The Duke Spirit

The Duke Spirit are an English alternative, post-punk band. The original line-up formed in 2003 in London and included Luke Ford (guitar), Liela Moss (vocals), Toby Butler (bass), Olly ‘the kid’ Betts (drums) and Dan Higgins (guitar).

Dan Higgins created woodcuts which were used for the bands’ debut album, EP and singles, these included Cuts Across the Land, Dark is Light Enough, Roll Spirit Roll, Lion RIP, Love is an Unfamiliar Name. Unfortunately, Higgins left the band after their second album to concentrate on his family and therefor the artwork wasn’t continued.

They received critical acclaim from NME for their debut album Cuts Across The Land and gained cult status with a word-of-mouth advertising campaign. They did little TV and radio appearances relying more on their fans spreading the word. Neptune followed which again gained more praise and critical acclaim. This album saw The Duke Spirit perfecting their riff heavy, drum laden tracks with Leilas iconic vocals & howls. Songs such as The Step & The Walk, Send A Little Love Token and Lassoo. During this time Moss was also a guest vocalist on UNCLE’s track Mayday for their 2007 War Stories album.

Their latest EP Kusama was a pre-release to their third album Bruiser and was named after the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. Kusama became an influential factor in the writing of their third album Bruiser. The band then took a two year break to concentrate on side projects and explore other ventures. Moss and Butler wrote and released new, more electric music under the name of Roman Remains and Brett ventured into producing and drumming with London based band Furs.

As The Duke Spirit have toured with bands such as The Vines, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Eagles of Death Metal, Queens of the Stone Age, Janes Addiction and many others.

Moss has been recognized as a fashion icon for her unique and striking attire and in early 2009 Alexander McQueen crowned her his muse. One of her signature pieces is a swan feather necklace which was recreated by Tatty Devine. They released a 10-track compilation CD which featured Souvenir, Masca and Do What You Love, these were previously unreleased. The compilation also featured a cover of Alex Chiltons’ Baby Doll and was sold alongside McQueens fashion collection. The collection featured a t-shirt with Liela Moss’s face.
