted at mental health struggles. This all-encompassing and no holds-barred pointof-view endears her to both fans and critics alike with widespread praise from Rolling Stone, Taste of Country, Billboard, Music Connection, and more in addition to a cumulative stream tally in excess of 18 million by 2019. A combination of vivacity, vulnerability, and vitality drive her music. When you listen to me, I hope you know its okay to feel everything you need to feel, she explains. Songwriting reminds us its alright to be vulnerableor to sing out loud at a bar! Im inviting you to stay with me for three minutes and be inside those deep emotions, if you need to. I genuinely love what Im doing. I hope you can connect. She started entertaining during her formative years. In order to channel emotions, mom enrolled Olivia in community theater. A part as Jan in Grease proved transformative as she fell in love with music. Stoking that passion, the self-described musical millennial melting pot immersed herself in records by Shania Twain, Trisha Yearwood, Frank Sinatra, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt, and Taylor Swift between learning guitar and piano. In junior year, she convinced her parents to move to Los Angeles inspired by other Texans who made the move like Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez. A songwriting class at USC opened her eyes to the possibilities of telling a personal story in lyrics rather than just playing a part. Upon graduation, she traded the City of Angels for Music City and hustled her way into countless Nashville songwriting sessions. Along the way, she developed a style of her own gleefully steeped in country tradition, rock energy, and hints of pop ambition. The 2015 single Steal Me Away introduced her to audiences followed by You Part 2 and the selftitled Olivia Lane EP a year later. She spent the next couple of years on the road in a van with four dudes, playing every single venue we could. However, in the middle of this whirlwind, she reached a breaking point. My body literally started shutting down on me, she admits. I was unhappy on the road, and my voice was suffering. I just felt like I wasnt getting where I needed to be, so I went back to Nashville and took a break. I got into talk therapy and changed everything around me. I felt like I needed a new chapter and a new beginning. I went back to the raw inclination and right energy of just wanting to be a songwriter. If I didnt know who I was, how could I expect audiences to? So, I got in touch with what I needed to say as an artist. On the other side of this, two years later, I feel like my old self againjust wiser. That brings us to her 2019 EP, The One. Powered by charismatic spirit and confident delivery, the seventrack collection seamlessly blends hummable hooks and delightful twang. She teased out the project with You Got Me, which quickly racked up 1.5 million Spotify streams, and its follow-up Hey 3AM. Meanwhile, the lead-off and single So Good It Hurts hinges on a steady beat and warm synths as it struts towards a guitar-backed fiery and flirty hook, Go on put me in the dirt, he looks so good it hurts. While this self-love and self-awareness journey happened for me, I started dating my boyfriend, she elaborates. Ive known him since I was 15. We went to high school together. I was obsessed with him, but we never dated. We were just super close. Two years ago, he was like, Youre my best friend, I love you, and I want to be with you. Id been so entrenched in all of this vulnerability, I wanted to write a big and fun song describing him with his snapbacks and pearl snaps. Its a strong woman saying shes all about her man! Its almost objectifying him in a playful sense, she grins. Elsewhere, banjo and piano entwine on the inspiring and nostalgic anthem The Cape. The track culminates in the reclamation, Growing up doesnt have to mean I lose the cape of faith and dreamIm taking it back. Having played at Fantazia, Dreamscape, Helter Skelter and countless other milestone events, Slipmatt massively helped to sculpt and develop underground music into what we know and love today. Best known for being one half of SL2 alongside DJ Lime, this mighty duo released countless Breakbeat and Dance hits throughout the early 90s as well as starting up Raw FM. They later went on to found the legendary Awesome Records which boasts releases from some of the biggest names in the history of Jungle and Hardcore. Expect a specially prepared Old Skool Hardcore set! We cant think of a better name to continue the Marathon in fine style. Hyped is an understatement! - Coco Bryce (Myor Massiv) - NL https://soundcloud.com/cocobrycebeats Coco Bryce is without a doubt one of the most anticipated DJs we have had the pleasure of booking thus far. Coco Bryce is just one of several aliases adopted by Dutch DJ, Myor Massiv label boss, and producer, Yoel Bego. He also produces under Chavinski, Light Club, Ill Behaviour, DJ Y, and many more. Although his style is pushing the sounds of new wave jungle and hardcore into the 2020s, he is definitely not new to the game, with productions dating all the way back to the 90s. The releases under his Coco Bryce alias have solidified him as a pillar of the new school jungle and hardcore revolution - hes really one of the artists we have to thank for the genres incredible current evolutions, is a pleasure to have him flying in from Holland! - Footsoldier b2b Kortzer (Loose Lips) http://loose-lips.co.uk/crew Its never happened at a Loose Lips event beforetwo of our residents coming together for a kiss, a fight, and some serious selections!

