With just over one week until the start of Love Supreme Festival 2016, AfterDark takes a look at where you might have first seen some of their stars before - some of whom in the unlikeliest of places.
Recognised by most as an icon as much as an artists, dipping her toes in many waters including supermodelling, songwriting and record producing to name just three. Grace signed to Island Records in 1977, where she released a number of top 40 tracks including 'Private Life', 'Slave To The Rhythm' and 'I'm Not Perfect. However, my first introduction to Grace Jones was not as a singer but as an actress, playing the feisty Bond villain May Day in the 1985 film A View To A Kill. More recently, her work includes 'Original Beast', a track for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I and a memoir titled ironically 'I'll Never Write My Memoirs', which was released in September 2015.
If at aged 88 I am still able to perform music and headline a festival, I will consider myself to be doing very well indeed! Legendary crooner and balladeer Burt Bacherach has won Grammys, Academy Awards and enjoyed a fruitful partnership with lyricist Hal David. Many will know his best for his song 'Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head', famously used during the bicycle scene in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, however, my first introduction to him as a performer was through the Austin Powers films. See his introduction by Austin Powers from the second of the movies, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me below.
Before Kelis' milkshake was bringing all the boys to the yard, Kelis was already making waves on the music scene winning both a BRIT Award for Best International Breakthrough Act and an NME Award for Best R&B/Soul Act in 2001. Then came the milkshake. But what next? Well whilst between albums, Kelis trained as a saucier, graduating from Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in 2010. She has since released her own cookbook, range of sauces, TV series on the Cooking Channel and set up her own food truck to serve attendees at the SXSW Festival. One thing is clear: Kelis clearly has food on her mind, so if you see her queueing up for a food stand at Love Supreme, it's probably the best around!
London-based singer-songwriter Lianne La Havas started her professional musical career as a backing singer for Paloma Faith - not a bad way to begin! She signed to Warner Bros. Records in 2010, where she was given 2 years to hone her craft before releasing to the public, which proved to be time well spent, as her debut album Is Your Love Big Enough? received a Mercury Prize nomination and won iTunes Album of the Year in 2012. Her music has gone from strength to strength, with a number of high profile collaborations including co-writing with Paul Epworth (best known for working with Adele) and featuring on Rudimental's 2015 album We the Generation. In the build up to Love Supreme, Lianne has been supporting a little-known band called Coldplay, whilst playing arenas in Latin America, UK and Europe. She is sure to be on top form for the festival this year so you can expect big things from this one!
