Pat Fish (Jazz Butcher)+ Short Stories, The Thunderbolt, Bristol

Along with Alan Moore and Rockingham Castle, Pat Fish remains a Northamptonshire institution. Boozer, intellectual and troubadour, Fish has released an entire canon of Jazz Butcher albums since the early eighties and has intermittently reformed the JBC to critical plaudits. Erik Morse, Spacemen 3 & the Birth of Spiritualized Pat Fish, the Jazz Butcher, is one of the most brilliant incisive pop writers that Britain has produced since the glory days of Ray Davies and Pete Townshend. Alan McGee, Creation Records Born in West London at a time that left him just too young to be a hippie and just a little too old to be a punk, Pat Fish grew up in an era where the Bonzo Dog Band appeared on childrens television, Syd Barrett was on Top of the Pops and the Adult World was represented in shows like The Avengers and The Prisoner. Disappointment was an inevitability. Fish failed to get the glam rock thing (probably too much of an excitable wee football fan) and found that the seventies drove him down some fairly obscure musical paths before punk rock came along to save the day. By then, however, all those mad little songs by Eno, Syd Barrett, Kevin Ayers, Daevid Allen, John Cale, Peter Blegvad and Tony Moore were already locked up in his head. Fish started making records under the name of the Jazz Butcher in 1983 and nobody has quite succeeded in putting a stop to this yet. He has recorded for Glass Records, Creation Records, ROIR of New York and Vinyl Japan of Tokyo. Overall he has written and released fifteen albums of original music, three live albums and innumerable singles and compilations. In 2016 Fire Records issued the album Last of the Gentleman Adventurers, originally released as a fan-funded project in 2012. In 2017 Fire will be undertaking a major re-issue programme, making several Jazz Butcher albums available once again on vinyl, CD and digital formats. With the Jazz Butcher, Fish has toured worldwide. As a solo artist, recent shows include Hamburg, Dortmund, New York City, Tokyo, Brussels and London, as well as his adopted home town of Northampton where he still regularly turns out with his acoustic guitar to support visiting artists. He likes collaborations, too. Apart from his lengthy association with Northampton-based digital hooligans Wilson over the years 2001-2009, Fish has recorded and appeared on stage with David J, Spacemen 3, Bristols The Blue Aeroplanes, German band M Walking On The Water, French indie art rock band Chelsea Paris and acclaimed Los Angeles shoegazers, The Black Watch. The thing about Pat Fish is that he is not tribal about music. Some people know him from his friendship with Spacemen 3, others for his fondness for Nikki Sudden and Dave Kusworth; some know him because he has worked with members of Bauhaus, others regard him as a classic independent songwriter in the vein of Pete Astor or Dan Treacy. Fishy just fetches his acoustic guitar and his notebook and heads for the railway station. His current inspirations: as always, the Velvet Underground, Alex Chilton, Peter Laughner, Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Kevin Ayers, John Martyn, Davy Graham and many, many more. Do you like your melodies sweet and your humour as black as pitch? Would you take a chance on something simple, intimate and direct from an artist who is on record as saying What I do is not entertainment but who regularly induces little bursts of outraged laughter from the audience? Do you want to see the real thing? You should maybe go and see Pat Fish. www.jazzbutcher.com www.facebook.com/pat.fish7 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PczUJb45iHk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irwapN_H6vg Plus support - The Short Stories Short Stories were formed in 2007 in Bristol, England by Tim Rippington and Stephen Miles. Tim and Stephen were at school together, a year apart but sharing the same musical values that made them firm friends. After school, the two went their separate ways Tim spent the next twenty years playing in various indie bands such as the Flatmates, the Five Year Plan and later the Beatnik Filmstars. He also ran his own recording studio for five years, and produced records for, amongst others, the now legendary indie label Sarah Records. In 2003 Tim formed a new band Forest Giants, who made four great LPs before folding in 2007. In the meantime, Steve became a school teacher, dabbling only briefly in music with a spell as drummer for Bristol indie band Modesty Blaise. In 2007 the two met for the first time in 20 years, and discovered that they still had much in common and The Short Stories were born. Since then several albums and singles have been released which can be heard here, https://theshortstories.bandcamp.com/

White Mink - TOM Swansong

After 5 amazing years and well over 20 sold out events (which still show no sign of slacking) we have decided to step back and shake things up a little. We will be retiring White Mink from her long-standing and hugely successful residency at The Old Market. While we plan to continue our festival appearances and look forward to creating one-off, pop-up events (both smaller and larger) in Brighton and beyond - this show will be our swansong at TOM. Invite your friends to this page now. We plan to go out with a bang and have an action-packed and suitably spectacular finale! This will sell out even quicker than usual. We also owe a huge debt of gratitude to our incredibly loyal audience and those who have supported us through every twist and turn over the years, so we\'ve lined up some of our very favourite Brighton acts from the last 5 years to help us say goodbye to The Old Market in fine style: Guests include: FLASHMOB JAZZ Undoubtedly one of the UK\'s finest swing bands - something like a British version of Postmodern Jukebox. Take a look at their version of GET LUCKY recorded LIVE at a Christmas WHITE MINK in Brighton... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-oJCNiiLCQ GOOD CO Hailing from Seattle, that\'s Seattle in the US of A, this band are the crme de la crme of the current North American electro swing scene, and they\'ve flown all the way here just for your pleasure. What a thoroughly lucky bunch you all are. Don\'t say we never spoil you! Here are some sumptuous beats complete with visual footage for your perusal... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Znx-0DB6PQA JOE BLACK One of the leading figures of the dark cabaret genres, this gin drinking cabaret darling, musical comedy misfit, drag clown and acid tongued ringmaster will be giving us a taste of his moody magnetism in the form of a few musical numbers. "The King of Cabaret Noir" Metro MISSY FATALE An International Burlesque Siren, and one of Londons most sought after cabaret stars, Missy has captivated audiences across the world with her hypnotic burlesque performances from the absinthe salons of Paris and baroque theatres of Milan, to the cirque-carnivals of Australia, and the Geisha district of Kyoto, Japan. She will be shaking those things in a freakishly furious fashion. Watch out for the wicked twist in this tantalisingly dark and erotic tease. TERMS OF UNNERVEMENT Specialising in the ridiculous, the hilarious and the unexpected. Terms of Unnervement create a world where nothing remains sacred. Infamous cabaret miscreant Joe Black joins forces with artist and model Arran Shurvinton to create a double act of a most unexpected nature. KITTY PEELS Quite simply Brighton\'s finest aerial performer. She will be delivering gorgeous and accomplished acrobatics on silks and hoops above your head. Kitty has been intricately entwined with our story from the very early days, so we couldn\'t do that swansong show without her. The \'Godfather of Electro Swing\' (The Telegraph) and creator of White Mink, NICK HOLLYWOOD will be both compere and DJ for the evening playing a \'best of\' soundtrack... https://www.mixcloud.com/FreshlySqueezedMusic/ And much much more to be announced shortly. We really hope all our old friends will join us to celebrate the last 5 years. Tickets are on sale now and, as we said, expected to sell out even faster than usual! The Wire Presents The Necks

