Pioneers of the self-coined Cymrucana scene, South Wales four-piece Climbing Trees feature Matthew Frederick (piano/guitar/vocals), Colenso Jones (guitar/bass/vocals), Martin Webb (guitar/bass/vocals) and James Bennetts (drums/vocals).
Formed in the Summer of 2011, the band soon came to the attention of BBC Radio Wales as work on their first release progressed, gaining BBC Introducing Band of the Week, Artist of the Week and Single of the Week recognition along with playlisting throughout the station in 2013.
Soon after, The Trees released critically-acclaimed debut album Hebron, recorded in isolation at Mwnci Studios in Carmarthenshire between May 2012 and February 2013. The culmination of over two years of writing, gigging, recording and beard-growing, the album was celebrated with a special launch event at Cardiff's Clwb Ifor Bach at the end of August 2013, leading to support slots with touring artists as diverse as Jamie Cullum and Spin Doctors, along with fellow Welsh contemporaries Paper Aeroplanes and Al Lewis.
Recently announced as one of twelve artists chosen as part of BBC Cymru Wales’ Horizons project, 2014 has seen appearances at the likes of Green Man Festival, Festival No.6 and The Hay Festival during a jam-packed Summer Festival Tour which also included a triumphant performance at Laugharne Castle as part of the Dylan Thomas Centenary celebrations.
Along with a session at the legendary BBC Maida Vale studios, this Autumn will see the band begin work on the eagerly-anticipated follow-up to Hebron, with 2015 set to be another big year for Climbing Trees.
