Flook

Taking inspiration from their roots in the Irish and English traditions, Flook have an enviable trademark sound, weaving and spinning traditionally rooted tunes over precise acoustic grooves, with a rare blend of fiery technical brilliance, delicate ensemble interaction and a bold, adventurous musical imagination. There is certainly no shortage of virtuosity amongst the members of Flook, but the unique impact of this band stems from the wholly intuitive, almost symbiotic, exchange between the various flutes, frets and skins. Twenty five years after their first gig together, Flook continue to inspire and enchant audiences of all ages. With their new album ‘Ancora’ out in 2019, it’s plain to see that, with their roots firmly anchored in the tradition, Flook are holding fast to their reputation as major musical innovators. Brian Finnegan – whistles and flutes Sarah Allen – flutes and accordion Ed Boyd – guitar John Joe Kelly – bodhrán “Iconic, ground-breaking, progressive and all-round brilliant” Lynette Fay, BBC Ulster “In the pantheon of Irish/English folk groups they don’t come much more revered than Flook” Irish Music Magazine “In the US, their reputation borders on the Messianic …” Irish Music Magazine ” Head and shoulders above the rest… Magnificent” The Irish Times “A sensational live act…. in the front rank of the innovators” The Rough Guide to Irish Music

Martin And Eliza Carthy

The good Doctor Martin Carthy and his twice Mercury nominated daughter Eliza Carthy, join forces to perform songs from their first duo album ever, a CD of traditional material entitled THE ELEPHANT, released in May 2014 on Topic Records. Nominated ‘Best Album’ BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award – BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2014 Martin is a legendary ballad singer and guitarist who has influenced a generations of artists, including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, while Eliza has been twice-nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and a multiple-award winner at the BBC Radio Two Folk awards. For more than 50 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music’s greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also far beyond it. Trailblazing musical partnerships with, amongst others, Steeleye Span, Dave Swarbrick and his award-winning wife (Norma Waterson) and daughter Eliza Carthy have resulted in more than 40 albums, but Martin has only recorded 10 solo albums, of which the much anticipated Waiting for Angels (Topic TSCD527) was the latest. Whether in the folk clubs (which he continues to champion), on the concert stage or making TV appearances (he was the subject of the acclaimed `Originals’ music documentary strand on BBC 2) – there are few roles that Martin Carthy hasn’t played. He’s a ballad singer, a ground-breaking acoustic and electric-guitarist and an authoritative interpreter of newly composed material. He always prefers to follow an insatiable musical curiosity rather than cash in on his unrivalled position. Perhaps, most significant of all, are his settings of traditional songs with guitar, which have influenced a generation of artists, including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, on both sides of the Atlantic. `Arguably the greatest English folk song performer, writer, collector and editor of them all’ Q Magazine Eliza Carthy is undoubtedly one of the most impressive and engaging performers of her generation. Twice nominated for the Mercury Prize and winner of innumerable other accolades over a 20 year career, Eliza has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists including, Paul Weller, Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Patrick Wolf and Bob Neuwirth. More than most, Eliza Carthy has revitalised folk music and captured the most hardened of dissenters with intelligent, charismatic and boundary-crossing performance. Eliza grew up immersed in the world of traditional music. She still divides her time between touring and recording with her legendary parents, Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson as well as engaging in numerous pioneering solo and band projects, including work with Pere Ubu and Melanie Challenger, an artist in residence in Antarctica. In what has become something of a parallel career, Eliza has co-presented the BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards, been a regular guest-presenter on the BBC Radio 2 Mark Radcliffe Show and has made many appearances on BBC TVs ‘Later with Jools’. In her own right, Eliza has been the subject of an hour long ITV documentary (‘Heaven & Earth’) and ‘My Music’ on Channel 5. Comedian and writer Stewart Lee describes Eliza as “Not the Messiah, but a very naughty girl”. ’Eliza Carthy is one of the figureheads of the English folk revival … compelling’ – Evening Standard ‘A gloriously natural singer’ – Q magazine ‘Seriously impressive’ – Telegraph ‘…brave and anything but predictable’ **** 4 Stars The Guardian

Ranagri

‘When the faces of one hundred plus people leaving a concert are, without exception, beaming from ear to ear, with many eagerly clutching their newly purchased and signed CDs, it stands a good chance that the evening has been a successful one. Such was the case last night as Ranagri made a triumphant return to St. Edith Hall’. David Pratt FATEA Magazine ***** Alt folk band Ranagri are 4 Irish and English musicians; combining Voices, Guitar, Bouzouki, Flutes, Whistles, Harp/Electric Harp, Bodhrán/Drums.  Since forming, Ranagri have recorded three studio albums at Grammy Award Winning Record Label Stockfisch Records, with their latest record ‘Playing For Luck’ released in 2019. Acclaimed previous albums are ‘Fort of the Hare’. ‘The Great Irish Songbook’ with pop legend Tony Christie, ‘VOICES’ – recorded at Real World Studios and produced by Grammy-nominated producer Graeme Pleeth, and ‘Tradition’, which were both released on Goatskin Records. Festival performances include Cambridge, Gate to Southwell, Wath, Lyme Folk Weekend, Trinity, Bloom (Dublin) and Purbeck. No strangers to large venues, Ranagri have performed at Birmingham Symphony Hall, Fairfield Halls, The Union Chapel, Buxton Opera House and Camac Harp Festival in France to name a few. Combining their love for world music, they have collaborated with top Indian musician Kuljit Bhamra OBE, and members of Britten Sinfonia at The Bhavan Centre, London. Touring with Justin Currie (of Del Amitri) at Islington Assembly Hall, Perth Concert Hall, Holmfirth Picturedrome and Cambridge Junction, followed by a tour of Scotland and Germany saw Ranagri writing & recording ‘Playing For Luck’ released in 2019 2020 – a very testing year for all, with the cancellation of tours in both Britain and Europe. Ranagri bunker down in the studio to write and record their next album TRADITION II, due for release in November 2021

Jesus Jones - Doubt Tour

2021 will mark 30 years since Jesus Jones released their number 1 album “Doubt” and to celebrate it they will be touring and playing the album in it’s entirety Their first album, 1989’s“Liquidizer” with its singles “Never Enough” and “Info Freako” saw them selling over 80,000 copies and obtaining their first silver disc, It led to them touring the UK and Europe, wowing critics and fans with a high-energy live show that was to become the band’s trademark. Within a year, things really started to happen. When it was first released, at the start of 1991, their second album “Doubt” quickly became a phenomenon. It entered the UK charts at number one and gave the band their first gold disc. It would also see massive sales around the world, including Canada (where it went platinum), as well as Japan and Australia. However, perhaps the album’s greatest success was in the US, where it went platinum, selling well in excess of a million copies. This was driven by the single “Right Here, Right Now”, which was a huge MTV hit (it was, at the time, the longest-running video on their playlist, ever). The single reached number one, and still remains an anthem to this day. The album also spawned a number of other huge worldwide hits, including “International Bright Young Thing”, and “Who? Where? Why?”. The band were awarded an MTV award for “Best New Artist”, as well as being nominated for a Grammy.