Forming in Sydney Australia in 1986, over the last 30 years The Necks have built an international reputation as masters of their own musical language of long-form improvisation. Each night they step onto the stage with no pre-conceived ideas of what they will play they and the audience will go on a sonic journey that is created in the moment and in that room. Over their years together, they honed an assured process of building around repeated motifs through subtle shifts and layering, to produce an extraordinarily dense and hypnotic effect which builds in a mesmerising, epic fashion . a trio conjuring an orchestral expanse. In February 2017 they release their 19th album Unfold *, a special edition vinyl and digital-only on Stephen OMalleys Ideologic Organ via Editions Mego, and in January support Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds on their Australian tour, before returning to UK/Europe in May 2017. They have been touring Europe for over 20 years, with additional occasional special projects and collaborations with Brian Eno, Swans, Ilan Volkov, Evan Parker, Karl Hyde, Leo Abrahams, amongst others. Every Necks\' performance is a singular event, entirely improvised and working with the acoustics of the room.

22a Presents: Ruby Rushton Album Launch W/ Neue Grafik (live)

Our favourite south London jazzers Ruby Rushton return for the launch party of their second album, joined by a host of friends and family from their label, 22a. Having been the first live act to perform at our reopening in May last year, the RR boys (which include Tenderlonious and trumpeter Nick Walters) have always held a special place in our heart, and we couldn\'t be more excited to be showcasing their long awaited album. If their two previous performances on our stage are anything to go by, it\'s sure to be an electric night. Image courtesy of Sey Art.

Snarky Puppy

The last two years have brought dramatic changes for two-time Grammy-winning Snarky Puppy. After a decade of relentless touring and recording in all but complete obscurity, the Texas-bred/New York-based quasi-collective suddenly found itself held up by the press and public as one of the major figures in the jazz world. But as the category names for both of the bands Grammy awards would indicate (Best R&B Performance in 2014 and Best Contemporary Instrumental Album in 2016), Snarky Puppy isnt exactly a jazz band. Its not a fusion band, and its definitely not a jam band. As Nate Chinen in the New York Times stated, take them for what they are, rather than judge them for what theyre not. This 2017 UK tour will see Snarky Puppy perform their biggest shows in the country to date, with the band performing material from their new album Culcha Vulcha. Fresh off the heels of their 10th album, Family Dinner Volume Two, with this new record the band returned to its roots as an instrumental ensemble. Recorded in rural Texas with no cameras, no audience, and the opportunity to overdub, they have crafted an album much darker and moodier than any before it. The typical flash and bombastic moments that Snarky Puppy is known for have been replaced by a more patient, restrained, and sonically creative approach to both composition and performance. Radioland: Kraftwerk's Radio-Activity Performed Live

Perrier Jazz award-winning pianist & composer Matthew Bourne teams up with sound artist and composer franck vigroux and installation artist Antoine Schmitt to replay Kraftwerk\'s classic album Radio-Activity. At the Jazz Cafe the trio will re-imagine Kraftwerks 1975 masterpiece live using a formidable barrage of analogue equipment and live visual imagery. Using their background in jazz and improvisation to approach the source material in a way that will that will prove unmissable for Kraftwerk and jazz fans alike. I first heard the record when I was a kid in the 70s - it provided the jingle for a really famous radio show in France - the track Radio-Activity was a big hit. But only later did I realise that this album was more than that - its a great pop concept album about this idea of radio-aktivitt - not just the atomic power but the idea of communication. Tokyo Sound Land With Anchorsong, Daisuke Tanabe And Ametsub

Japan and more specifically Tokyo\'s beat scene has been bubbling very nicely over the past few years. Led by Tru Thoughts\' Anchorsong, the sound that has come to define the city\'s scene has revolved around melancholic, jazzy electronica with sweet and delicate melodies. Having supported the likes of Bonobo, Prefuse 73, DJ Krush, Daedelus, Gonjasufi and Jaga Jazzist, he\'s now established himself as a leading artist on his own terms. For a very special one off three way performance at Jazz Cafe he\'ll be joined by fellow producers Daisuke Tanabe and Ametsub in an extended back to back to back session sonically travelling through the tight bass and melodic scratches of Ametsub, the stop start d\'n\'b experimentalism of Daisuke and the bright, African inspired techno of Anchorsong.
