Maddie Jones is a young singer-songwriter and guitarist from South Wales. On the 10th of November 2014, she releases her debut album, Vita Brevis.
Vita Brevis was recorded in Cardiff in collaboration with esteemed producer Charlie Francis (previous credits include REM, Future of the Left and Sweet Baboo). Maddie's arrangements of her self-penned material feature her playing several instruments on the album (including guitars, synths, ukelele and clarinet) accompanied by a cast of friends and fellow musicians from Cardiff.
Maddie has been mentored by acclaimed singer-songwriter Amy Wadge, who has co-written with Ed Sheeran and Lewis Watson amongst many others.
Amy Wadge said: “Maddie’s unique voice and songwriting ability makes her a force to be reckoned with. She’s also a brilliant live performer and deserves a massive future”.
Well known for her dynamic and captivating performances, Maddie won Cardiff’s Big Gig Competition in June 2013 and, in the same year, played at Sŵn Festival, Glastonbury and Brecon Jazz. Her previous gigs have included legendary venues such asRonnie Scott’s, Bristol's Colston Hall and Cardiff’s Clwb Ifor Bach, and she has supported Stephen Fretwell, Jake Morley, and Caroline Harrison amongst others.
David Owens, Music Editor for Media Wales and one of the judges at Cardiff’s Big Gig competition says: “When Maddie scooped the Big Gig 2013 Award we were all absolutely blown away by her music. She is evidently influenced by an array of artistes and demonstrates considerable knowledge of music which manifests itself in her fantastic songs. On stage she is a considerable, enigmatic presence and her stagecraft and interaction with a crowd is assuredly confident and way beyond her years”.
Maddie has absorbed influences from the 70s bands of her parents' record collections to the world, jazz and classical music she studied at Nottingham University. As a result, she takes an experimental and eclectic approach to writing - both lyrically and musically, drawing from her emotional responses to life’s spectrum – from temptation and love to fear and loss.
Maddie says: "I always had music in my veins, enhanced by creative family and friends; I surrounded myself with it, and made my world a frenzy of songs and adventures. The new album has been the most exciting experiment so far - working with new brains like Charlie and Amy, but combined with the talents of my trusty musical friends".
Previously Maddie has written, co-produced and self-released two EPs. Her debut 6-track EP Let It Out in 2010 and her second, Mr Walrus in 2013.
