Robert Mitchell Trio Plays The Mary Lou Williams Songbook

For the 3rd and final show curated by Total Refreshment Centre for Jazz Caf\'s Milestones series, we have paired two musical giants, the great Robert Mitchell\'s new trio Epiphany 3 with the songbook of Mary Lou Williams. As well as performing a cherry picked selection of Mary Lou Williams tunes, Robert Mitchell will also do a whole set of his own compostions. Hes got a new album cooking so we will no doubt hear some of his new tunes! http://www.robertmitchellmusic.com/bio/ - Although for decades Mary Lou Williams was often called jazz\'s greatest female musician (and one has to admire what must have been a nonstop battle against sexism), she would have been considered a major artist no matter what her sex. To say that Mary Lou Williams had a long and productive career is an understatement. The point of departure for our songbook exploration starts with the album Zodiac signs from 1945 and ends with Zoning from 1974 , via the amazing Black Christ Of The Andes from 1964 . Curator for this show and Total Refreshment Centre resident Lexus Blondin will be spinning a vinyl only mix of the most soulful jazz tunes from his collection before and after the show.

Manu Delago Handmade + Support

Manu Delago Handmade + Support The Hope & Ruin, Brighton Wednesday 29th March 2017 Doors 8pm 8 +Booking Fee / 12 Standing or seated: Standing Over 18s only Amazing percussionist and Hang player Bjrk Intriguingly beautiful A mercurial sound indeed DJ Mag A man with a head full of ideas Songlines Celebrated percussionist, producer and composer Manu Delago returns to Brighton on 29th March at the Hope and Ruin to mark the release of his third solo album, \'Metromonk\' (Tru Thoughts). \'Metromonk\' finds this boundary-testing artist distilling and delicately exploring extremes of dynamics and mood; manipulating the Hang drum in experimental and inventive ways, the many voices and tones of this rare instrument are given top billing among a minimalistic palette of beats and acoustic sources. I wanted to create fresh, electronic soundscapes that are generated through live performance and therefore feel organic and human, Delago explains. Almost all of the effects on the Hang are applied live during one-take performances. It may initially sound like programming or production, but it\'s all happening there in the moment. This new music builds on an illustrious spell for Delago, whose ambitious 2015 LP \'Silver Kobalt\' won over tastemakers from BBC 6Musics Tom Ravenscroft and Don Letts to Radio 2s Alex Lester, Nitin Sawhney and Jamie Cullum (who snapped him up for a Maida Vale session), and was also loved by i-D, Clash, DJ Mag and more. Meanwhile, the Austrian prodigy maintained his busy schedule of engagements as a go-to musician for some of the world\'s leading artists. Recording and playing live with Bjrk, and drumming for The Cinematic Orchestra, he also co-wrote Anoushka Shankar\'s \'Land Of Gold\' LP and is a key band member on her world tour, rocking iconic concert halls, festivals and even Spains spectacular Alhambra Palace. The worlds leading Hang player, Manu Delago has had over five million YouTube views and featured heavily in BBC Radio 4s recent documentary on the instrument. While his last album saw him diversifying with multiple layers of synths, electronic production and a wide range of instruments, Metromonk restores his virtuosic Hang playing to centre stage. Captivating and compelling truly mesmerising i-D An incredible musician in everything he plays Nitin Sawhney A masterful and sensitive musician The Telegraph Ticketing outlets: TicketWeb UK http://www.ticketweb.co.uk/event/257895 SEE Tickets http://www.seetickets.com/event/manu-delago-handmade-special-guests/the-hope-ruin/1047449/ Resident Brighton https://www.resident-music.com/tickets Songkick https://www.songkick.com/store/events/28624774 Official website: www.manudelago.com Facebook: Manu Delago Twitter: @manudelago.com

Shabaka & The Ancestors

Shabaka Hutchings, the saxophonist behind Sons Of Kemet, The Comet is Coming and Melt Yourself Down (to name a few), presents his new project \'Shabaka & The Ancestors\', for their first ever London show. Their album \'The Wisdom of Elders\' recorded by Hutchings and The South African musicians was completed in one session and has been described by The Guardian as "pulsing, exploratory and vibrant". I see energy as being a form of wisdom to be passed down through the ages. Unpicking the title of his album for Brownswood, Shabaka Hutchings explains, When we study the music, the lives, the words of our master musicians we obtain a glimpse of that artists essential energy source. This is the core vitality of the individual which leads them to utilise the musical specifics of their chosen genre in a way that mirrors their inner source of power. This is an intuited wisdom thats handed to us from the legacies of our elders. Line-up: Shabaka Hutchings - tenor sax Mthunzi Mvubu - alto sax Siyabonga Mthembu - vocals Ariel Zomonsky - bass Tumi Mogorosi - drums Gontse Makhene - Percussions
