This months SPELLBOUND, at Komedia on SATURDAY 16th MARCH, celebrates the 40th anniversary of the legendary BLITZ club the heart of London's New Romantic scene with the help of someone who was actually there. Saxophonist, guitarist and percussionist STEVE NORMAN is a founder member of SPANDAU BALLET, iconic trailblazers of the New Romantic movement and, in their early days, effectively the Blitz's 'house band'.

(As long-term Spellbound-goers will remember, Steve Norman follows in the footsteps of Blitz host Steve Strange, who guested on the decks after Visage's final visit to Brighton, as well as fellow Blitz regular Kirk Brandon, and Martin Degville who performed live as Sigue Sigue Sputnik)

When he isn't working with Spandau Ballet, Steve Norman has been involved with an impressive variety of projects, notably Holy Holy, in which he recreated the early 70s works of David Bowie by collaborating with producer Tony Visconti, The Spiders From Mars' Woody Woodmansey and an array of special guests. He also frequently plays solo shows during Spandau downtime (visit http://www.stevenorman-official.com to see what he's currently up to).

As Spellbound's guest DJ, Steve intends to bring to life the mix of sounds one might have heard at a typical night at the Blitz: not just by Spandau's New Romantic peers but the precursors and inspirations behind the movement such as Bowie, Iggy and Kraftwerk. For the rest of the night, Spellbound's own SIMON PRICE & JAYNEY BLAMBLAM will play New Romantic and 80s synth classics.

We know you won't need any pressure on to DRESS UP! for the occasion. To cut a long story short, let's get Blitzed out of our minds...

When: (usually) on the THIRD SATURDAY OF THE MONTH

Spellbound, which happens on the third Saturday of (nearly) every month, is the 80s night for people who HATE 80s nights. Other 80s nights might give you the kitsch and the cheese, but we play the REAL good stuff from musics greatest-ever era (our core timespan is approx 1979-1985, with Tubeway Army on Top Of The Pops as our Year Zero and the Live Aid concert as our Doomsday, but we do spin the odd track from outside that range if its good enough), to a wonderfully mixed crowd of grown-ups who remember it all from first time around and young uns just discovering it 'as new'. And look out for the Eighties visuals to help with the Time Travel...

You want genres? Goth, Post-Punk, New Romantic, Alternative Rock, New Wave, Indie Rock, Synth Pop and Ska

You want names? Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Clash, The Cramps, The Human League, The Cure, Echo & The Bunnymen, Depeche Mode, New Order, The Sisters Of Mercy, The Smiths, Bauhaus, Talking Heads, Joy Division, The Specials, Public Image Ltd, Adam & The Ants, The Jesus And Mary Chain, The B-52's, Gary Numan, Psychedelic Furs, The Cult, Dead Kennedys, Killing Joke, The Jam, The Damned, Japan, New Model Army, Dead Or Alive, Fields Of The Nephilim, Teardrop Explodes, Violent Femmes, The Fall, The Birthday Party, Devo, Associates, Fuzzbox, Simple Minds, The Beat, Spear Of Destiny, Pixies, Alien Sex Fiend and loads more...

We sell 100 tickets in advance, but we do hold some back for walk-ups on the night. However, Spellbound is a very popular night and the venue is quite small, so it often fills up fast. We arent saying you wont get in if you get there late: we liaise closely with Komedia security to ensure that queuing is as quick as possible and that people arent locked out unnecessarily when theres room inside to accommodate them. But the best advice is still BUY A TICKET, and if you cant do that, ARRIVE EARLY!

Anyone whos an authentic first-generation 80s relic - or anyone whos met one and heard their frontline stories from the Goth Wars - will know that the definitive drink for alternative 80s types was SNAKEBITE & BLACK (that is, a pint glass containing half cider, half lager and a dash of blackcurrant to send it a lurid shade of purply-red). The lovely people at Komedia have agreed to sell pints of Snakebite & Black for the tempting price of just 3.50, exclusively for Spellbound!

If that wasnt already generous enough, every month youll have the chance to win a FREE SHOT! Listen out for The Underpants Song - in other words, Underpass by John Foxx - because every time the former Ultravox man shouts underpants! (thats what it sounds like, anyway) well throw a pair of Y-fronts into the crowd. If you catch one of the pants, you can exchange it at the bar for a shot of something strong!

There is a permanently-manned cloakroom at Spellbound to put your minds at rest when you want to ditch your belongings and dance, priced at 1 per item.

Well be back on Sat 20 Apr and (usually) the third Saturday of the month through 2019.

But for now

See you on the 16th!