Max O'Connor

Maz O’Connor grew up in the wild Lake District of the Romantic Poets, studied literature at Cambridge and is now settled in East London. Her roots are in Ireland, where her grandparents hail from, and all of these diverse influences work together to make her songwriting something unique. Her exceptional voice provides the perfect vehicle for her powerful songs. Maz spent her teenage years singing in folk clubs, and in 2014 was the recipient of a BBC Performing Arts Fund Fellowship (Adele was a previous recipient) which paired her as an emerging artist in residence with The English Folk Dance and Song Society. During this year she wrote, recorded and released her album ‘This Willowed Light’, which earned her a nomination for the BBC Radio 2 Folk Horizon Award and appearances at high profile festivals such as Cambridge Folk Festival, WOMAD and Glastonbury. The Guardian called it ‘folk album of the year thus far’. Maz began to explore her own songwriting further, addressing themes of Millennial angst in her second album ‘The Longing Kind’, about which Songlines wrote: ‘There is an inquiring intelligence as well as an emotional sensibility at work here…she plays and sings beautifully *****’. She toured the U.K. and Europe, including opening for such artists as David Gray, Thomas Dybdahl and Rosanne Cash. An EP of cover songs ‘The Undercover EP’ followed, a collection of some of her favourite songs by other artists, from Bob Dylan to Louis Armstrong, via Greenday. Accompanying shows included appearances at Henley Festival and How the Light Gets In, and a packed London’s Kings Place. Alongside her own performances, Maz is also busy as a songwriter for special projects, commissions and theatre. She has been commissioned to write songs for UK Parliament and The Royal Shakespeare Company, and is now working on her own piece of music theatre. Her background in folk continues to inform her storytelling and feminist themes are a constant in her work: from the song ‘Derby Day’, which she was commissioned to write about Emily Wilding Davison and the feminist re-telling of the creation myth ‘Mississippi Woman’ (both on her first album ‘This Willowed Light’), to the songs giving voice to women in portraits who have been silenced as muses (on her second album ‘The Longing Kind’). She considers new album ‘Chosen Daughter’ – a collection of darker, story songs – a bigger, more concentrated feminist statement. It is not protest music, but a very personal album which explores, and celebrates, the feminine. St. David's Day With Mal Pope

Mal Pope was born in Brynhyfryd, Swansea in May 1960. There was always plenty of music in the house with either Mal’s mum or grandmother playing the piano. Mal’s grandmother, Myfanwy, was only just over 5 foot tall but she was a very accomplished organist. One of Mal’s earliest musical memories is watching her feet dancing over the pedals as she practiced for some big church event or another. In fact the chapel and gospel music would play a very big part in Mal’s musical development. His great grandfather had been the conductor of one of the local chapel orchestras around the turn of the last century and had made quite an impact as a hymn writer. Life was to change in 1967 when Mal’s eldest brother David went on a school trip to Spain and came back with a guitar. Mal would borrow it when his big brother wasn’t there and inspired by David’s record collection (Cat Stevens, Simon & Garfunkel, Donovan) he would try to play it. Two years later he had started to write his own songs. From these early childhood memories growing up in Wales to the days he spent recording with Elton John at Abbey Road, to the musicals like Cappuccino Girls and Amazing Grace that have sold out theatres across the country. He’ll be telling stories about the years spent touring the world with Art Garfunkel and Belinda Carlisle as well as sharing what it was like to produce and write the music for the film ‘Jack to a King’. This intimate performance will feature songs Mal has written for artists like Cliff Richard and the Hollies and the duets he has recorded with Bonnie Tyler and Aled Jones. So why not join Mal on this very special occasion – you might even get a chance to ask Mal some questions about the stories behind the songs and his love for Wales!

Trials Of Cato

Formed in Beirut, the band returned to the UK in 2016 and set to performing tirelessly up and down the country, leading to BBC Radio 2’s Mark Radcliffe hailing them as “one of the real discoveries on the folk circuit in recent times.” Their debut album, Hide and Hair, gained attention in national publications, receives repeated national airplay on BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music, and won Best Album at the 2019 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Following a year of wall-to-wall touring across the UK, Europe, and North America in 2019, the band’s march was halted by the live silence of the global pandemic. Now, they emerge from their chrysalis transformed. As ever, ‘The Trials Continue’ – but this time the multi- talented instrumentalist and singer Polly Bolton joins their ranks. The Trials of Cato’s hotly anticipated second album is scheduled for release later this year. Entitled Gog Magog, the album is named both after the mythical giant of Arthurian legend and the Cambridgeshire hilltop, where the new album was birthed over lockdown.

Morganway

We welcome back to Acapela the brilliant Morganway. If you caught their concert just before lockdown you will not want to miss their return. Striking six-part harmonies, energetic rhythms, catchy songs and a fiercely formidable live act – Morganway have made quite the impression on the UK’s rising Americana scene. Part country, part rock, with sprinklings of folk and something else entirely, it’s not easy categorising the band’s “delightfully unconventional sound” (Desperately Lost City). Founded by twin brothers Callum and Kieran Morgan, the shared lead vocals of Callum and SJ Mortimer, along with the band’s love of ‘70s west coast rock, has drawn comparisons to Fleetwood Mac. SJ’s powerhouse voice is at the centre, part-angel, part-banshee, while Nicole Terry’s stomping fiddle creates darker, folkier undercurrents coupled with Kieran’s distinctive guitar sound. Matt Brocklehurst (keys) and ‘Steady’ Eddy (drums) complete the lineup. They released their self-titled debut album in August 2019 to widespread acclaim. With a summer of festivals including Glastonbury, Black Deer and Millport Country festival, sell-out shows in London, a national tour with CC Smugglers and a British Country Music Award Nomination for UK Band of the Year; Morganway have caught the attention of Whispering Bob, and were described by Maverick Magazine as “One of the best and most exciting prospects to emerge in a long time.” The unforeseeable Coronavirus pandemic saw the band take a step away from the live scene to focus on writing. Now with new music and shows on the horizon, 2021 promises to be the next exciting chapter for Morganway. “One of the best and most exciting prospects to emerge in a long time” – Maverick Magazine “Takes the breath away” – RnR Magazine

Peatbog Faeries

Following their sell out concert at Acapela last year, we welcome back the incredible Peatbog Faeries. “Nothing prepares you for the high octane music of the Peatbog Faeries. Powerful melodies are dextrously pumped out with a smart degree of techno attitude, while cross-rhythms ricochet over a heavy bass that hits you forcefully like a massive heart beat.” The Scotsman Hailing from the Isle of Skye, the legendary Scottish trailblazers have created a glorious mixture of traditional sounds and dance-floor grooves that have been embraced worldwide. Drawing upon a dazzling myriad of influences from jigs and reels through Dance Music, Jazz, African, and more, they bring the sound of Scotland fresh-faced and breathless to the new audiences around the world. Their mainly instrumental music allows the band to develop exciting themes and soundscapes, as well as locking into their trademark hypnotic ‘Celtic Dance’ sound that no-one can resist moving to! From the moment they take to the stage, the mood is set for a no-nonsense feel-good atmosphere –each number sounding like an encore itself. They tease unlikely combinations from the familiarity of instruments such as fiddle and highland pipes –blending with techno rhythms and soaring sounds and take this to another plane.  The traditional styles that influence the musicians are still to be heard – and when an unexpected drop-down to those glorious core melodies sneaks in -the result is spine-chilling! In short, it rocks-and the audience becomes part of the experience. The band is made up of Peter Morrison fronting on pipes and whistles that interplay with the amazing fiddle sounds from Ross Couper. Guitarist Tom Salter provides all that his instrument is capable of from subtle licks and chord patterns to crowd-pleasing solos. The flux of Graeme Stafford’s keyboards cannot be understated as they swirl and zip through the backline machine of Innes Hutton on pounding bass and Stuart Haikney on drums that hold it all together with style. Peatbog Faeries have become firm favourites at festivals and venues across the UK – and have toured the world with their inventive and unique brand of music never failing to fill the floor and delight crowds. “Gloriously unpredictable, a band to treasure”.   fRoots

