The Heart Is Where The Battle Is: A Celebration Of Sivanandan

Join us for an afternoon celebrating the life and work of A. Sivanandan, one of the most important and influential black anti-racist thinker-activists in the UK. Bringing together tributes, remembrances, music, discussion, poetry and film, we will trace his political legacy in the UK and internationally. His concerns, with what racism does, what imperialism does, what globalisation does and how we can fight back, take on a renewed urgency now. Contributors include: Gary Younge (The Guardian) Linton Kwesi-Johnson (Poet) Nancy Murray (Former director of education ACLU Mass. USA) Colin Prescod (Chair IRR) David Edgar (Playwright) Suresh Grover (The Monitoring Group) Liz Fekete (Director IRR) Register for free tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-heart-is-where-the-battle-is-a-celebration-of-sivanandans-legacy-tickets-43881430540?aff=eac2 Siva was born in Colombo and left the anti-Tamil riots, in the then colonial Ceylon (Sri Lanka), in 1958 and then walked into the anti-black riots in Notting Hill. His work and activism always came from the vantage point of the most vulnerable and explored the links of racism with colonialism, capitalism and imperial history. These forces shaped his politics, his poetry of language and thought, and his embrace of dialectical materialism. He was director of the Institute of Race Relations 1973-2013 and founding editor of the international journal Race & Class. His political interventions - including on Black as a political colour, Race, class and the state, From resistance to rebellion: Asian and Afro-Caribbean struggles in Britain, The hokum of New Times, The personal and the political, Imperialism and disorganic development in the silicon age, Sri Lanka: racism and the authoritarian state - have been included in a number of anthologies. His novel on Sri Lanka, When Memory Dies won the Sagittarius Prize and was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers Prize.

SC&P LIVE: Essaie Pas + More Tba

https://www.facebook.com/essaiepas https://essaiepas.bandcamp.com https://soundcloud.com/essaiepas Montreal-based electronic duo Essaie pas is comprised of Marie Davidson and Pierre Guerineau. Both are respected musicians in their own right - Marie having released two acclaimed solo records, with Pierre being best known for production work on underground Canandian musicians such as Dirty Beaches and Femminelli. Essaie pas was born on a hot summer night in 2010, releasing some ultra-limited singles which culminated in their debut LP, Nuit de noce (Teenage Menopause Records) in 2013. The mix of drawling guitars, franais mumbles, and minimal electronics caught the ear of DFA Records, who booked the pair to open for Factory Floor on their first North American tour. The origin story of Demain est une autre nuit begins when the band returned from their first European tour to find that their practice space and studio, La Brique, had fallen victim to the citys rapid gentrification and closed permanently. Conflicts with their landlord had also left them without an apartment, leading them to return to Montreal in January without many prospects. They lucked into a temporary practice space during off-hours at the offices of Le Filles Electriques, an independent music fesitval promoter. This space soon became Pierres new studio, and Maries new home. The many corridors of the building also provided a way for Marie to work out in the frigid Montreal winters, running everywhere possible, listening to techno, acid, and italo disco, being mutually inspired by the space and the sounds. About eight months later, Demain est une autre nuit (tomorrow is another night) was born. This environment influenced our music, says Pierre, The sounds are more clear and open, the production has more depth, on a full frequency range. Their living conditions on tour were another major influence, Staying at different peoples places around for world for a whole year accentuates the feeling of being a stranger wherever you go, but also creates a feeling of being part of an international community, opposed to a scene that exists only in one city.

Cubafrobeat And Friends Present: A Guide To AfroCubism

Two of London\'s finest Cuban/Afro collectives team up for a night that celebrates the cross-pollination of two of the world\'s most enduring musical styles. Through the vast movement of people and culture from Africa to the Caribbean, the rhythms and melodies of Africa were transposed onto a new culture. This relationship was symbiotic, Cuban music becoming a la mode in Western African and starting a whole new musical relationship of mutual assimilation that has spanned decades, and from Buena Vista Social Club to Orchestra Baobab, has resulted in some of the most compelling music in the world. Cubafrobeat is a groove train, travelling between Havana, Cuba and Lagos, Nigeria fuelled by a London sensibility and utilising the talents of UKs top Cuban and Afrobeat specialists An inspired musical conversation between two sides of the Atlantic. Afrospot is all about the joyous sounds of Highlife, the indigenous authentic dance music of West Africa throughout the whole nineties. Led by charismatic Kodjovi Kush, creator and a world number one interpreter of Agbajazz, the fusion of Agbadja, the traditional music and dance from the Ewe tribe (Togo, Ghana, Benin), its rhythms and time signatures with jazz, Cuban and reggae influences. Guitars shine, horns sing, bass and percussion blaze in a true band of all-stars, music ambassador extraordinaire.