Tranquil 1st Birthday: Pre-Party

As we all come together to celebrate the first year of Tranquil, we would like to invite a number of artists/brands/friends to take control of Stage & Radio to spin some tunes throughout the day and celebrate the special occasion. Our good friends from FiftyFifty, Carlou and Ziggy, join us again as we continue our regular link ups. It's good to reunite with these dons following their success in Leeds, performing in places such as Mint Warehouse! Samuel Hall finally gets his name on a Tranquil lineup after being front and centre of every party we have thrown. He has had a massive input to the Manchester scene following the re-brand of Utopia Music, who has recently brought Lamache and Floog to the city. James Howard - DJ joins us from Leeds, where he is continuously on the rise with his brand Dimension. We are glad to finally have him over to have him do his usual thing after recently supporting the likes of The Martinez Brothers, Casey Spillman and many more. The PSTW gents have had a massive year between their own gigs, productions and the rise of Lacuna Recordings. It's great to finally have them come to play with us. The Area 808 lads join us on the 8th Feb as the Class of 808. The three dons have had nothing but passion with their events and it has been a pleasure for our residents to play at their parties in the past. A highlight for us was their last event showcasing the Entity London fellas. Cut the Rug have had a crazy year! We first got to know these guys at one of their events and Bagel Shop where they welcomed The Willers Brothers and Casey Spillman. Since then we have featured at one of their parties, so it is a pleasure to have them do their thing for us. Last but not least, we have the Bonsai boys linking up with us again. Following out last collaboration with them, where we brought Josh Baker down to perform, we are delighted to have them on to do their thing at the pre-party! This party is free entry and doors are open from 1pm-9pm.

The Beauty Witch presents USA Nails Hyperstition Duo USA Nails\' adventures often take place in school holidays after they have returned from their respective boarding schools. Each time they meet they get caught up in an adventure, often involving criminals or lost treasure. Sometimes the scene is set close to their home at Kirrin Cottage in Dorset, such as the picturesque Kirrin Island, owned by Steven and his family in Kirrin Bay. In some instances the Nailses go camping in the countryside, on a hike or holiday together elsewhere. The settings, however, are almost always rural and enable them to discover the simple joys of cottages, islands, the English and Welsh countryside and sea shores, as well as an outdoor life of picnics, lemonade, bicycle trips and swimming. The band members are well known for their backstage antics, outrageous clothing, extreme high-heeled boots, heavily applied make-up, and seemingly endless abuse of alcohol and drugs as well. As for their recordings, their mixture of heavy metal and hard rock stylings with influences by AC/DC and Aerosmith and guitar picking style of Judas Priest produced several best-selling albums during the 1980s. Their debut album reached number one on the Billboard 200, and has sold approximately 30 million copies worldwide, including 18 million units in the United States, making it the best-selling debut album of all time in the US. After more than a decade of work and several lineup changes, USA Nails released their long-awaited album sophomore album which, at an estimated $14 million in production costs, is the most expensive rock album to ever be produced in music history and is said to make Bring Me The Horizon\'s latest effort sound like Nick Drake. USA Nails has been credited with reviving the mainstream popularity of corporate rock music, at a time when popular music was dominated by dance music and glam metal. Its late 1980s and early 1990s years have been described as the period in which the group brought forth a "hedonistic rebelliousness", a reputation that had earned the group the nickname \'the most dangerous band in the world\'."

