In December 1992 Paul Alexander , Johnny Stallard and Jason Lumber got together with Steve & Adrian Ashby and Steve Phillips all original 70's club DJ's together for a one off re-union, the rest they say is history : we haven't stopped since .
Launching Soultrain 70’s was a milestone and landmark that has resulted in Bristol's favourite Soul Institution and probably the longest running club night in the country. Let's face it how many clubnights have been running for 23 years and are still goin strong ? with roots and origins tracing back to the early 70's . In 2001 and 2004 Soultrain brought US funksters the Fatback Band to Bristol for the first time in 25 years, playing all their hits live at Soultrain. Hits like I found Loving,Wicky Wacky, Bus Stop, Backstroking and Spanish Hustle. This night lives long in the memory. We are still in direct contact with the Fatback band leader Bill Curtis, with whom we have become very friendly and once acted as tour managers to the band.
In the summer of 2004 Soultrain were invited to host the Dance Tent at the Glastonbury festival. In front of 10,000 funksters Soultrain held it down with the Fatback Band, Sister Sledge, Gwen Dickey (ex Rose Royce) and Jazzy B's Soul to Soul. Soultrain regularly hosts stages at Glastonbury where we have appeared 4 times and are on the 2015 line up in addition along with George Clinton /Parliament /Funkadelic to The Love Saves The Day Festival as well as Soultrain DJ’s appearing at London’s famous Ronny Scotts
Soultrain have worked with/ hosted Alexander O'Neal, Shalamar , Roy Ayers, Omar , Loose Ends , Light of the World , Nile Rodgers , Womack & Womack , Mica Paris , Beverley Knight , Shaggy , Heatwave , Cymande , Average White Band , Edwin Starr, Gil Scot Heron, Martine Girault and Pee Wee Ellis . There are exciting plans for 2015 to work with more major Soul Artiste Keith Sweat /Blackstreet / Karen White / SOS Band
Having been involved in pirate radio with Kute FM winning a license as Eagle Radio then to be taken over by Star Radio Soultrain hosted a 5 Hour show every Sunday evening on Star Radio before moving to BCFM . In 2013 Soultrain decided to set up our own internet based radio station playing 100% soul 24/7 to become Bristol’s only dedicated soul radio station at www.soultrainradio.co.uk which is headed up by Al B and Ricky 2 Tuff .
From early beginnings of Soultrain 70’s at Chasers , Soultrain has stopped off at The Parkside ,McCluskys , Panache , Evolution then in 2011 Motion became the new home of Soultrain . Consequently Soultrain were awarded by The Soul Survivor Magazine The Top Soul Night outside of London past & present and runners up in 2014 . Also voted by The Guardian as the Top Club night out Soultrain is now at at Projeckt on Baldwin Street as we hurtle towards our 25 year anniversary . Over the decades Soultrain 70’s dropped the 70’s tagged and now run as Soultrain extending across 5 decades 70's to 00’s but it the love of the 70’s that Soultrain is best renown for .
Paul Alexander like rare groove and jazz funk. Retaining all of his original record collection from the 70's he has been an avid collector ever since, as well as catching US touring artiste when in the UK .Paul has seen Freddie Jackson, Luther Vandross, Lonnie Liston, Roy Ayers, the Blackbyrds, Roy Ayers, Al Green, Maceo Parker, Manu Dibango, Herbie Hancock, Cameo and Maze as well as many of the original Tamla Motown acts.