Hue And Cry

Hue and Cry return to Acapela Studio for what will be another great sell out concert. Brothers Patrick and Gregory Kane formed Hue and Cry in 1983 and the duo made a huge impact in the late 80’s with the albums ‘Seduced and Abandoned’ and ‘Remote’ as well as massive hit singles such as ‘Labour of Love.’ Albums like ‘Stars Crash Down’ and ‘Jazz Not Jazz’ ensured Hue and Cry’s continued triumph in the 1990’s, whilst the release of the hugely applauded ‘Open Soul’ in 2008 brought them firmly back into the limelight. The release of their seasonal album ‘Xmasday’ (2009) and live album ‘Bitter Suite Again’ (2010), preceded the release of ‘Hot Wire’ (2012) which received rave reviews. To date Hue and Cry have sold in excess of two million records worldwide. 2014 signalled the 25th anniversary of the seminal Hue and Cry album ‘Remote’, released to not only huge acclaim but to multi-platinum success, spawning the singles ‘Ordinary Angel’, ‘Violently’ and ‘Looking for Linda’. To mark this Hue and Cry released ‘Remote: Major to Minor’ a multi-media celebration of ‘Remote’ which comes as a limited edition 48 paged book containing four discs, including a re-worked and re-imagined version of the original album. In 2015 the brothers returned to the live scene with both their stripped format and full live band. 2015 also marked the centenary of Frank Sinatra’s birth, an artist whose career has been a huge influence on Pat and Greg’s musical style. To celebrate they recorded ‘September Songs’ a covers album dedicated to the original ‘Chairman of the Board’. 2016 was a busy year for the band, especially on the live scene with performances throughout the UK. The duo embarked on a winter tour with Paul Young and were invited to join Bros singer Matt Goss on two dates of his solo Christmas Tour. To end the year on a high the band were special guests as part of BBC One Scotland’s live television broadcast for Hogmanay. Pat and Greg along with their full band played a selection of their hits in front of a studio audience to help presenter Jackie Bird count down to the new year. In 2017 the band released their long awaited twelfth studio album Pocketful Of Stones to critical acclaim, gaining 4/5 stars in both the Sunday Express and The Scotsman. They followed this up with a successful Scottish tour and special one-off show in London. Hue and Cry have garnered a wealth of publicity throughout their career and most recently with notable TV, Radio and Press outlets such as Lorraine (ITV); The Wright Stuff (Channel 5); Vintage TV; The Quay Sessions (BBC Scotland); Robert Elms (BBC London); Phil Williams (BBC Radio 5 Live); The Herald, The Daily Record, Record Collector, Classic Pop; Mail On Sunday and Songwriting Magazine. The band have sold tens of thousands of concert tickets worldwide, as well as performing alongside some of the greatest artists in music history, appearing with U2, James Brown, Madonna, Al Green and Van Morrison to name but a few. The duo was recognised by their peers when they were presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Scottish Music Awards.

Paul Potts

The Welsh-residing tenor, for whom singing has always been a haven and a source of joy, is living his dream. Bullied and taunted at school, singing in his local church choir proved to be a sanctuary from the playground abuse. Listening to La Boheme, aged 16, Paul fell in love with opera, a romance that was to set him on a turbulent journey that would eventually lead to him performing on, and winning, the first series of Britain’s Got Talent in 2007. Truly a life-changing event, he released his debut album ‘One Chance’ that year, topped the charts in 13 countries, appeared on Oprah (twice), brought Times Square to a standstill, announced a global arena tour and became a household name in cities from Seoul to New York and Sydney to Hamburg. Paul’s story has since inspired the Hollywood film ‘One Chance’ starring James Corden in the lead role and Paul wrote the accompanying autobiography. But the story doesn’t end there. Paul is constantly touring, having now performed nearly 1,000 times across 44 countries. Since Paul’s BGT win and subsequent ‘One Chance’ album, he has released a further six studio albums; 2009’s ‘Passione’, 2010’s ‘Cinema Paradiso’ and ‘Home’ in 2014, ‘On Stage in 2017 and ‘Winter Dreams’ in 2018 as well as a Greatest Hits collection in 2013. Paul recently appeared on America’s Got Talent: The Champions where he made it to the Grand Final beating out other previous Got Talent winners from around the world. 2019 was a busy year for Paul with concerts and tours in South Korea, Japan, Scandinavia, Germany, the UK and Wales.

A Flock Of Seagulls

A Flock of Seagulls was started by Mike Score and his brother Ali in 1979 in Liverpool. Mike played keyboards, guitar, and vocals, Ali played drums and their friend Frank Maudsley played bass. The band took their name from a line in the song “Toiler on the Sea” by The Stranglers, which appears on their album Black and White. The group released an EP and a couple of singles, Its Not Me Talking and Telecommunication on Bill Nelson’s ‘Cocteau’ label; both tracks produced by Nelson. In 1982 the group’s third single, produced by Mike Howlett, I Ran (So Far Away) became a worldwide hit, most notably reaching number 1 in Australia and the top 10 in the US and New Zealand (where the band became incredibly popular). The parent album A Flock of Seagulls and another single Space Age Love Song were also successful. In late 1982 the band found major success in the UK with Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)  which reached the top 10. The band is regarded as breaking the ground for other musical acts during the advent of the video music area. 1983 saw the release of three singles to back their second album Listen.  The album bore a heavily processed electronic sound that was a break from the Duran Duran guitar and bass driven sound of their début. The group produced a third album in 1984 that leant closer to a guitar sound. The More You Live, the More You Love was The Story of a Young Heart’s lead single. In November 2003, the original line-up (Mike and Ali Score, Paul Reynolds and Frank Maudsley) reunited for a one-off performance on the VH1 series, Bands Reunited. In September 2004, they reformed again and played a small number of live shows in the United States, but broke up immediately afterward. Mike Score continues to tour with other musicians as A Flock Of Seagulls. The band is now recognized as a pioneering act, capturing the zeitgeist of their time, particularly with multi-layered hits such as Space Age Love Song, Telecommunication and Modern Love is Automatic. Support from Head Noise Head Noise are a New Wave Electro Art-Punk band from the South Wales Valleys. The band formed in 2016 and are beginning to pick up a dedicated fan-base through their entertaining, funny and often surreal live performances. The band have also been lucky to support bands in the past such as: Wolf Alice, Public Service Broadcasting, Art Brut, !!!, John Otway and Electric Six.

