TOM's Film Club: Rafiki (12A)
Inspired by Ugandan author Monica Arac de Nyeko’s 2007 Caine Prize-winning short story Jambula Tree, Wanuri Kahiu’s acclaimed Rafiki (‘friend’ in Swahili) is a tender love story about the blossoming romance between two young women amid familial, societal and political pressures.
In Nairobi, Kena (Samantha Mugatsia) is helping her father campaign for a local election when she meets and befriends Ziki (Sheila Munyiva), the daughter of his rival. As their relationship depends, so too do the stakes, forcing them to choose between openness and secrecy, happiness and safety.
The first Kenyan film ever to be selected to screen in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, Rafiki was sadly only released in its native Kenya for just a week before being banned outright for positively portraying homosexuality, currently illegal in the country. TOM’s Film Club are proud to present this brae and groundbreaking work as the first of three brilliant films directed by contemporary innovative female filmmakers during September.
"This fresh and courageous coming-out drama from Wanuri Kahiu deserts to be seen, especially in its home nation where, as the film shows, homophobia is rife"
