Ibibio Sound Machine Added To The Downs Bristol Line-up

Ibibio Sound Machine has been announced as the latest band to be playing the main stage at The Downs Festival 2017 on Saturday 2nd September.  Having returned to the UK charts with a new album Uyai, which means ‘Beauty,’ earlier this year the band is a Bristol favourite. Fans have had to wait three years since the band’s self-titled debut album which stunned the music world with its innovative mix of Nigerian melodies and language with modern technology.

Punctuated with the theme of strength and liberty of women, Uyai represents a triumphant return for the band, whose live set is sure to be a special part of The Downs Bristol. “The group’s uplifting energy and brilliant instrumentalists are probably best experienced live,” said the Guardian.

Fronted by London-born Nigerian singer Eno Williams, Ibibio Sound Machine’s unique style is inspired by the golden era of West African funk, disco, modern post-punk and electro. The band has also recently performed at Glastonbury, BBC 6 Music Festival, Later...with Jools Holland and as part of Lauren Lavern’s Wonder Women series in The Globe Theatre in London.

British rock titans Elbow are headlining the main stage at The Downs Bristol, which is returning to the city’s much-loved green oasis for the second year in a row. Elbow are joined by American blues legend and festival favourite Seasick Steve, hip-hop icons De La Soul and legendary 80’s R&B group Soul II Soul. DJ, producer and rapper Mike Skinner, the former frontman of The Streets, is playing the festival’s second stage along with Groove Armada, David Rodigan MBE and Bristol’s own Roni Size.

This year ‘The Information’ stage will also return, featuring keynote speakers poet, rapper and historian Akala, Bafta-winning satirists Heydon Prowse and Jolyon Rubinstein and spoken word artist Vanessa Kisuule, to name just a few.

The Downs Bristol is presented by Team Love and Crosstown Concerts.