The Hooten Hallers

Listeners often detect hints of George Thorogood, Morphine, and Tom Waits, but anyone who has seen The Hooten Hallers live knows that this power trio is unlike anything they’ve experienced before. John Randall’s demonically-tinged vocals and manic guitar, and Andy Rehm’s screaming falsetto vocals and steady, pounding drum beat keep the band focused on their unique blend of deep blues and country punk. Kellie Everett brings the power with the deep rumble of her baritone and bass saxophones. When The Hooten Hallers come to town, you know it’s gonna be a party! Columbia, Missouri trio The Hooten Hallers are a high-energy blues-rock band known for hard-traveling and wild live shows, with a seemingly endless tour schedule. The myriad of influences in their music incorporates elements of rhythm & blues, rock’n’roll, honky tonk, jazz, soul, and punk with a thematic penchant for the strange and the unexplained. Their live shows take the listener on a seamless ride from unapologetically raucous blues on the lap steel and bass sax, to a sweet three part harmony country ballad, to a romping dance number. 2017’s self-titled album ‘The Hooten Hallers’ on Big Muddy Records, is the culmination of their experiences from a decade of performing and traveling together. They’ve injected the album with the stories and characters they’ve encountered over many years and miles. Produced by Johnny Walker (Soledad Brothers, All Seeing Eyes) and Kristo Baricevic (Big Muddy Records), the Hooten Hallers’ latest effort showcases their evolution as musicians and songwriters. It garnered attention by Vice’s Noisey – “This album rules”; Rock’N’Reel (UK) – “This is a band that really understands and exudes the history of rock and roll”; Impose Magazine – “another stunner of a music collection”; New Releases Now – “one of the most dynamic live shows around”; AXS – “This album is sheer madness in the best way”; Ground Sounds – “gritty, groovy, and bluesy”; amongst others. Dec 21, 2018 welcomed the release of a new album, ‘Live in Missouri’, recorded at The Blue Note in Columbia, MO earlier in the year. This new recording closely captures the intense energy of The Hooten Hallers in concert, with a combination of improvisation, extended versions of songs, and many fan favorites.

Will Lawton And The Alchemists

Will Lawton and the Alchemists play “beautiful musical daydreams with forays into jazz with drum and bass”.  The music is formed around the piano-based songwriting and started out as a duo when Will Lawton (piano and vocals) and Weasel Howlett (drums) started to jam, record and perform in 2015 before releasing their debut album ‘Fossils of the Mind’ (2018) to critical acclaim.  The band is constantly growing and evolving with Buddy Fonzarelli (upright bass), Ami Kaelyn (guitar and vocals) and Harki Popli (tabla) all involved in the recording and live performance of the second, part-live album ‘Abbey House Session’ (2020). The music is notoriously hard to pigeon-hole so is best described by those that review them: “Melodic and inventive…..a truly breath-taking performance” Slap magazine  “There is something of the jazz approach at the core of this bands sound – interesting timings and intricate riffs hung on fluid, free-flowing musical structures – but their richly textured and layered music contains much more besides. Indie melodics, rock weight and progressive meanderings all add poise and power. They could be your best new find of the year…unless you have seen them already, in which case you have already made a note in the diary to be there.” Dancing About Architecture “The music is a gloriously unique and brilliantly exploratory” Greenman Publications “Refreshing, fascinating and exciting.  Perhaps this is what Tom O’Dell fronting Wilco would sound like if produced by Roni Size?  Regardless of how chaotic this sounds, it works. I mean it really works.” The Ocelot Magazine

Beth Rowley

We welcome back to Acapela the wonderful Beth Rowley. They say it’s good to take your time with things that are important to you, and certainly no one can accuse Beth Rowley of rushing the process of recording her much anticipated second album. Following a storming introduction in 2008, with her UK top 10 album Little Dreamer selling over 100,000 albums and receiving a Brit Award nomination for Best Female Solo Artst, Beth  spent 6 years experimenting and perfecting her sound  finally releasing her album titled GOTA FRÍA in 2018. Beth still acknowledges early influences from Gospel Spirituals, Soul and Blues inherited from her parents, who brought her up on Led Belly, Mahalia Jackson. Her new sound has grown edgier, deeper and louder with more than hints of 70’s electric guitar, gritty harmonica and Americana influenced pedal steel. Beth recently sold out a UK headline tour, including The Jazz Café and the Royal Albert Hall, in support of Jools Holland. Beth’s vocals are simply stunning, fragile yet powerful and need to be heard live to be fully appreciated. Whether she graces the stage either with her 4-piece band or a stripped back duo, it is clear to see that the years preparing have grown in her a confidence that only experience and commitment to your art can give. Beth has appeared on stage with some giants of the music world including recent tour support for Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra during his UK tour, Burt Bacharach – BBC Electric Proms alongside Adele & Jamie Cullum, David Arnold, and as Angelo Badalamenti’s personal guest with Susie Sioux (David Lynch’s right hand man) at Ghent film festival. Beth has performed at Willie Nelson’s 4th July Back Yard Festival in Austin alongside Ray Wylie Hubbard and has shared performances with Katie Melua, Carleen Anderson and the BBC Concert Orchestra. When Beth isn’t performing her own music she tours as guest vocalist with Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra. 2022 will see Beth touring again and releasing her new album.

An Evening Of Music: Classical, Crossover And Cabaret

Join us for an entertaining evening of varied music performed by fine musicians.  Ellen Williams will enthrall you with her singing of classical songs and her crossover repertoire and Wyn Davies will provide gentle amusement with his musical cabaret.  To begin the evening, there will be a touch of youthful class from the instrumental trio, Hiraeth. Welsh classical artist Ellen Williams has been praised for her “poise and promise, her voice agile with silvery charm” (The Guardian), and has been described as singing “with heart-piercing sweetness” (The Times).  Ellen has performed in many of the UK’s most prestigious concert halls including the Royal Albert Hall and the Wales Millennium Centre and has also sung for HRH The Prince of Wales in Buckingham Palace.  Equally comfortable singing classical or lighter repertoire, Ellen has performed opera and oratorio at many prestigious events and music festivals and has appeared frequently on many of Wales’ light-entertainment television programmes. Wyn Davies has conducted opera and concerts in all parts of the UK as well as abroad.  He has conducted in America (including 2 years at the Metropolitan Opera, New York), in many parts of Europe and more recently he has held the position of Director of Music, New Zealand Opera.  Although Wyn’s day job is to conduct opera, he also has a career in cabaret which began at The Ballroom, New York.  He has performed at the Royal Albert Hall and many festivals including Edinburgh, Buxton, Salisbury and Barcelona.  He has entertained company directors, country landowners, theatre clubs and birthday guests aged eight to eighty with his mix of the familiar and the peculiar.  Wyn’s one-man show JUST WYN, which he performed at the Theatre Museum, Covent Garden, led to television and radio appearances and two recorded volumes.  Listen to Wyn’s Sondheim medly: CLICK HERE The Hiraeth Trio is an exciting, young ensemble comprising flautist (Epsie Thompson), viola player (Hannah Roberts) and harpist ( Nia Evans), which was formed in London in 2017 while they were students at the Royal Academy of Music.  All former members of the National Youth Orchestra of Wales, they have performed at the Wales Millennium Centre and they gave recitals as part of the National Eisteddfod in Cardiff Bay in 2018.  The trio has also performed numerous recitals in London in venues including Charlton House and the Angela Burgess Recital Hall. The concert is in aid of the Friends of the National Youth Orchestra of Wales to help raise funds to support the young members of the orchestra in their 75th anniversary year.

