Kirk Fletcher Live At The Borderline

Chrome Note presents: Kirk Fletcher ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Widely considered one of the best blues guitarists in the world, Kirk Fletcher has commanded the respect and acclaim of critics, peers and fans across the globe. He is a four-time Blues Music Award nominee and has played with a variety of popular artists, including a four-year role as lead guitarist of The Fabulous Thunderbirds. He is also the frontman of his own band, having released three studio albums. A live album and a fourth studio album are currently in the works. Kirk first picked up a guitar at age eight, playing alongside his older brother Walter in their fathers church. It wasnt just a gospel influence that Walter shared with Kirk, but an appreciation of many musical styles from Jimi Hendrix to Steely Dan. One of the most important lessons Kirk received from his brother was about having great guitar tone, something Kirk is known for today. That early experience guided Kirk through high school as a member of the jazz band, and by graduation he was collaborating with friends and taking off on road trip tours around Southern California. Many of those friends have gone on to play with popular artists like Mariah Carey, All-4-One, TLC, and Snoop Dogg. However, pop music was not Kirks passion. One day he found himself in a small L.A. guitar shop, Music Works, which ultimately became his second home after meeting Jeff Rivera, Robben Fords guitar tech. We started hanging out and I would help load gear, change strings and just be a fly on the wall to some of the most amazing music Ive ever heard, Kirk remembers. The sound of Robbens guitar will ring in my head forever. This was a very important musical time for me because I had nothing to do but play guitar. It was in the next few years that Kirks full introduction to traditional blues occurred. He started seeking out other musicians who shared this same understanding enter Al Blake, lead singer and harp player for the Hollywood Fats Band. After hosting dinner every Sunday, Al would offer Kirk early 20th Century blues records as dessert. He also helped establish connections to other famous West Coast blues artists like Junior Watson and Richard Lynwood Slim Duran. So followed Kirks first gigs as a blues guitarist and eventually the recording of his first album Im Here and Im Gone for the JSP label out of England. Al Blake would also introduce Kirk to Kim Wilson of The Fabulous Thunderbirds, who invited him into his then-project, Kim Wilsons Blues Revue. Wilson brought Fletcher further into the blues family from California to Texas and then out touring the world. One highlight during this time was at Antones Night Club 25th Anniversary Week in Austin, Texas, which gave Kirk the opportunity to perform with his blues heroes Pinetop Perkins, James Cotton and Hubert Sumlin. Wilson also tapped Kirk to play on his Grammy-nominated Smokin Joint live album. Shortly thereafter a call to collaborate came from blues legend Charlie Musselwhite, confirming that Kirk was becoming one of the most in-demand blues guitarists on the scene. This is where I really developed my own sound and Charlie was cool with me being me, recalls Kirk. It also brought about his second solo recording titled Shades of Blue for Delta Groove Music. I found a happy place between the music I grew up on and the blues Id been playing up to that point. Timing couldnt have been better to explore these shades of blues as Kirk collaborated a whos who of blues players on the project, including singers Kim Wilson, Janiva Magness and Finis Tasby. Little did Kirk know that the timing would also line up for an open guitar slot with The Fabulous Thunderbirds around the same time. So began four years on the road with the Thunderbirds and time spent with many famous blues artists along the way, including a brief stint with the late Doyle Bramhall Sr. and a few guest appearances playing for Cindi Lauper and Michelle Branch. Kirk contributed to the Thunderbirds Paint It On album before embarking on another record of his own, a release entitled My Turn on the Delta Groove label. His boldest statement yet, it was also Kirks first vocal performance. It allowed him to grow and explore as a musician and songwriter steeped in tradition yet unafraid to break new ground. Since then Kirk has been singing and leading his own band between the occasional international tour as a member of blues super-group The Mannish Boys and as lead guitarist for Italian mega-star Eros Ramazzotti. He just finished a live album and is currently in the studio recording his next project.

