TOM's Film Club: First Love (15)

Blood, gore, severed heads, but with a tender love story at its heart - Takashi Miike is back with his 103rd film, First Love, which will be the launch night and preview for this year’s Scalarama Sussex, a month-long celebration of cinema every September across Brighton and beyond.

One night in Tokyo, Leo, a young boxer down on his luck and faced with a life-threatening illness, meets his ‘first love’ Yuri, who also goes by “Monica,” a sex worker and an addict, though still an innocent. Unwittingly caught up and embroiled in a drug-smuggling heist, Leo and Monica find themselves pursued through the night by a corrupt cop, a Yakuza, his nemesis, and a female assassin hired by the Chinese Triads, who are all baying for blood.

The latest film from the director of Ichi the Killer, Audition and 13 Assassins is a madcap chase thriller, with more than its fair share of violence, unadulterated mayhem, carnage and a wicked sense of humour, reminiscent of the great Tarantino films of the 90s.

“The Looney Tunes mayhem never unbalances the film. Miike somehow manages to find a poignant port of call on the other side of First Love’s giddy turbulence, delivering the perfect showcase for what this former enfant terrible does best. It’s so good, it might just inspire a deeper dive into the preceding 100-plus pictures” - Michael Leader, Guardian
