Headed by multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter (and son of quantum physicist Hugh Everett III) Mark Oliver Everett, perhaps better known as E, EELS first made waves with their debut album ‘Beautiful Freak’. Filled with melancholy songs with tormented lyrics like ‘Novocaine for the Soul’, ‘Susan’s House’ and ‘Your Lucky Day in Hell’, the album brought them acclaim and a fanbase across the globe.

Since forming in 1995 in California, EELS have straddled a variety of genres over their 11 album output. ‘The Cautionary Tales of Mark Oliver Everett’ contrasts with the high-octane rock and roll of their previous work. Inspired by Everett’s loss of love and subsequent regret, it couples a bare-bones lyrical intimacy with a live orchestra that lends a stunning backdrop to the brutal insights of the lyrics.
