Men involved in kidnap case jailed for 26 years
Three men have been jailed at Bristol Crown Court for a total of 26 years for charges which included robbery and kidnap.
The men were arrested on January 9 following a hostage situation at a property in Fishponds where police secured the safe recovery of a female hostage.
Ren Chen (26) and Hai Feng Li (23) were each sentenced to eight years imprisonment for one count of kidnapping and 10 years for a second count of kidnapping, to run concurrently. Hai Feng Li was also given a four year concurrent sentence for robbery.
The third defendant, Qun Xue (22), was sentenced to six years for one count of false imprisonment.
The offences related to a set-up where work opportunities were advertised in the Bristol area on a social network internet site, and applicants were encouraged to come to Bristol by train. On arrival the individuals were kidnapped and efforts were made to extort money from relatives in China.
Detective Inspector Simon Wilstead, who led the investigation, said: "Offences of this kind are thankfully rare occurrences in the Avon and Somerset area.
"We have experienced staff specially trained in appropriate tactics designed to help secure the safe release of the hostage in a situation like this.
"These custodial sentences demonstrate our continued commitment to bringing offenders of serious and organised crime to justice in a speedy and professional manner."