The Vegan Leather | Manchester, Gullivers

Beyond the rich Scottish tradition of post-punk and angular pop that threads from Orange Juice through to Franz Ferdinand, The Vegan Leather wear their more electronic influences on their sleeves. Soulwax, Metronomy, LCD Soundsystem have been listed as sources of inspiration by the band, as have acts as diverse as Kraftwerk, Nine Inch Nails and Chaka Khan. Regardless of personal heroes, the Paisley band have forged their own path to creating infectious pop melodies that retain razor-sharp cultural insight. Goodness: Minor Science, Oli XL, Izzy Bolt

GOODNESS 08.02 SOUP KITCHEN, M1 1DF Minor Science [Whities, The Trilogy Tapes] Oli XL [Bloom, W I] Izzy Bolt [VAM, Limbo Radio] ------------------ Making a name for himself as a producer through some excellent releases on Whities and The Trilogy Tapes, Minor Science\'s intricate, hi-tech sound is one of the most distinctive of recent times. A stylistic hybrid between the old UKG, dubstep, and other strands of UK dance music heritage and the new, detailed, and innovative, he is one of the most interesting producer-DJs around at the moment, and our favourite guest to host. Stockholm-based DJ and sound artist Oli XL is one of the most interesting young producers pushing next gen, high-concept club music in and around Europe. Citing the likes of Actress, M.E.S.H., Flying Lotus, and Laurel Halo as key players in the development of his sound, hes just on the back of a debut album released in summer this year on his own Bloom imprint which is well worth your time. Look out for much more of him in the future! Manchester-based multi-disciplinary artist Izzy Bolt joins us again to complete the bill. With a style that exists at the interface between electronic music and digital art, recent months have seen her provide visuals for The Warehouse Project via High Snobiety as well as a number of other UK club nights on top of her usual output for VAM, Drift_MCR and Limbo Radio. ------------------ Soup Kitchen 31-33 Spear St Manchester M1 1DF Tickets ~ 8-12 via RA More OTD Videography by Jashan Walton. The Calling - Manchester

Born and raised in the wild jungle of Hollywood, California, frontman and founding member of The Calling, Alex Band, first discovered his love for singing and songwriting at the age of 5 and was signed with RCA Records by age 15. In 2001, the stars aligned and The Calling was born, exploding onto the airwaves with their smash hit, 'Wherever You Will Go', which reached the top of the charts and stayed there for a record 23 weeks straight. Through years of hard work and touring every inch of the planet, The Calling found global success and the best fans in the world. Seven #1 songs worldwide and over 20 million albums sold, the song that started it all, Wherever You Will Go was named the #1 Song Of The Decade and the #3 Adult Pop Song of All Time by Billboard Magazine. Wherever You Will Go has been featured in a number of movies and TV shows including Love Actually, Coyote Ugly, Smallville and Kate and Leopold. The Calling's debut album, Camino Palmero, was a true international hit, becoming Certified Gold and/or Platinum in over 40 countries. Before releasing their next album, Band was given the opportunity to work with guitar legend, Carlos Santana, and sing the huge hit Why Dont You and I' which has been named the #5 Song Of The Decade and the #20 Adult Pop Song Of All Time by Billboard. The Callings second album, Two, found its groove internationally, going #1 in the UK, Japan, Brazil and Canada. Twos lead single, Our Lives was featured in the closing ceremonies of the 2004 Summer Olympics and was also the opening song of the 78th Academy Awards in 2005. Alex took a hiatus after touring for Two to care for an ailing family member and navigate an ever-changing music industry. Band never gave up though, he pushed forward, writing and producing his first solo album with the first single, Tonight, becoming the theme song for the 2011 World Cup. Alex has been pushing forward ever since, never giving up on himself or his music and is currently ready with a new album that is promised to be his most diverse collection to date.

Wheel At The Deaf Institute

Looking back through history, the best music has always been born of brave acts of courage. Its something Wheel frontman James Lascelles knows more than most, having relocated over a thousand miles from England to Finland to pursue music as a career. After meeting some like minded musicians in Helsinki namely bassist Mikko Maatta, drummer Santeri Saksala and guitarist Saku Mattila, eventually replaced by Roni Seppanen Wheel was born.
