TOM's Film Club: Kusama - Infinity

Before you experience Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Rooms at the Tate Modern, join WO50FF for the launch night of Women Over Fifty Film Festival 2020 with the immersive and illuminating Kusama – Infinity, a documentary 17 years in the making with a legendary artist over fifty as the focus, plus a couple of short films still to be confirmed for the night.

Exploring Yayoi Kusama’s fierce determination to become a world-renowned artist, the film documents her entire life-story, from her early years in a conservative family in rural Japan to how she found her way to America on the heels of WWII – without any connections and speaking only broken English, she devoted herself to her one true love, making art. From the 1960s onwards, her radical artistic vision rivalled those of contemporaries such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, with a legacy of artwork that spans the disciplines of painting, sculpture, installation art, performance art, poetry, and novels. After working as an artist for over six decades, people around the globe are experiencing her Infinity Mirrored Rooms in record numbers, which is a major focus of this film, and two such rooms will be on display at Tate Modern from 11th May 2020 – 9th May 2021, among some of her other prominent works.

An infinitely amazing, thoughtful, compassionate and deeply profound look at one of the most influential and unsung artists of the modern era. Director Heather Lenz captures the eccentric essence of this fascinating figure, while also making a bigger statement about overlooked female artists and artists of colour.

“In many ways, this is a story of a woman who had to fight her way to the top all over again, having battled depression, the complacent sexism and bland bigotry of the New York scene, and then finally the aghast conservatism of Japan [...] the film is a respectful and valuable tribute” - Peter Bradshaw, Guardian