Ian McNabb

Robert Ian McNabb was born in Liverpool on November 3rd 1960. An only child-the son of Patricia and Robert. He first picked up a guitar at the age of 12 after seeing Marc Bolan on Top Of The Pops. Ian joined his first band,Young World,at the age of 15; They played the working men’s club circuit for a couple of years before Ian joined another band City Lights. This band again gigged extensively around the North of England cabaret circuit, but Ian grew tired of playing other peoples songs and decided that cabaret was not the way forward for him. He had always written songs for fun but now he began to take it seriously. In 1981 Ian formed The Icicle Works with Chris Sharrock (drums), and Chris Layhe (bass and vocals). They quickly gained a following through their debut single release, Nirvana, and extensive live performances up and down the country. The Icicle Works became part of the Liverpool renaissance movement of the eighties, alongside acts such as Echo And The Bunnymen, The Teardrop Explodes, WAH!,Heat, OMD, Black, Dead Or Alive, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, The Lotus Eaters, and China Crisis. They signed to Beggar’s Banquet records, and under the guidance of Martin Mills scored a top 20 hit with Love Is A Wonderful Colour in the U.K ;and top 40 placings in the U.S, Canada, and Europe with Birds Fly (Whisper To A Scream), with their eponymous debut album. The Icicle Works achieved top 40 placings in the UK for all four of their albums – The Icicle Works, The Small Price Of A Bicycle, If You Want To Defeat Your Enemy Sing His Songs, and Blind-until they split up in 1988. Muff Winwood signed Ian to Epic records in 1989, paying a buy-out fee to Beggar’s Banquet; but Muff’s insistence on using The Icicle Works name, (with new musicians Roy Corkill and Zak Starkey) when the original band had ceased to be, caused friction and after one disappointingly received album, Permanent Damage, Ian was dropped from Epic’s roster. Ian began a collaboration with his friend and previous Icicle Works producer, Ian Broudie – a number of songs featured on subsequent Lightning Seeds records, which became hugely successful. Ian signed to Andrew Lauder’s new imprint, This Way Up, in 1992, which yielded 3 albums : Truth And Beauty (which Ian had recorded at his own expense by remortgaging his house), Head Like A Rock, which was recorded in part with Neil Young’s band Crazy Horse in L.A and subsequently nominated for a Mercury Music Prize in 1994 and Merseybeast -the latter 2 albums achieved top 30 placings; the first was heralded as “One of the best records released in Q magazine’s lifetime”. This Way Up records ceased to be in 1997 and Ian found himself without a deal once more, so accepted an invitation to join his friend Mike Scott (The Waterboys) on bass guitar for a lengthy European and Japanese tour. Ian self financed another record in 1998, A Party Political Broadcast On Behalf Of The Emotional Party, which featured Danny Thompson (John Martyn, Nick Drake amongst others) on upright bass. They toured together that Autumn to promote the record. At the end of the decade Ian released the live disc Live at Life, recorded over two nights at Liverpool’s Life Cafe. Ian then joined The Waterboys on keyboards for a European tour. When this was completed, Ian accepted Ian Broudie’s invitation to record on ‘The Barge’-Pete Townshend’s studio which Broudie was currently renting, moored next to Pete’s Eel Pie complex. The resulting album -Ian McNabb – saw a return of Ian’s love of guitar driven pop/rock and was released on Sanctuary Records in 2001. Ian briefly played bass guitar in Ringo Starr’s band in 2002. Throughout the 00s Ian released a further 5 solo albums :Waifs And Strays, The Gentleman Adventurer, Before All Of This, How We Live, and Great Things – all self financed and issued on his own Fairfield Records imprint to a small, dedicated fan base. All albums were supported by extensive touring. In 2009 Ian unleashed his autobiography Mersey beast which has become something of a cult classic amongst the rock fraternity (Peter Buck of R.E.M contacted Ian recently to tell him that he’d only just discovered the book and loved it!) -it has since been released as an audio book, narrated by Ian himself. So far this decade, Ian has released Little Episodes, Eclectic Warrior and Kruggerands – harder rocking albums which both feature the band Cold Shoulder; Respectfully Yours(a long promised album of cover versions), Star, Smile, Strong, which features collaborations with Prof. Brian Cox, a co-write with Ralph Molina (from Crazy Horse), and the unexpected return of Icicle Works drummer Chris Sharrock (who had gone on to work with The La’s, World Party, DelAmitri, Dave Stewart,Mick Jagger, Robbie Williams, Oasis, and both Liam and Noel Gallagher in their solo endeavours ), and most recently Our Future In Space, which once again features Cold Shoulder and the song Aquamarine co-written with R.E.Ms Peter Buck. Ian still lives in Liverpool, where is he a full time carer for his 85 year old mother. He tours whenever he can, and continues to write and listen to music constantly

We welcome Shakatak to Acapela to celebrate their 40th anniversary! With a career spanning more than three decades and a back catalogue packed with groove classics Shakatak have enjoyed a level of success and career longevity rarely achieved in contemporary music, in fact the year 2020 will be the 40th anniversary of the band. This paradox sees the band, who are known primarily as serious musicians, enjoying both high cult status and instant recognition as a household name. Their many hits include the singles Easier Said Than Done, Night Birds and Down on the Street. They have released more than 50 CDs plus three DVDs and their brand-new cd “In the Blue Zone” has recently been released. Glenn Tilbrook

Glenn Tilbrook has more than earned his place at pop’s top table as one of our most cherished singers, guitarists and songwriters, not to mention an in-demand and endlessly endearing live performer. More than forty years after he first answered an ad placed by Chris Difford looking for like-minded sorts to form the band that became the much-loved evergreen Squeeze, an ending is nowhere in sight. Such is the continuing work ethic of a fellow who’s never been far from the action since Squeeze made their recording bow with the Packet Of Three EP in 1977. Those humble three tracks led to such enduring pop classics as Take Me I’m Yours, Cool For Cats, Up The Junction, Another Nail In My Heart, Tempted, Labelled With Love, Black Coffee In Bed, Hourglass (this could go on for a while…), not to mention landmark albums like Argybargy, East Side Story and Some Fantastic Place. Squeeze’s demise in 1998 (though not permanent) saw Glenn embark on a solo career that spawned the albums The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook (2001) and Transatlantic Ping-Pong (2004), showcasing an ever-maturing songwriting talent. In 2009 came the fantastic energy of Pandemonium Ensues, an album made with his solo touring band The Fluffers. Arguably, though, Happy Ending is Glenn’s most personal work to date, a series of evocative portraits of time, people and places, that included writing and vocal contributions by his own children Leon and Wesley, in addition to old friends Simon Hanson (Fluffers/reunited Squeeze drummer) and Dennis Greaves (Nine Below Zero, also Glenn’s compatriot in the side project band The Co-operative). Anyone who has witnessed Glenn on the live stage can attest to the properness of his doings, as it were. Armed with ready wit, raucous vibes and a shed load of grin-inducing great songs, there are few musicians able to connect with their audience on such an immediate and warm level. The ever burgeoning festival circuit is frequently enriched by Tilbrook the troubadour, whether he be leafing through the plentiful back catalogue of Squeeze or dashing off impromptu audience requests ranging from Jimi Hendrix to Tony Orlando and Dawn, and all points in-between.

