With its magical combination of jazz, folk and soul influences Astral Weeks is widely regarded as one of the most influential recordings of 20th century contemporary music. Malija                                    The Hen & Chicken, 210 North St, Bristol, BS3 1JF Sunday 22 October 2017 Doors 7.30, for 8.15pm start £14/£12 (OAP’s/students) Jazz Mark Lockheart (Saxes), Liam Noble (Piano), Jasper Høiby (Bass)   MALIJA is Mark Lockheart’s (Loose Tubes co-founder, Polar Bear) current small group with the amazing Liam Noble (Christine Tobin, Dave Liebman) on piano and Jasper Høiby (Phronesis) on bass. They formed the group as a result of an invitation to perform at the Rochester Jazz Festival 2014 in New York and from the very first rehearsal had so much fun and musical empathy. They had all worked together previously on Mark’s 2009 album ‘In Deep’ but this time they all decided to share the writing between them and explore a sound world without drums.    The pleasure of this trio in their close relationship is infectiously evident all over the set.” The Guardian (UK)   This sophisticated, genre-bending trio has been delighting audiences since its debut album release “The Day I Had Everything” on Edition Records.  Driven by a commitment to ‘in-the-moment improvisation’ and collective musical banter, the band’s idiomatic sweep through bluegrass, tango, abstract grooves and shimmering landscapes is delivered with flair and playful abandon. Three distinctive compositional voices, all hugely influential in the London scene, combine to form a unique sounding group   “….deliciously abstruse riches a-plenty, peppered with humour, melodic wit, irregular groove and a vivid descriptive quality.”  MOJO   Malija has just recorded its second CD entitled ‘Instinct” and will be playing UK dates in their autumn tour and again in early 2018. Top class Jazz from top musicians, early booking is advised??   http://www.marklockheart.co.uk/malija/

Irit Dekel

Blending jazz and Latin influences with the Ladino sounds of her heritage, the Israeli singer-songwriter performs music from her new album Hello. Driven by accordion, Latin guitar, trumpets and Irits effortless vocals, Hello is an album that sits comfortably between the likes of Astrid Gilberto, Buena Vista Social Club and Christine and The Queens. Instantly enticing, her music manages to be bright, colourful and brimming with pop hooks, yet with a great deal of depth to it that reveals her eclectic musical taste. Born in Haifa, Israels third largest city, Irit developed an eclectic taste from a young age, growing up on a diet of jazz, classical, radio pop and the amazing rhythms of Ladino (the rich tradition of Judaeo-Spanish music). Moving to Tel Aviv and later London with the intention of broadening her musical horizons, she set out on the journey that would result in her latest album, soaking up every experience and influence she could along the way. It was in London that she met producer Jonathan Quarmby, who fresh from producing Benjamin Clementines Mercury prize-winning debut album, worked with Dekel on crafting the tracks that would become Hello twelve jazz-influenced stories of growing up, relationships, magical places, affairs of the heart and everything in between.

Georgie Fame - In Concert

A major star of jazz and rhythm and blues for more than half a century his first big hit Yeh Yeh topped the charts in 1965 yet still sounds ahead of the game! Georgie Fame is the most soulful, sophisticated and swinging singer-instrumentalist the UK has ever produced, with his achievements recognised around the world at the very highest level of musical performance, by Count Basie, Van Morrison and host of others. He performs live only very rarely these days so we are incredibly proud to be able to present this special intimate trio date, with Georgie on voice and Hammond organ accompanied by his sons Tristram Powell on guitar and James Powell on drums. Theres no point in doing it when Georgie Fame could do it ten times better BILL WYMAN

Sun Ra Arkestra Directed By Marshall Allen In Bristol 29.10.17

Dictionary Pudding are THRILLED to present a rare excursion to the South West for the thrilling, inimitable, Sun Ra Arkestra - led by 93 year old Marshall Allen! Sun Ra was one of the greatest and least known jazz artists of the last four decades, whose influence on diverse musicians is little known to the general public. A pianist and band leader, his style ranged from retro swing to avant free, often in the same piece. His band could play a swinging Gershwin tune and almost imperceptibly soar into a free cosmic rhapsody as if they possessed a single mind. Ra was a keyboard improviser of great originality, but his foremost talent was for inspiring and teaching creative musicians to improvise freely but together. This tension between freedom and coherence was something he explored with abundant energy and skill. Sun Ra died in 1993. The Arkestra performs today, under the direction of 93 year old alto saxophonist Marshall Allen and their recent series of residencies at Caf Oto in Dalston have thrilled and inspired a new generation of listeners. For this special Transcender performance, Marshall Allen will direct an expanded Arkestra line-up - a rare opportunity to catch a genuinely unique and mesmerising ensemble of musicians, still playing under the guidance of the titular, currently absent, \'Ra!