My Baby

MY BABY goes back to Prehistoric Roots It hasnt taken long for Amsterdam based psychedelic, shamanic trio MY BABYs swampy blues and funk-inflected sound to cast a formidable spell, taking the world by storm. Over the past 3 years, Dutch brother-sister-duo Sheik (drums) and Cato van Dyck (vocals) and New Zealand guitarist Daniel daFreez Johnston have had their mojo working overtime and are now ready for the release of their third album Prehistoric Rhythm. With their new album, the band aim to channel a primal awareness amidst hypnotic beats, shimmering soulful vocals and psychedelic riffs on the back of rootsy blues and dubbed out funk. Daniel Johnston: "Over the past two or three decades, electronic dance music has become a huge part of our culture. Its hard to fathom just how many people connect and celebrate life by going to dance parties and raves. These gatherings are quite similar to tribal celebrations and rituals that have been around for thousands of years across all cultures in the world. The desire and need for those rituals remains and has become a fascination for us and we have made that trance-like hypnotic groove an essential part of our live performance, but it is also prevalent on a lot of the album. It\'s funny to think of it. Going back to prehistoric times, people dancing round a fire together! It\'s in our DNA." MY BABYs music has been influenced by the power of spiritual music (gospel and voodoo spirituals) and the entrancing hypnotic quality found in music accompanying shamanic rituals. The roots of these phenomena can be traced back thousands of years, so can the music. This \'tracing\' has become an important part of the \'personal\' vision of the band and is a central theme on the upcoming album \'Prehistoric Rhythm\'. The band has delved into some of those rituals, some of which exist to this day, and reflect on how a lot of contemporary culture has inherited from the past, that its cultural activity stems from these ancient traditions. First single Love Dance is an African inspired trance-like evocation of a tribal ritual involving the search for identity, love and spirituality. The protagonist is at peace after transcending the desire to feel complete through the presence and appeasement of others. Joost van Dijck: "We recorded this album primarily on a 4-track ampex deck from the fifties. We wanted it to sound old so you feel as though you experience something not linked to the present, but rather like traveling through different era\'s" With the release of their new album, MY BABY endeavours to take the audience on a shamanic influenced musical journey. And pose to develop a theatrical mythopoetic yet danceable form of music that can entice, uplift and engage the listener in a way that it allows us to discover something that resides within our collective consciousness just as the characters in the songs are forever searching for a heightened spiritual and primal awareness amongst the turmoil of our modern-day society. The gospel inspired tune, Make a Hundred", is a dub blues fable which follows an impetuous youth who has succumbed to a life of excess but soon feels that continuing such a disturbed path leaves her demoralized. She vows to change and bring her subversive nature to the fore by channelling her rebellion at the wrongs apparent in the world. She must learn to give a 100 % if she is to succeed. MY BABY isnt only evolving their sound and vision to a whole new level on the album, their live show has also been completely overhauled. The combination of light, visuals and music does so much more than just bring the album to life. "We try to ensure the audience\'s senses are captivated as we try to emulate something akin to a tribal celebration. It must tell a story where the audience becomes part of" - Cato van Dijck on the new live show In December 2013, they released their debut album Loves Voodoo! and started to spread their magical hypnotic voodoo blues beats in many countries building a loyal and growing following with their entrancing and compelling live show with gigs at Eurosonic/Noorderslag (NL), Zwarte Cross (NL) and tours in The UK and New Zealand in 2014. In the summer of 2015 they toured Europe to promote their second album Shamanaid. The album was played on BBC Radio and Belgium Radio 1. In strong demand at festivals such as Lowlands (NL), Into the Great Wide Open (NL), Sziget (HU) and playing at no less than seven alternative stages at Glastonbury 2015, they were chosen by Seasick Steve as the opening act on his April 2015 UK tour. 2016 brought only more success. MY BABY won an Edison Pop Award, a prestigious music award in The Netherlands, for their album Shamanaid, Played a headline tour in the UK, Germany, Denmark, New Zealand, South Africa, and The Netherlands. Their show in Paradiso, Amsterdam in December got sold-out within a month after ticket sales started. Also many shows on (main)stages at the bigger festivals in The Netherlands and Europe EXIT Festival (RS), Camp Bestival (UK), Secret Garden Party (UK), Down The Rabbit Hole (NL), Zwarte Cross (NL), Pohoda (SK), Gentse Feesten (BE), Colours of Ostrava (CZ)) took place that summer. After playing their first show in Switzerland (Gampel Open Air), Swiss National Broadcasting Organisation SRF named MY BABY the biggest highlight of the festival and the album entered the Swiss charts immediately after the festival.

