Whitney

DHP Present: Whitney A union between Smith Western\'s Max Kakacek and Unknown Mortal Orchestra\'s Julien Esrich, the pair join forces with four friends for a new sun-soaked project Whitney. Leaving behind the crushing guitars and mosh pits, they\'ve adopted a sound that sits in between country and folk, that takes on swirling chorus lines and add\'s sugar-sweet vocals. With a debut album readied for 2016, Whitney are a band you need to catch. Grab a ticket. https://www.thefader.com/2015/11/25/whitney-band-gen-f-interview

Darlingside (in The Lantern)

Sunday 2 July 2017 19.35 incl. booking fee The Lantern Doors - 19:30 Start - 20:00 With rich vocal harmonies at the centrepiece of Darlingsides songs, they may pay reference to folk giants such as Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Simon and Garfunkel and others of that ilk. Yet the myriad influences that feed into their sound from baroque pop, bluegrass, indie rock and cinematic orchestral textures together generate a winning musical identity that is built on much more than a simplistic rehashing of existing musical ideas. Already transcending typical genre stereotypes with just two albums under their belts, Darlingside are a truly original band on the cusp of renown. Locomotive folk-pop confections so richly executed its hard to tell if its one voice or 12 Rolling Stone. This is a seated show.

Sam Cutting // Ingrid Plum // The Sunset Perspective// 2pm-5pm

An afternoon of soothing drones and haunting, haunted folk songs. THE SUNSET PERSPECTIVE Hypnotic and ethereal songs, wandering round in an undergrowth of sonic drones and improv guitar. INGRID PLUM (https://ingridplum.bandcamp.com/album/plangent) \'Gorgeously atmospheric vocal techniques woven around field recordings & electronics\' - The Guardian Plum uses her voice with extended technique, improvisation, field recordings and electronics, to create layered soundscapes, spoken word and songs. Having performed and exhibited installation sound art and visual art since 2002, she creates work that sits between sound art, improvisation, multi-media installation, neo-classical and contemporary Nordic folk music. SAM CUTTING (https://samcutting.bandcamp.com/) \'the romanticism of Dylan and the eccentric fun of Jonathan Richman are somehow made one thing by Sam Cutting\' - Brighton Noise Songs of bitternes and irony, sung with a wry smile. A bit like I Am Kloot, a bit like Villagers. Sometimes brittle quiet, sometimes simmering anger, with infectious melodies. 3 - 2pm-5pm

Zervas & Pepper - Cardiff

Zervas and Pepper are songwriters Paul Zervas & Kathryn Pepper from the South Coast of Wales. Hailed by tastemakers for their Exquisitely harmonised, blissed-out Folk Rock MOJO. While locking themselves away from the world in a cabin in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, the duo wrote their forthcoming album, Wilderland. Returning to their acoustic roots to write, surrounded by the dense wilderness and solitude, a return to nature seeps into the songs. The sanctuary of their cabin muse only disturbed by thoughts of the outside world and the unfolding events that would soon also find their way into the fabric of the songs.

The Stray Birds + Support

Songwriting Magazine writes that The Stray Birds are "...flying high... with successful tours of the UK and Europe including appearances at the Cambridge Folk Festival and the Tonder Festival in Denmark... instrumental virtuosity and bluegrass-inspired three-part harmony... their new album \'Best Medicine\' has proved a surprise hit". That surprise hit was named International Folk Music Award\'s "Song of the Year"! So we are pleased to annouce that the only Stray Birds gig in Wales in 2017 is to be held at St Donat\'s Arts Centre. All originally from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, The Stray Birds started as a duo of acoustic buskers in early 2010 when Maya de Vitry and Oliver Craven met with their instruments, their voices, and their songs. It didn\'t take much convincing to get bassist Charlie Muench on board, and with the addition of a third unique and powerful voice, the group began to define its captivating sound. Seven years, three original records, and some six hundred performances later, the band is best known today for its song-writing, its tight and forthcoming vocal harmony blend and its commitment to an impassioned delivery of original material, both on stage and in the studio. They\'ve been seen from LA to London, sung songs from Dallas to Denmark, and played tunes from New York to New Orleans. In 2015, they emerged triumphant from Cambridge Folk Festival with footage included in the TV Highlights coverage of the event. Their 2016 Yep Roc Records release Magic Fire was produced by Grammy-winner Larry Campbell and earned much praise, including being voted as AmericanaUK\'s Best Album of 2016. They also carried off the Band of The Year title in the same Readers Poll. With time, their sound has evolved to a palate broader than what it first was on the street corners and in the markets, but this much remains true: The Stray Birds is a band of musicians as subtle and nuanced as they are energetic, a band of writers as blatant and bold as they are coy, and perhaps most importantly, a band of people as friendly and compassionate as they are talented. It\'s safe to imagine that most who hear their music come back for another listen, time and again.
