From the anarchic chords that open his First Symphony, Beethovens symphonies are more than just music: theyre acts of revolution.
The very opening chord of the First Symphony, which is such a shock, is Beethoven announcing himself, says Eliot Gardiner. Hes saying, 'I am here and I have something special to say!'.
Theres only one way to begin this journey, after all, and its apt that Gardiner has coupled the symphony with a rare performance of the complete music to ballet The Creatures of Prometheus: the story of the very first human to defy the gods and become a creator in his own right.
