Venue review: Face 11

Situated on Cathays Terrace, Face 11 offers cocktails and fine food in a cosy room of fairy lights and snug seats. With a bandstand in the corner and a larger room out the back for gatherings, it has the potential to go from peaceful to party in a matter of minutes. Sporting good prices and a chilled atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to meet friends after a hard day of work!

While it’s set on the edge of Cathays, which anyone who lives in Cardiff knows is student central, a wide age group visit for drinks, and if your stomach starts rumbling the food is on point. Offering a plethora of stone-baked pizzas and premium quality burgers, the portions are more than enough and everything tastes divine. They pride themselves on using the freshest and most local ingredients: the meat in particular is bought from farms in the Cardiff area. While they focus on using deluxe ingredients, by looking at the price you wouldn’t guess that they would. Everything is more than affordable and roughly the same price as you’d find in any usual chain, even though the meal itself is superior to that of a commercial restaurant. In a move of courteousness all of their dough is gluten free to accommodate a larger amount of people, so they do ask to phone and book at least an hour before if you’re thinking of indulging in one of their famed pizzas.

Although the ambience of the venue is to relax, events are a regular occurrence here. Regularly hosting open mic nights, live music and comedy, it’s a hub of entertainment that more often that not will have you in fits of laughter or up on your feet doing a little jig. And what better way to experience your entertainment than with one of their wide range of flavoursome cocktails, all 2 for 1 of course! They’ve curated their own range of ‘Big Screen Inspired’ concoctions (I’d recommend ‘Slimmer’s Ectoplasm’, based on Ghostbusters), and if you’ve been burdened with driving everyone home you don’t have to miss out on the fun: they have a selection of non-alcoholic creations to satisfy your thirst.

I haven’t seen many regulars in here it must be said, but this is because it’s a venue you visit to celebrate with friends, whether it’s a birthday, a Christmas duo, or simply after works drinks once Friday’s over! Dress is therefore smart-casual: make an effort to wear a shirt, and not to rock up in jeans and your favourite Breaking Bad t-shirt. They have a cocktail to cover that, aptly named ‘The Heisenberg’.

Their motto is “One of the nicest things about life is we must regularly stop whatever it is we’re doing and devote our attention entirely to eating and drinking”. If you agree with that, then you’ll fit right in at Face 11.