Consisting of Lee Pryor on vocals, acoustic guitar and harmonica, Nick Ferris on acoustic guitar and Geoff Hunt on acoustic bass and mandolin they began performing Led Zeppelin’s classic songs in a totally new format. In 2018 the remaining members of Whole Lotta Led joined Light Zeppelin to form Whole Lotta Led – Unplugged. Katy Hurt

Katy Hurt is one of those rare talents that can write and perform with equal impact. The singer-songwriter’s work ethic and authenticity are apparent in each song and are further evidenced by her rigorous touring schedule and accolades. In 2018 she opened for Liam Gallagher at the Pilton Party to a crowd 8,000 strong and 2019 saw Katy and her band perform in excess of 150 shows across two sold out UK headline tours, as well as international dates in Canada, the US and the Caribbean where she performed alongside Sonia Leigh on the Melissa Etheridge cruise and opened for the Bellamy Brothers at their first UK show in over a decade. Being an independent artist doesn’t seem to be slowing Katy down, with over 350k streams on her debut studio EP “Unfinished Business” on Spotify alone, she is truly building her fanbase from the ground up, winning hearts a show at a time. The self – released EP, which produced the Top 20 hit singles “Revved Up” and “Unfinished Business” was given a 5 star review by Maverick Magazine, where they noted “superb songs” with “raw talent seeping through each track”. Steeped in country roots, but never one to simply yield to the traditional Nashville sound, Katy stretches the country music genre in exciting new directions. She was chosen to perform at LA NAMM in January 2020, representing brands such as Tanglewood, Yamaha, G7th Capos and Kirlin Cables and flew from Winnipeg to LA and back to continue work on her debut album which is currently a highly anticipated release. Following her return to the UK, Katy kicked off what was scheduled to be her best touring year yet, on a high note, headlining at the UKCMSA Awards evening, hosted by Belles and Gals, and taking home awards for “Best Female Artist” and “Best UK EP/Album with Unfinished Business”. During the past year, whilst unable to tour due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Katy has entertained thousands, right from their living rooms, with her weekly livestream series on Saturday nights and has recently begun a second series on alternate Wednesday’s where she dives into the origins of the music that raised her. With all the uncertainty that faces live music, one thing that you can be sure of is that Katy’s debut album will be the light at the end of the tunnel, and the only place she will be going is up.

Geno Washington And The YoYos

Geno originates from Evansville in Indiana, USA and first came to England in the 1960’s as part of the US Air Force. His love of Blues and Soul music soon found him jamming with local bands in and around Ipswich and eventually led him to London where he caused a sensation singing with top R&B acts Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames and Zoot Money’s Big Roll Band at the legendary Flamingo Club in Soho. The rest, as they say, is history. Geno teamed up with some of London’s hottest musicians and Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band very quickly became established as the most exciting live band in Britain, regularly topping the bill over World famous artistes, as nobody in their right mind wanted to go on stage after a Geno show! His live shows were immortalised in two of the biggest selling albums of the 60’s – “Hand Clappin’ Foot Stompin’ Funky Butt Live” and “Hipsters Flipsters and Finger Poppin’ Daddies”. His status as the undisputed “King of Soul” was cemented forever by Kevin Rowland and Dexy’s Midnight Runners in the 1980’s with the World-wide No.1 smash hit single “Geno”, which paid homage to the great man himself and is still played regularly today on national radio and at Geno’s live gigs both before and after shows. Throughout the years Geno and his band have continued to tour extensively all over the World and have released several highly acclaimed albums and singles. His latest live double album simply entitled “It’s Geno Time”, recorded at the legendary Half Moon in Putney, is widely regarded as his best work to date: you only have to listen to the audience reaction to know that Geno has lost none of his magic as he and the band deliver a blistering set of Soul classics to a wild crowd who wouldn’t let them off stage! Geno’s life long love of Blues and R&B has led to yet another chapter in his illustrious career with the formation of “Geno and the Yo Yo’s” which features the longstanding rhythm section of the Ram Jam Band (Geoff Hemsley on drums, Steve Bingham on bass and Greg Lester on guitar) which is a hard- hitting, fast-moving show of R&B / Blues / Soul classics that has audiences on their feet from start to finish and is receiving rave reviews wherever they play. Whether it’s Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band or Geno Washington and the Yo Yo’s you can be sure of one thing and that is a barnstorming live show that never lets up in intensity or excitement and delivers the goods every time!

Ian Prowse & Amsterdam ‘The Plough Tour 2022’

Raised on the rallying cry of protest songs and influenced by the Celtic sounds that make Liverpool so unique, Ian Prowse is a singer/songwriter who is renowned for his incendiary live shows and has cemented his cult following over twenty five years with indie bands Pele and Amsterdam. Prowse charted with his song ‘Does This Train Stop on Merseyside?’, and Radio 1 DJ, John Peel, was reduced to tears live on air each time he played the track. Irish legend Christy Moore then adopted the song in 2009, making it the centrepiece of his number 1 album, ‘Listen’. Deeply impressed with Prowse’s 2019 album, Elvis Costello invited him to join every date of his national 2020 tour, ‘Just Trust’, as his special guest. Elvis is not alone in recognising Prowse’s ability to wow a live crowd as Prowse has previously rocked national tours with The Pogues, Damien Dempsey, Del Amitri and The Wonderstuff. Costello said of Prowse’s 2019 album, ˜Here I Lie” always come to an Ian Prowse record prepared to learn. Ian doesn’t just sing of the here and now but also reaches back into the past for a passionate tale to tell, to sing of an injustice that might tell us something about today. The truth is probably the best thing about Here I Lie. The album has racked up an impressive array of plaudits from other fellow songwriters, including Jean-Jacques Burnel and Baz Warne from The Stranglers, Miles Hunt and Damien Dempsey, who described it as a “sublime and majestic masterpiece [with] stunning imagery”. It has also amassed top reviews from the Daily Mirror, The Skinny, R2 and Louder Than War. Prowse’s ‘90s band Pele garnered hits abroad, most notably a number 1 in South Africa. It was with Pele that Prowse gained a reputation for his astonishing live performances and had multiple singles playlisted on Radio 1. Even though Prowse is known to sing many a heartbreak tune, conviction songs have remained his passion and, with his rousing performance of ‘My Name is Dessie Warren’, Prowse has helped to highlight the injustice of the late trade unionist. 2020 saw Prowse release a career-spanning retrospective, ‘The Story of Ian Prowse’ with brand new Soho-based label who signed him, Kitchen Disco Records. Christy Moore paid homage to Prowse on RTE: “Ian Prowse is a magnificent songwriter. We’re really glad we got to know him” whilst music business legend Bill Drummond opined that Prowse is a “one off”. Never stopping for breath, Prowse has continued to widen his cult following in 2020 both during the Costello tour and during lockdown; he has been commended recently on Radio 5 Live, on Talk Sport, by Janice Long and in national newspaper Metro for building a fresh and inclusive music community as he performs during his weekly, online, live shows. www.amsterdam-music.com “Urban folk is as good a label as any, though it would be foolish to get too reductive when talking about one of the UK’s most thrilling and underrated singer-songwriters.” – Record Collector By Arrangement with Selective Agency.

