This Tuesday, The White Rabbit in Brighton sees the first Folklore Session of 2017. As ever, held on the third Tuesday of each month, Folklore Sessions are hosted by creator and local singer-songwriter Jacko Hooper and features some of the best local and visiting talent found in Brighton to play stripped back sets in an intimate, performer-friendly environment. Each month, 3 artists join Jacko to showcase their latest music to an attentive audience of musicians and music lovers, rather than rowdy locals and people talking loudly at the bar, which can sadly be found at many acoustic nights. This month's line-up features James Edge & The Mindstep, Spec and Sebastian Schub. Entry is free, so there is no excuse not to come along for a lovely evening of top quality live and local music. Find out more about the night in the FACEBOOK EVENT.
Here's what Folklore has to say about the artists performing this month:
This year has seen the praise surrounding Edge get more fervent. ‘Where We’re Going To’ has been played by Alex Lester on Radio 2 and Tom Robinson on 6Music, while ‘Becoming’, the flipside on that AA single release, was premiered and made song of the day on Folk Radio UK. The ‘On A Red Horse’ EP also received glowing reviews from R2 and Fresh On The Net amongst others. Any praise Edge gets is well given. He is a modern day Zappa, channeling his eccentric art through folk arrangements to create something deeply surprising, raw, and unnerving.
It's been a year since we've had this talented songwriter at our headquarters and we're delighted to welcome him back. Combining a powerful and emotive presence with dark and introspective lyricism, Spec takes you on a journey all his own but one you will feel firmly a part of. A gentleman on and off the stage and one to not be missed.
We first came across Sebastian a couple of months ago when he was seen busking in Brighton... Immediately we were taken by his voice and the strength of his songwriting. An incredibly soulful and gifted musician we are delighted to welcome him into Folklore and to share his music with you all. The maturity of songwriters such as Damien Rice, Ray LaMontagne and Glen Hansard all shine through... The only way is up for this young artist.
Following the release of his latest EP, After The Storm, at the end of 2016, Jacko has been receiving a lot of good press, including having his track 'Closer' featured as track of the day on BBC Surrey & Sussex, where he will be recording a live session tonight (Sat 14th January). Folklore Sessions is Jacko's brainchild and he's done well to keep the standards top notch from its first night back in 2014 and has kept the nights consistently packed out for the performers. Jacko's engaging performances usually include new songs as well as old favourites, and perhaps a cheeky cover thrown in too. Whatever he plays though, Jacko has a way of captivating his audiences, something which you need to see to really understand, so why not pop down for free this Tuesday and check out Folklore Sessions!
