Loneliness: A Modern Epidemic?

Are we facing a loneliness epidemic? What does it actually mean to be lonely? Is it purely an emotional state, or something much deeper than that? Join Dr Fay Alberti - co-founder of the Centre for the History of Emotions at QMU - for a thought provoking talk on the cause, effect & history of loneliness.

Loneliness has become a modern 'epidemic', apparently ubiquitous, universal and linked to mental and physical disease. Amidst political and social concern, the UK has elected a Minister for Loneliness, and other nations are set to do the same.

However there has been little discussion of what loneliness actually means. And for whom. Like other emotional states, loneliness has a complex political, economic, social and medical history, which has been overlooked.

This talk looks at the making of loneliness as a medical, social and emotional experience. Rather than being universal or inevitable, it argues, loneliness is a direct result of modern ways of thinking and behaving. And we need a much wider historical lens - one which views loneliness less as individual and psychological, than as bodily and social - to unmake a modern epidemic.

Venue: Ninety One, Brick Lane
Doors: 7pm / Talk starts: 7.30pm.