Featuring Big Yellow Taxi (her most covered song), River and A Case of You (both from the breakthrough album Blue), the radio hits of Help Me and Free Man In Paris (from double-platinum Court and Spark) and the jazz-infused stylings of In France They Kiss On Main St (The Hissing of Summer Lawns) and Coyote (Hejira). Matthew Frederick

“So good… So beautiful… So pretty” Huw Stephens, BBC Radio 1 “Matthew Frederick should now be recognised as one of Wales’ finest songwriters and performers” New Sound Wales Matthew Frederick fuses an early love of classic singer-songwriters with more recent influences to eate a distinctive and timeless blend of acoustic pop, indie folk, ballads and blues, plus a touch of Cymrucana and contemporary classical thrown in for good measure. With headline shows in the UK, Europe and US under his belt, as well as fronting BBC Introducing favourites Climbing Trees, the Rhondda Valley musician has released five albums, two EPs and sixteen singles to date across a number of projects since his 2012 debut solo EP Venus & Mars, with tracks being picked up by the likes of Netflix, Sky and ITV along the way. Alongside numerous festival (Green Man, The Hay Festival), television (BBC, S4C) and radio (BBC Radio 1, 6 Music) appearances, Frederick has also recorded at London’s iconic Maida Vale Studios, performed with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and was shortlisted for the Welsh Music Prize following the release of the Trees’ much-anticipated and critically-acclaimed Borders. Spawning five singles in total, Frederick’s debut solo studio album Fragments was released via Staylittle Music a fortnight into the UK’s first Lockdown, a record on which he plays each and every instrument. Country-tinged lead single Tell Me was playlisted by the BBC as well as gaining airplay from Amazing Radio, while the late-summer haze of Hay-on-Wye quickly became his moststreamed track on Spotify. The delicate nostalgia of piano-led Pink Blossom Snow was followed by an ambitious quest to find every Laura Jones across the globe, before latest offering and long-time live favourite Leave The Light On rounded off an unusual 2020 with a first solo spin on BBC Radio 1, courtesy of fellow Welshman and new music enthusiast Huw Stephens. An eventful 2021 witnessed the long-awaited return of the Trees with standalone single Troubling Times, before a spontaneous sixty-six day expedition saw Frederick become the first man from Penygraig to walk the coast of Wales, the seeds of a second solo album springing forth en-route… “Little slices of perfect pop (albeit tinged with a folk and country flavour), chock-full of hooks and melodies destined to take up residence in the subconscious … a hugely enjoyable collection of beautiful songs” RnR Magazine “As I sit back listening to Fragments, I am transported to another world …this is a real guitar-playing showcase” Fresh On The Net “It’s like the first rays of spring sunshine that’s endured a lot over the winter months” Adam Walton, BBC Radio Wales “Some incredible material in his armoury at the moment … it’s a quality, quality record” Charlie Ashcroft, Amazing Radio “A sheer delight … if music pushes buttons, then this certainly pushes mine. Quite superb!” FATEA Magazine “A cross between Dylan’s 1960’s storytelling and Springsteen’s 1970’s rabble rousers” Buzz Magazine “Fragments is one of the finest albums to come out of Wales in the last five years” From The Margins “A wonderful collection of songs … each moment feels free and effortless” Indie Band Guru “A thing of beauty that gets better and deeper with every listen” The Metaphorical Boat “One of the names to look out for” Metro “Delicate and beautiful” iSingMag “Listen, melt, repeat” Skip To This

It’s impossible not to get involved.” The Independent (Nozstock 2016 review) “Mr Tea and the Minions played one of the best performances we have ever seen! Expect great things from these guys.” Swingamajig Festival “Upbeat, playful and exciting” 365 Bristol Short Quote: “It’s impossible not to get involved.” The Independent

There have since been readings on 5 continents and it continues to grow. The company are privileged to present the World premiere of the updated and completed “One Night with Marilyn” Unknown to her many millions of fans in February 1961 Marilyn Monroe was sectioned by her psychiatrist Dr Marianne Kris to the Payne Whitney Clinic, the psychiatric division of Cornell University New York. Marilyn was under the impression she was being sent for some rest and recuperation by her trusted doctor. Marilyn was exhausted after the stressful filming schedule of ‘The Misfits’, its lukewarm reception and her fresh separation from Arthur Miller. In addition, Marilyn had set alarm bells ringing amongst her friends and psychiatrist by talking of ‘ending it all’. As she was being escorted into the clinic Marilyn became aware that this was no ordinary place and started to become quite anxious. She had often been to such places previously to visit her mother who had been confined to mental institutions for many years and was a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic. Marilyn herself had a growing complex that she too was going insane and friends noticed that occasionally she behaved as if pre-occupied by ‘voices’ she claimed to be speaking to her. Marilyn checked-in wearing a disguise and under the pseudonym ‘Faye Miller’. Upon arrival at her ‘room’ in the clinic a dishevelled unwell looking Marilyn was given a hospital gown, then left alone in her locked cell. To make matters worse the tranquilisers and prescribed medication she had been taking for some time to calm her nerves and any personal possessions had been removed. She feels lost and alone as withdrawal symptoms start to kick in – but was Marilyn Monroe ever really alone… www.onenightwithmarilyn.com

Dean Friedman

Dean Friedman first marked his entry into pop consciousness with the Top 20 chart success of his infectious hit single, Ariel, a quirkily irresistible and uncategorizable pop song about a free spirited, pot-smoking, vegetarian Jewish girl in a peasant blouse who lived, as the lyric goes, “…way on the other side of the Hudson”. THIS EVENT IS RESCHEDULED FROM 22ND APRIL 2020 and 27th July 2020 and 13th May 2021- all tickets and tables have been automatically transferred to the new date. Friedman scored again with the release of his follow up album, “Well, Well,” Said the Rocking Chair’, and the now classic hit single, Lucky Stars. This magical duet, performed with singer, Denise Marsa, zoomed to the top of the UK singles charts, going instantly gold. Lucky Stars paved the way for a slew of Friedman hits, including familiar radio staples such as Lydia, Rocking Chair, McDonald’s Girland Woman of Mine. Friedman’s consummate songwriting and performing, have earned him a loyal international following, devoted to the sophisticated, funny and profound work of a master songsmith. “Stunning Musicianship” – Hot Press, “Songsmith Extraordinaire!” – Music Week , “An Amazing Talent” – The Sun, “An American Classic” – Tribune, “The Soundtrack of Our Lives” – NY Times, are just of few of the superlatives used to describe Friedman’s powerfully unique and original talent. Friedman’s recent run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival garnered similar critical praise: “Every song in this Edinburgh show is a classic. You won’t see a better show.” – London Theatre Guide.  “Sophisticated and humorous work from an old master!” Scotland on Sunday. “With his mix of jaunty ditties, sentimental ballads and bashful charm, Friedman is the pop troubadour of choice.”  The Scotsman. “Dean Friedman is entirely unique and utterly brilliant” – ThreeWeeks. Though Friedman’s next single, McDonald’s Girl was officially banned by the BBC for mentioning the  tradename of the fast food restaurant, the irrepressible pop song has been successfully covered by a number of acclaimed contemporary bands including the Blenders (Universal) and top canadian band, Barenaked Ladies [WEA]. (BNL member, Steve Page, sings background vocals on Dean’s recent double album.) The song has become a viral YouTube video hit, and a staple of high-school and college a capella groups, around the world – including Harvard’s Din & Tonics and Yale’s Mixed Company – spawning more than 40 different video versions on YouTube; and now, three decades after being banned, the song has just been licensed by the McDonald’s corporation to be featured in a national TV/Radio campaign:“McDonald’s Girl”. Friedman composes and produces music soundtracks for TV and film, including five seasons of Central TV’s hit series BOON and the soundtrack to the underground cult horror film classic I Bought A Vampire Motorcycle [Hobo Films/U.K.]. Other credits include Nickelodeon, NBC, BBC and FUJI TV. Despite Friedman’s apparent absence from the popular music scene, evidence that his name and music have made a lasting impact on pop music can be found repeatedly in popular media: The British band Half Man Half Biscuit released a best selling EP containing the oddly titled, The Bastard Son of Dean Friedman. (Dean emphatically denies this claim.) Friedman extracts his revenge on his CD, Submarine Races with his song, A Baker’s Tale, the hitherto untold story of Nigel Blackwell’s dubious origins. With his influence evident in the music of contemporary bands like Barenaked Ladies, the Blenders and Ben Folds Five, Friedman states, ‘It’s nice to see my music has made an impact on a new generation of artists.’ Friedman  also produced and presented BBC Radio Scotland’s acclaimed radio series, ‘Real American Folk’, which has featured American Folk icons such as Christine Lavin, David Bromberg, John Prine and Steve Forbert. One of Friedman’s recent tours was almost cancelled when it was announced that his tour sponsor www.goldenseeds.co.uk would distribute packets of cannabis seeds to the first ten people that purchased CD’s at each of Friedman’s gigs. The controversy was only resolved after Friedman promised not to distribute the seeds within 50 yards of the venue premises. (click to see Songwriter’s Cannabis Controversy). [note: it is legal to possess cannabis seeds in the UK as long as they don’t get wet and germinate!] Friedman’s latest CD, ’12 Songs’, has been receiving rave reviews from fans and critics, alike. The long awaited, fan-funded, studio album contains 12 brand new original tracks, lyrical soundscapes and story-songs, bursting with life, love and survival in a surreal world. It contains instant classics like, ‘Your Pretty Face’, ‘Malala’, ‘I Could Fall For You’, ‘Then You’, ‘The Ducks of St Stephen’s Green ‘, and more. This stunning recording further confirms Friedman’s status as one of the finest songwriters of his generation. Friedman, 64, makes his home in Peekskill, NY where he lives with his wife, Alison, and Lola, the smallest dog in the world.