All Them Witches At The Bristol Bierkeller

ALL THEM WITCHES Sat 7th Oct Bristol Bierkeller 10adv ***ON SALE FRIDAY 24th FEB*** www.AllThemWitches.org ALL THEM WITCHES RETURN WITH SLEEPING THROUGH THE WAR FEBRUARY 24th, 2017 NOISEY PREMIERES 3-5-7 VIDEO TODAY They are the real deal - psychedelic blues-rock warriors who pray at the altar of Black Sabbath, space out like Pink Floyd and shred away their bummers like Blue Cheer. SPIN The Nashville-based psych-rock quartet All Them Witches are set to return with Sleeping Through The War via New West Records on February 24th, 2017. The 8-song, 46 minute set was produced by the Grammy Awarding winning producer Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell) and follows the bands acclaimed Dying Surfer Meets His Maker released last year. The fundamental laws that govern Sleeping Through The War are the same that have made All Them Witches a cult favorite - big fuzz, deep grooves, cosmic vision -- but years of jamming their way across the country and three European tours in 2016 alone have made their songcraft more dynamic, more responsive, and years of psychic interactions between band members has lead them into a headier sonic space. Their recent performance at the Voodoo Music Festival was met with rave reviews with Stereogum calling them a highlight of the weekend and SPIN stating They are the read deal - psychedelic blues-rock warriors who pray at the altar of Black Sabbath, space out like Pink Floyd and shred away their bummers like Blue Cheer. Noisey premiered the new video for the single 3-5-7 today which can be seen HERE. Conan OBriens Team Coco previously premiered the video for the albums first single, Bruce Lee, which can be seen HERE as well. Sleeping Through The War will be available digitally, on compact disc, and LP and is now available for pre-order via Pledge Music. The bands sound on Sleeping Through The War has become so expansive, you can hear echoes of Dr. Johns Gris-Gris, the glacial expanses of Sigur Ros, the stoner sludge of Kyuss, and the meditative om of the East. We wrote it in about six days, says guitarist Ben McLeod. Where in the past we would have just gone ahead and written and recorded in the studio, we were like nah were going to do it with Dave, lets be prepared. It was real minimal, Dave didnt want us to get too crazy. He added, We wanted a record you could crank. And we wanted girl backup singers. It might seem like an odd detail -- the appearance of the Nashville songstress Caitlin Rose, Erin Rae, and Tristen on backing vocals add a classic rock flourish, at odds with their own work, but it makes sense within the context of the songs and within the context of their career. All Them Witches are at their Ummagumma moment, their Bare Trees, their Tres Hombres. Singer/bassist Charles Michael Parks offered, Were trying to get to something better -- not necessarily just as musicians -- but as people. Ive always said that as we change as people, our music changes, thats why we can never make the same records. I cant be in one of those bands. I hope youll never hear another predictable album from All Them Witches. Theres no art in that. NewWestRecords.com

Jo Harman Live At The Borderline

THE LONDON FOLK & ROOTS FESTIVAL PRESENTS JO HARMAN ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jo Harman is an award winning vocalist who has performed at some of Europe\'s most prestigious venues, including performing for, and with, the likes of Patti Smith and Joan Baez in Berlin. The Daily Mirror called her \'the finest female soul blues vocalist in the UK\' and Huey Morgan said on his Radio 2 programme \'sometimes you hear a voice that leaves you speechless...I am\'. She is widely recognised as one of the finest vocalists and writers to emerge in Europe over recent years, and has the CV, and industry admirers, to back it up. Some brief career highlights to date include:- - her DIY debut album, released in 2013, being picked up V2 Records (Adele, Mumfords) etc in the Low Countries where it made the national album charts (alongside mainstream TV and Radio appearances for Jo) - she has played around 100 festivals in recent years - many as headliner - across a number of countries, simply by dint of \'word of mouth\' reputation, culminating in 4 consecutive appearances at \'BluesFest\' - resulting in her \'Jo Harman Live at The Royal Albert Hall recorded by the BBC\' live album. Jo was also one of only 12 (otherwise household name) artists to play ParkPop in the Hague to 300,000 people. - Jo was one of a handful of (otherwise household named) artists asked to appear at Amnesty\'s \'Ambassador of Conscience\' Awards in Berlin where she performed for, and with, Joan Baez (and Patti Smith). - Jo has just recorded a much anticipated second studio album in Nashville, working with producer Fred Mollin (Carole King, Barbra Streisand, Billy Joel, BB King etc) which is scheduled to be released early in 2017. Live, her soul fuelled show ranges from hard rock to intimate, heart-warming ballads and features both her own emotive songwriting, but also personal takes on well-known standards and songs that mean a lot to her.

NightBus Presents: The Greasy Slicks // Port Erin

The Greasy Slicks The Greasy Slicks are a grungy, psychedelia-laced blues rock three-piece made up of Jack Kendrew on guitar and vocals, drummer and singer Rian OGrady, and Nathan Rasdall on bass. Off the back of the bands recent debut album release and European/UK headline tours including festival appearances, you can expect to hear new material accompanied by more live dates in 2017. In the age of the throwaway band, The Greasy Slicks truly bring something different to the table. PORT ERIN Port Erin\'s musicality is magnetic with tightly wound dives and grooves. Cerys and Jacobs rhythm section is a solid unit, Reuben drifts in-at times controlled and soulful but with moments of cornered fretting. A milieu of sonic textures are at play with echoes of jazz, coupled with mechanical Krautrock undertones. They are as punk as they are prog and as political as they are personal. After party with The Conductor until 4am!