Fire & Rain & American Pie

A heartwarming, musical tribute to the great U.S. singer-songwriters of the late 60’s and early 70’s, featuring beautiful songs from James Taylor, Carole King, Simon & Garfunkel, Joni Mitchell, Don Mclean, Crosby, Stills & Nash, America, Carly Simon and more! Many of their timeless classic songs, from this special era, will be brought to life by a band of top musicians, along with an occasional intimate nostalgic narrative. The band is fronted by Paul Prem Nadama and Jessica Lee Morgan. Paul Prem Nadama is perhaps better known in the world of TV comedy as Paul Wheeler, Director of award-winning TV shows such as ‘Live at the Apollo’ and ‘Have I got News for You’. So with ‘Fire & Rain & American Pie‘ it could be said he is bringing ‘Have I got Tunes for you!’ to a live stage show where Paul pays homage to many of his teenage musical inspirations. Paul is an accomplished guitarist and singer-songwriter playing at intimate venues around UK and Europe. Recent appearances include the Edinburgh Fringe, Brighton Fringe and many festivals with many bands of various musical styles. His relaxed acoustic soul and contemporary folk style has often been compared to James Taylor and Paul Simon; combined with his finger-picking guitar techniques and soft voice which touches the hearts of many people on any size stage. Jessica Lee Morgan is a whole-hearted singer-songwriter who doesn’t beat about the bush. Jessica was raised on rock and folk by her parents, singer Mary Hopkin (‘Those Were The Days’) and record producer and musician Tony Visconti (Bowie, Bolan, Strawbs, Ralph McTell and more). She performs her own forthright songs with acoustic guitar and percussion strapped to her army boots. Jessica is a regular with her father’s Bowie supergroup Holy Holy and has recently supported The Blow Monkeys and Robyn Hitchcock. Christian Thomas currently plays bass with Jessica but has played in various bands for the last 25 years. He is a recording engineer and works regularly with Jessica and her mother, Mary, and with many others in the past. Tom Robinson – GLAD TO BE BACK TOUR

Although many of Tom Robinson’s 70s contemporaries such as The Jam, Elvis Costello and Ian Dury have spawned tribute bands, to the best of his knowledge no such act has ever attempted to cover his own back catalogue. Which of those songs, he wondered, would a Tom Robinson tribute band choose to assemble a full-on crowdpleasing set? There’d have to be the songs co-written with Elton John and Peter Gabriel. Also those unexpected comeback hits of the 1980s such as War Baby and Atmospherics. Not to mention the stone-cold punk-era classics that launched his career: Motorway, Power In The Darkness, Up Against The Wall, Too Good To be True and of course the anthemic Glad To Be Gay. In 2020 the veteran broadcaster and songwriter will mark 70 years on the planet by embarking on a month-long tour with his incendiary live band playing highlights from his own 45 year career in music. There may not have been a Tom Robinson tribute act until now – but as the chorus of his debut single puts it: “2-4-6-8… ain’t never too late

There may not have been a Tom Robinson tribute act until now – but as the chorus of his debut single puts it: “2-4-6-8… ain’t never too late.

Dervish

Legendary Irish folk music band Dervish, are one of Ireland’s best known traditional bands and are described by the BBC as “an icon of Irish music”. Dervish received a prestigious lifetime achievement award from the BBC in 2019, a fitting tribute to the band after over 30 years of recording and performing all over the world, playing at festivals from Rio to Glastonbury. Dervish have a line-up which includes some of Ireland’s finest traditional musicians, fronted by one of the country’s best-known singers, Cathy Jordan. Regarded by many as the most distinctive voice and finest front-woman in Irish traditional music today – the instrumental line-up of fiddle, flute, bouzouki, mandola, bodhran and accordion draw from seemingly limitless depths of talent, finesse, subtlety and fiery energy. Exceptional musicianship, breath-taking vocals, vibrant sets of tunes and instantly compelling songs all come together to make Dervish as complete a band as are to be found anywhere in the tradition. Dervish are regular visitors to the US, performing sell out shows from coast to coast. However, their fan base stretches across several continents, including Europe, Asia, and South America. They were the first Irish band to play the world’s biggest music festival, Rock in Rio, performing to an estimated 250,000 people. Over the years they’ve been on the same bill as artists such as James Brown, Neil Young, Sting and even Iron Maiden! All six members of Dervish are steeped in the musical traditions of counties Sligo and Leitrim in north-west Ireland. It’s an area which matches Atlantic coastline with storied mountains and rural landscapes. It has inspired a host of musicians, artists and writers, including the Nobel Prize-winning poet W. B. Yeats.

Fairport Convention – 2022 SPRING TOUR

Fairport Convention have been entertaining music lovers for over half a century, with 2022 being their 55th anniversary! During that time the band that launched British folk-rock has seen many changes, but one thing has remained the same – Fairport’s passion for performance. This year’s Spring Tour will present a mix of long-established Fairport favourites and some surprises from albums old and new including their latest album, Shuffle & Go, which was released just before ‘lockdown’ in 2020. Fairport Convention have won a BBC Lifetime Achievement Award and Radio 2 listeners voted their ground-breaking album Liege & Lief ‘The Most Influential Folk Album of All Time’. Their story has been celebrated with television documentaries on BBC Four and Sky Arts. The band features founding member Simon Nicol on guitar and vocals, Dave Pegg on bass guitar, Ric Sanders on violin, Chris Leslie on fiddle, mandolin and vocals, and Gerry Conway on drums and percussion. “Stuffing their set with a surprising amount of new material for a vintage act, Fairport are still clearly having fun and brought the house down.” The Guardian “Fairport is an institution, a festival, purveyors of memories, and keepers of the folk flame. But most of all they are a brilliant live band.” Folk & Tumble
